Yes, that Dingo Fence is real. It stretches for 5,614 km or 3,488 miles to keep dingoes out of the relatively fertile southeast part of the continent where the majority of Australians live (like Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, etc) and protect the sheep flocks of southern Queensland. It used to be over 8,000 km long, but because they didn't want the extinction of the dingo and wild-dog cross-breeds, poisoning them with compound 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) baits was preferable and cheaper than fence maintenance. A compromise in the form of the continued use of poison and the shortening of the fence from its previous length of over 8000 km has been made. They've also built rabbit-proof fences! Rabbit-proof fences were introduced into Western Australia to deal with the problem of over-population of rabbits destroying crops and degrading pastureland. Rabbits were first introduced into Australia by the First Fleet when they arrived in Botany Bay in 1788. There are three rabbit-proof fences in Western Australia! When completed, the rabbit-proof fence (including all three fences) stretched 2,023 miles (3,256 km). When it was completed in 1950, the 1,139-mile (1,833 km) No. 1 Fence was the longest unbroken fence in the world Here's some volcano facts: The sounds of the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883 were estimated to be 310 dB SPL! It was heard 3,110 kilometers (1,930 mi) away in Perth, Australia, and Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 kilometers (3,000 mi) away! The eruption was a 6 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, but there have been eruptions more powerful than that! In 946 CE, Mount Paektu on the China-DPRK border was a 7 on the VEI! The eruption, whose tephra has been found in the southern part of Hokkaidō, Japan, and as far away as Greenland, destroyed much of the volcano's summit, leaving a caldera that today is filled by Heaven Lake! An average of about 5 cm of Plinian ashfall and Coignimbrite ashfall covered about 580,000 sq. miles all the way to Japan! An emperor was so alarmed by the devastation that he set all his convicts free. The mountain has been considered sacred by Koreans throughout history. Many kingdoms of Korea such as Buyeo, Goguryeo, Balhae, Goryeo, and Joseon worshipped the mountain!

In the 2018, 2020, and 2021 referendums, the Loyalty Islands actually voted for independence from France! And an interesting thing about Hawaii is despite being in the tropics, they still get blizzards at its highest elevations! Snow in Hawaii is often associated with a Kona low, which occurs when winds that typically blow out of the northeast shift and begin to blow from the southwest, over the leeward or “Kona” side of the islands. Here are some other interesting facts: Besides Karl Bushby walking across, someone actually SWAM between Little and Big Diomede in 1987, Boston-born Lynne Cox, for 2 hours and 6 minutes as a sign of goodwill between the US and the USSR! She twice held the record for the fastest crossing of the English Channel in 1972 and 1973! Alaska has a land area of 571,951 square miles or over 1,481,300 square km, and a total area of 665,384 square miles, or over 1,723,300 square km! It has more total area than the next three largest states of Texas, California and Montana COMBINED! And the US bought all that land from the Russians in 1867 for 7.2 million US Dollars (which was equivalent to $157 million in 2023). And the Russians almost sold it to LIECHTENSTEIN, who said no because they thought it was useless! As for the Alaskan state flag, thirty-two years before Alaska became a state, the Alaska Department of the American Legion sponsored a territorial contest for children from seventh grade to twelfth grade to design a flag for the then territory. In 1927, the contest committee chose Benny Benson's design, a fourteen-year-old orphan. Benny was a Qawalangin (Fox Islander) Unangan born to a Swedish-American father and Aleut-Russian mother. Choosing the familiar constellation he looked for every night before going to sleep at the orphanage, he submitted his flag and symbolism. Benson's design was chosen over roughly 700 other submissions. He used the $1,000 prize from the flag design competition to enroll in the Hemphill Diesel Engineering School for Diesel engine repair. The blue field is for not just the Alaska sky but also the forget-me-not, the official flower of Alaska!

Technically, Japan _was_ once colonized by a European nation. Not by the general interpretation of 'colonizing', but the Dutch used to have their own established bases of operations, also known as _factories_ , I believe in Kyushu. These factories, though without any form of influence of power (except by trade relations) in Japan, are basically the exact same thing as the 'colony' presence in Sri Lanka by the Dutch (though there with influence of power). So by some meanings of colonizing, setting up a 'colony' was done by the Dutch in Japan.
@effexon
@effexon Месяц назад
aint that pretty common colonizing method... who cares of remote jungle and forests, main ports are the thing. Those who hold money and trade, often hold influence. chinese 1800s trade by gunpoint sounds same, although japanese only accepted dutch and blocked others. everyone tried though at the time.

Re: time zones, I miss living in Indiana before they succumbed. Been feeling extra groggy twice a year for no good reason since ‘06 woohoo. And, If I had to guess the wine differences in pairing came partly from the fact that by the time new world wines were a thing water was generally more safe/available to drink. Before that your well to do would want to drink wine with meals to especially show off their “fancy” (instead of the watered down ales/beers or whatever of the lower class) and some things certainly can taste weird together. Well seeing this was posted brightened my night but I tried semi-successfully to sleep earlier so this was watched in the morning. 😴 Lots of fun and little things to notice. Glad to see more “second channel” videos and hope there’s something more to come about the first part of that trip. 👀

@mrewan6221
@mrewan6221 Месяц назад
Yes, Australia is not part of the New World, but it's also not Old World (despite how long indigenous people have been around)! The term "New World" came from the European "discoveries" of the Americas. (Despite people already living there and doing quite well for themselves.) The "Third World" was the European "discoveries" and "exploration" of the rest of the world, mainly Africa and Asia. (Again, despite the people living there quite successfully). Australia was "discovered" by Europeans in this "Third World" phase. Australia was a Third World country. Economists and politicans later changed the definitions to describe poor countries (i.e. exploited by Europe) as "Third World", and promoted the affluent countries (e.g. Australia, New Zealand) to be "Western" countries, even though it's hard to get much further East than New Zealand. The economically acceptable parts of Asia stopped being Third World, and are in some sort of limbo waiting for a label. Maybe "Far East" isn't the value judgement it once was. Now "New World" is a mostly forgotten term except in a Dvořák symphony. "Old World" is mostly used in biology, and includes Europe, Africa, and Asia. Only "Third World" is still used, but not to show European discovery, but as a denigrating term for Africa and less affluent parts of Asia.

Old world wines almost exclusively refer to European wines, and more specifically "traditional" wine styles and regions. "new world" is more just a way of saying "new school of thought" even for wines that come from Europe. In general it is a mostly eurocentric term that is almost entirely about philosophy and style and nothing to do with geography.

Don't be hemispherist! Antartica gets very long days in Summer, which is about December to March in the Southern Hemipshere (depending on your county's definition of seasons). Daylight saving is more effective further away from the Equator. That's because the daylight lasts much longer in Summer, away from the Equator. The Southern Hemisphere can have daylight saving, and some countries do. The southern states of Australia and New Zealand do it. The reason that there are not huge numbers of Southern Hemisphere countries with DLS is that there are nowhere near as many countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

6:48 Simplistic. Ethiopia-always having had a Christian king-was historically treated by Europeans as UNCOLONIZABLE. 🇪🇹 Just because she was temporarily occupied by Italy during World War II doesn't mean that she was an Italian colony. By that childish definition, Japan and South Korea were also colonies following the war since they were both under an American military government for 10 years. 🇯🇵🇰🇷 And for all intents and purposes, Afghanistan 🇦🇫 and Thailand 🇹🇭 were under European control. They only got left nominally independent because, in the case of the former, England and Russia needed a buffer state separating India from Central Asia, and in the case of the latter, England and France needed a buffer state separating the Subcontinent from Indochina.

That's "varietal" not "variety" on the wine. The varietal is the type of grape used. In Europe there are much older traditions and over the years wines have been perfected down to things like the soil and climate of a specific region, whereas the average American wine has undergone centuries less optimization so its just the grape type that is emphasized. Also, it's the seasons that swap places in the Southern Hemisphere, not the sunlight. So its still the summer when the daytime is 24 hours and winter when the nighttime is 24 hours, those just happen during the opposite months from when those seasons occur for us in the Northern Hemisphere.
