By far the best tip for buying any instruments. With the qc less expensive brands have shown lately, the brand doesn't matter near as much as it did 15 or 20 years ago. And avoid forums, too many gear snobs in the forums. Too many of us buy with our eyes.

I always play a guitar unplugged first when test driving, sometimes there is something about the guitar I don’t like and so I put it back, no need to plug it in, no matter how great it might sound. The sound doesn’t matter if I don’t like it otherwise. I bought a guitar without plugging it in, and normally I know I am buying it before I plug it in.
@death32815
@death32815 4 месяца назад
I've always played it first, if I like the look and feel the tone is a secondary trait that can be changed. If the most amazing sounding guitar ever found it's way into my hands, but it just looked like a plain Stratocaster and I didn't like the way it felt I wouldn't buy it, vice versa if the worst sounding guitar ever came along, but it was interesting and I liked the way it felt I would buy it. I actually have one that is an example of the second one, it is waiting for new pickups but it is currently behind the other two that need new pickups and my main axe that needs new tuning machines

Ignore any inconvenience that can be later set up (action, intonation, neck bow...). Bring your own workhorse guitar and make a fair comparison. Try different amps or pedals and make sure you get a sound that you're familiar with, you're testing a guitar, not an amp. If you can ask to save it and come back the next week, let the idea grow on you, maybe you'll decide to get a different thing. And yes, have fun and do things you enjoy, go for the one you dream of.

I have never bought a guitar in a shop. My main interests are old Yamaha classical guitars, old 1960s Made in Japan electrics (Teisco, Guyatone, Sakai, etc) and of course BARGAINS!!!! :-D. A major part of the fun for me is looking through used guitar listings, and finding the old gold, unwanted gems, and even beat up ol' dogs with a story to tell.

Check the knobs and switches. They should move smoothly and without extra effort or awkwardness, and they shouldn't make a lot of noise when plugged in. Noise and gritty, awkward-moving knobs and switches mean dirty pots and connections at best, maybe a faulty solder joint, and in the worst case need replacing.

Best tips: 1. go to the store when it‘s not maintime. The customers are more relaxed and you won‘t have to wait for a room etc. 2. try out without any thougt about the guitar before you played it. I‘m a bluesrock guitarist and one of my favourite guitars is a Schecter reaper 6 - totally uncommon for my genre, but it still fits my style perfectly

@GreenJeep26
@GreenJeep26 4 месяца назад
My two tips (one you covered in a way): First, get a guitar that compels you to play it. That's rule number one. Whether aesthetic or feel, you need to want to pick it up. Second, never try out new licks on a guitar you might be serious about. If you're not a new player, we all have tried and true licks, riffs or runs. All of us. Guess what? That's the stuff you use to try a guitar. You know how they feel on other guitar(s) you've tried or owned. It gives a 'like-for-like' comparison.
@5BBassist4Christ
@5BBassist4Christ 3 месяца назад
Guitar buying tip: Put the guitar down, go home, and get good with the gear you already have. It's not about the ax, but the swing that cuts down the tree. On a more serious side, whenever I go to buy a new guitar, I try to stay focused on what I'm looking for. Are you looking to replace your Stratecaster? Then don't waste time looking at Les Pauls. Know what you're looking for and why. However, you may find your true love when you least expect it. My main bass is an active 5 string soap-bar J-bass, and I found it when I went into the store looking for a passive 4-string P-bass. I did not buy it that day however, but a week later when I couldn't stop dreaming about her I knew I had to go back and see if she was still there.

@ Music is Win Tyler I watched a video where you declared 3 6 8 was the proper sequence to play Smoke on the Water. I had seen a live video of Richie Blackmore playing it. It dawned on me you are wrong. Richie barely moves his hand to play the riff. 368 cannot be correct. I reviewed the live performance then found a video of how to correctly play the riff. It is 5(AD) 3(DG) 5(DG) 5(AD), 3(DG) 6(DG) 5(DG), 5(AD) 3(DG) 5(DG) 3(DG), 5(AD). I love your videos but this is correct because Richie Blackmore says so! Per his live performance. Keep rocking! From a beginner, Tony
@tonyturner3609
@tonyturner3609 4 месяца назад
I originally agreed with 3 6 8. I was taught 5 7 9 then realized that was not the correct tone. Tried 3 6 8 on my own and found it to be closer. Watch your video agreed with you then realized it could not be correct after I rewatched a live performance. Too little hand movement. Now I have to relearn Smoke on the Water correctly after 2 months of playing it wrong. LOL Such is music!

Play lots of guitars once you have done your research and checked that the guitar is a good one. Once you have narrowed it down to a selection buy the one you can't put down or keep picking up. You will become a better guitarist if you play the guitar you enjoy playing the most because you will play it more. That means more than the colour to me. You fall in love with the guitar you enjoy playing and its finish.
