Good video, I was asking myself recently how the 2 would compare and then I saw this video and was happy to have my question answered. 1 suggestion. When measuring near field on a ported subwoofer you need to also measure the port and add the 2 measurements together to get an accurate response. As you measured further away the mic began to pick up the combined response. Jeff Bagby and a couple of others have written some good white papers and done videos on the subject.
@JilesMcCoy
@JilesMcCoy 5 лет назад
Thanks Erik, I will check those out. I did a number of measurements at the cone, the port, between the two, etc. My conclusion is that since I wasn't trying to create a scientific quality measurement keeping measurements similar and simple would give good enough data. Much better than anecdotal in any event. Next up will be working on some simple processes people can use to integrate multiple subwoofers. Hopefully I can derive a similarly simple process that yields "good enough" results yet still addresses time delay, phase, reflections, nulls, multiple seating locations, etc.

Yes you will get less output from the driver in areas of the ported as the driver "stops moving" and the port gives more output. I pointed this out in a video of miking bass guitar and guitar cabs.
@johnmathenge5271
@johnmathenge5271 2 года назад
There are some serious flaws in this video. First, all sealed subs benefit A LOT in room further away from the cone (room gain). Near field measurements only give you a profile you see on WinISD. Second, this sealed sub has not been EQd like commercial sealed subs are (remember how you EQd the Harbottle sub? That's exactly what you should have done here). It is impossible for a ported sub to outperform a sealed in the teens (around 17Hz and below) if they are similar drivers driven by same amp and the ported tuned at 20Hz (like this one).
@Clint3571
@Clint3571 4 года назад
Could you run REW with the mic at your actual listening position? I think you would notice an even bigger difference in the ported around 20hz. I am also wondering if you are pushing both subs to their theoretical xmax. I would like to see a test with EQ on the sealed and as much power as it can handle. I have a 12 cubic foot box tuned to 18hz with a Dayton 15 in it right now and I am trying to decide if I want to go with a pair of sealed 15s instead, but I know that power and EQ comes into play. Thanks for taking the time to make an informative video.
@JilesMcCoy
@JilesMcCoy 4 года назад
Hi Clint. I think you are right about even more output being measurable at the MLP. Since the video I have pulled the driver from the sealed box and build a 2nd ported enclosure. I plan to do a video showing their performance in my listening environment. It wont be directly applicable to other folks rooms but it is suggestive of what it might be link. I also plan to buy a sealed 15" kit from PE and make a video about that. I could do a 1 v 1 in my environment to see the output difference between it and the ported 18. I didn't attempt to find maximum output for the subs. They play into the mid 120s as a pair and Ive not tried to go higher than that. For me... the is way plenty!!!

Joey Del Mars Jr. I wouldn’t worry so much about maximum SPL. I would look at SPL at frequency. Where is your F3? ( The frequency when your sPl is down 3db. A great goal is to have your f3 fall at 20hz or lower. If you don’t have that you might want to look at changes. That is a fairly aggressive goal for anyone but hard core folks though.

@Quetzalcoatl0
@Quetzalcoatl0 4 года назад
@@JilesMcCoy I would love to, but no space for such a big volume =/ But i can fit 4 to 5 sealed cubes almost everywhere. The design i was looking for for ported was a 500L box with a 15hz tune and a 4th order highpass at ~13hz. Not planning to push more than 600watts into one. For the sealed i was looking for a 180L box running 100w on the sub but with heave EQ, 5db + at 20hz and 5db+ at 15hz, so boost those lows. This way i can have a sealed flat response down to 14ish HZ and a really slow slope. Because of the low unboosted wattage i don't even need any fitlers. The only problem is that i can play subs almost everywhere but i can't move them around for the sweet spot. So it will have to be EQ-ed even more. Room is also huge so i have no idea how much room gain i will get. I might build one of each and test as much as i can before i throw more money. Would really love more tests of both in different positions thou :)

Great video! However... To measure the more sub and less AV gear, I think subs should simply be fed a sine wave sweep of 50 to 20 hz from a tone generator at the subs max output before damage with both frequency and SPL displayed real-time. Otherwise what are we really going to discover? Could we get pretty much the same results from the Ultimax at 20 - 30% as from a good 12 inch sub driven at 90%? Yes we could. Material over 50 hz is not the job of a subwoofer. Sub measurements are not the same at 20% output vs 90%, the levels at different frequencies change, some more than others. If the test room dimensions are given, we can figure the +/- results relative to our own room. To demonstrate the full capability of the Ultimax 18, the minimum amplifier to properly drive a single sub is either the Crown XLS 2002, XTi 2002 or QSC RMX 1450a. A pair of the QSC's WILL trip your breaker at the upper threshold if the room is only on a 15 amp circuit, the Crowns get the job done with less draw. The DSP on the XTi series is well worth the $$ for sub duty, you can smooth out ugly room peaks in minutes. The Ultimax will tap out before these amps clip or exhibit any distortion. Using Behringer amps, plate amps or mid-fi consumer grade gear like Emotiva on the Ultimax is like trying to see what a new Corvette can do without exceeding 2,000 rpm on icy roads. This sub demands current, none of the plate amps or boutique gear can match these pro amps. You bought and built the subs, don't you want to see what they can really do? Not just in terms of sheer blurred vision SPLs but much lower distortion as well. Don't try to water ski using an electric trolling motor.

@@glennnichols4220 Great question. Answer: You can have get four Ultimax 18-22 sub kits with Crown amps for roughly the price of just one of the least expensive JTR 18 inch subs. Databass has the Ultimax 18-22 beating the Rythmik F18 by several db @ 20, 25 and 31hz. Of course JTR has subs doing even better. A pair of 18-22 kits / Crown XLS 2502 cost the same as one F18. I'm thinking of downsizing from my Full Marty and I was considering dual sealed Ultimax 18s. But plugging my ports on the Full Marty (making it sealed) I noticed HEAVY distortion below 20Hz on less than 300w. 15Hz for example at 300w (around 35v-40v out of the Inuke) 2nd order harmonics is as loud as the fundamental 15Hz tone. (That's 30Hz) As well as terrible 3rd and higher harmonics. Have you noticed this problem out of your Ultimax 18 Sealed? Have you run the sub hard around 15Hz and noticed heavy distortion? I really need to downsize so it'll be easier to go dual in my room. But I want it to at least play cleanly and I fear the Ultimax subs distort too easily below their sealed roll off point. Which is confusing when people claim really good 10Hz numbers. Maybe they don't measure distortion and they just post up a graph without knowing any better? Sorry for the long comment/ rant. I might just go with Dual 2x UM10s per enclosure tuned to 18Hz in a 5 cubic foot enclosure. But dual Sealed Ultimax 18s would be great if the distortion wasn't a possible problem around my target 17Hz+ range. Would make for a quick and easy project. Kinda quick...Other ther than waiting for Ultimax subs to come back in stock it'll be quick and easy

i'm a new sub, this is a really good video! from watching your other videos i think it was mentioned that your longest wall in your theater room is about 17 feet - that should put your room gain starting at ~33 hz and a 12 dB boost at ~16.5 hz. it's great that you can actually see that begin to occur in your sealed sub measurements at cone vs at 1m. it's also very useful for viewers so they can see effects of room gain in a room conducive to it and similarly understand how there will be very little room gain when you have an open floor plan due to the reinforcement point being much lower in the frequency spectrum. my room gain begins at 15 hz! dang open floorplan!

Btw, thanks for the video. Good informative stuff and interesting to see a measurement. Please take my comments below as they are: constructive feedback and not criticism. :) I gave you a like.

RU-vid should automatically process and add those resolutions so that you can choose.

Thats cool. Rooms are crazy things. Be careful to not blow out your sub under its tuning frequency.

so throw away all the graphs, what did your ears tell you? I think people over analyze this stuff way too much.

Do you have a recommendation for using two UM18-22's inside a van?

I don't. I would check on some car audio forums.

It not made for cars. Building speakers for cars is much different.
@SpecialEDy
@SpecialEDy 4 года назад
@@sniper8567 I don't think that's accurate. It is made for cars and home theatre, based upon the fact that Parts Express lists build specs for both on this driver. Home audio and car audio are only different in the electricity powering the system, and the fact that a car is a much less ideal environment for speaker layout and sound reflections.

@@JilesMcCoy Unfortunately, car audio people are incredibly ignorant compared to home audiophiles. "Let's just throw more power and bigger drivers at the issue".
