Yeah, but if you noticed, he also said that everything else was losing, too. It could be that Magz felt like that line offered him the best chance to sneak a hail mary past white, as there was a potential checkmate of white if white blundered.

Magnus (purposefully, as far as I can tell) played a dubious line in the opening. However, credit to Esipenko for finding a way to punish it and never relinquishing his advantage.

Lasker could deliberately play a slightly worse opening to get his opponent to attack violently hoping for him to make a mistake. Perhaps Magnus tried something similar?
