@@Joesfosterdogs true but there is so much more than that. So many different skills. Jazz, pop, rock, lots and lots of info on him playing so many different genres Barbara Streisand to Boz To beatles to Michael Jackson.. Toto.so much you left out. He wrote music and also.sings and still does. He is also a writer. Thousands of diff albums under his belt. More than anyone else. Even in modern time.. he has played music of current bands to.. you really need to research alot more about him.
Got to see Toto live twice, last time was a few years ago on their 40 Trips Around The Sun Tour. I had front row seats right in front of Luke (literally 10 ft away) and his twin Bogners. Easily the best concert of my life and I've seen a lot in my 58 years! Got to visit with him and the rest of the band pre-show and got his book with an autograph along with a photo of the band with me and my wife. Luke is definitely one of the "guitar gods" and watching all of his virtuosity from a few feet away will make you fully aware of that. With all that he is humble, easy going and will crack you up with a joke all the time!
One of the coolest, humble most talented blokes, you will ever get to meet !! And who wouldn't want that sense of humour in a studio, on the road, and on the stage !!! Love this man to bits !!!!
Wonderful interview..love Luke. Terrific musician, artist, arranger, writer, vocalist & guitarist. Love to hear him talk about himself & the band. Humorous guy too. Toto to me has always been underrated. They should be in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But they are in the Musicians Hall of Fame. Hoping they create new music soon. Love everything this band does and will continue to do in years to come. Thanks for sharing.
Steve is always a great interview. How interesting that he had to “clean up some messes.” I’ve always found corporations always want to “make stars.” Stars aren’t always good. Steve Lukather’s playing is always good. He works at his craft and no corporation can take that away from him.
Totally agree with Lukather says about "Rosanna" being the song that defines the Toto band. Personally, I think "Rosanna" is the one of best pop songs recorded in this day and age; it was recorded in 1982 (36 years ago). Instrumentation, songwriting, performance and the serious jam at the end; its the most complete pop song to date...
Dean Col Jeff Porcaro’s drum riff in “Rosanna” is iconic. Musicians revere it to this day. Give a listen to Rick Beato’s “What Makes This Song Great” breakdown of “Rosanna” on RU-vid. If you haven’t seen it you’ll love it.
Saw Toto back in 80's a couple of times...Luke could take over the concert at times. An amazing guitarist, writer and singer. What a talent. The rest of the band was as good as it gets.
Kingdom of Desire is in fact one of the most intense Rock album ever released. Hendrix was THE artist for him, in my childhood it was Steve Lukather. I turned just 5 when I first listened to Toto’s first record Hydra. And sure.. all the music he made is already zenith (far more than top) in history of all time music and will be even more as time passes by... He’s a kind of Mozart in Rock Music, a real genius. Long life to Luke as an artist and as a person he is, talking in this interview so gently and with such a sense of humor having in front of him a “Millenial”. Unfortunately I never had the luck to meet him personally. Thank you for your music, and God bless Jeff and Mike. Thanks for this cool interview young men, well done!
Huge talent and one of the nicest, down to earth, humans to ever pick up a guitar. His book is a fun read, “The Gospel According to Luke”. Highly recommended.
Thank you Steve don't know if you will see this but 40 years later I've discovered you LOL. I heard all the music i never knew a ounce of what I never knew. I'm reading and it is wonderful to see your influence in all the music I grew up on. I'm 51 years old now and feel awakened.
Glad I found this. Whilst in lockdown been revisiting a lot of old music. Came across Joni Mitchell, 'Wild things run fast'. Had it since the 80's. Browsing the sleeve notes, "guitar: Steve Lukather". Never knew. The coolest of chill albums and not typical of his style. Strongly recommend.
Great channel. I dont know if you had a really decent look at Lukes discography before the interview. The legend has played with Aretha, Elton John , George Benson and look at the other musicians, theres Jay Graydon, Abraham Laboriel , Greg Phillingaines, David Foster etc. The LA A team . Look forward to more interviews.
Check out Quincy Jones The Dude from 1980/1. He plays all the guitars on that album. Many engineers still refer to The Dude as a reference for newly built recording studios.
All of our lives were changed when the Beatles appeared on the scene. I can’t begin to imagine being someone like Steve who ended up recording and performing with the likes of McCartney, Harrison, and Starr. How do you even SPEAK when you find yourself in such hallowed talent? Unbelievable!!!
Beautiful interview ❤️..this is my biggest musical hero of all times and I’m so grateful to have met him and got my guitar signed by him. Thanks for all the music Luke ❤️
Must tell ya, I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan & am very aware of your work with him & Quincy!! I’ve heard many times how much Michael admired Toto!! You may not realize it but any REAL fan of Michael knows the band Toto & specifically your name!! GREAT INTERVIEW!! 👍🏻🥂😚❤️
I’ve been listening to and admiring these guys for 4x decades but only saw what they looked like a few weeks ago. And yes I was REALLY into pop music. Goes to show you how much they’ve been buried by the industry moguls all this time.
Steve here in France (with TOTO or as a studio guitarist) you have lots of fans since a long time !! I don't care about Rock critics as Rolling Stone , because their favorite groups were often musical trends BUT you and Toto have made PURE music ....Miles Davis considered you as one of the best Rock band ever and all your fans know how you have improved Rock music forever
Jan wenner (rock n roll hall of fame president, and founder of rolling stone magazine), is a critic. He or the critics NEVER buy the albums. They get they for free. Fan buy the albums...so let the fans decide who goes into the hall of fame
Well Luke really takes on a flight on or around the 22cd minute! And I think he's so correct, though I don't think she should get too worried about the guys who hang out in the Canyon prior to him. That era was back in '65 and 6 while Luke was only ca 10 years old.
Just watched Tiran Porter interview. Figured he was influenced by Motown; but McCartney was his template. I guess many of you knew that based on his band that plays all The Beatles. Love Tiran's bouncy parts. Now, I hear the Paul influence.
I listened to his audiobook, it took me ages, the reason being I would stop to listen to the track he was talking about. Needless to say that was a lot of tracks, an amazing guitarist and song writer, Oh and vocalist just for good measure.
Luke has been his nickname since he was 15 when he joined Steve Porcaros high school band. 2 Steve in one band. They basically shortened his last name LUKE-ATHER
Bobby started losing his voice in early 2000, he was 10 years older than Luke, just couldn't hang as long as the rest. He was great back in the day though.
Kenny Post We all age, do you think Sting sings Roxanne at the same tonality than originally ? Bobby is not with Toto for other reasons than his voice, anyway.
@@RogerBiwandu I'm in no way criticising Bobby for being old, I'm only saying what he said himself, that he could no longer reach the cords to totos songs any longer. He sang with high intense for years. Sting couldn't come close to the high notes bobby blurted out. The man's pushing 70 years old , he no longer sings, he now produces . only luke and Paige have been a steady throughout the years with toto.
williams is a great COVER singer of bobbys songs. I hope steve finds another singer for when Toto returns with a new lineup, just to keep things fresh.
There is no more Toto. 1) Jeff Porcaro's widow saw to it that Steve Porcaro, David Paich and Luke are not to use the name anymore and 2) And Luke even said that last tour he looked around and it didn't feel like Toto with Jeff and Mike have passed. David's health got bad for a moment. And he even mentioned how it was no longer fun to perform Hold the Line with out Paich, Jeff and Steve Porcaro
I would have to agree. The topic always seems to get to "respect" from Rolling Stone etc....I think a far more interesting question would be why is Jeff's widow suing the band. Now that would be something to get agitated about not whether critics dig the band.
@@musicmansweden --she got a ton of dough and as i understand ruined the band...they are finished...from a reliable source. its the internet so keep researching but this is what i was told--read his bio, excellent...TOTO dealt with a lot of bad money management issues and accountants...
Lawsuit settled. Toto owed Sony more money than Record label owed Toto. That is why Band put out the record and toured. Rumors are TOTO will release another project and tour soon.
I greatly respected this interviewer until he asked Luke to wait until the camera was off before giving him a tip. He should have turned it down flatly.
