I've had the mirena coil for 5 months. The first 12 weeks was almost none stop bleeding, not as heavy as before but I still needed pads everyday. I've had no bleeding since week 12. No pain, no heavy bleeding, no periods anymore for me, I should of done this years ago. Hang on in there, it does get better ladies
I’m jealous! Mine expire next year…still have my cycle..But my periods were terrible before my 3rd baby, was placed on hormones and popped up with her. Overall…it’s a good contraceptive thought.
i got the hormonal IUD today. i had worked myself up so much before hand, crying loads and debating cancelling my appointment. i decided to do it, as 5 mins of pain=5 years of protection. keep in mind, everyone has different pain tolerance. i usually get really bad cramps and heavy periods, so i’m used to my womb cramping, though i have a low pain tolerance. when i sat down the nurses were lovely and spoke to me the whole time. i asked for local anaesthetic and putting that on my cervix was the worst part, though all it felt like was that sharp tickley pain when someone pokes your bellybutton! after that i could barely feel a thing. please don’t listen to all the comments you read online. only you know how you react to pain and at the end of the day, you should decide whether or not you get it based of if you’re comfortable, not because someone else thought ‘it was the worst pain ever!’
Me to I got mine today I did have or do have spotting, no cramping at all ...I have been spotting for 6 months now and I have heavy periods, I’m hoping the spotting stops and my period is normal
@@fresh5959 So far it’s been great. I had a super light period the second month. Super light as in all I needed was a panty liner. No period after that!! ❤️
Had my Mirena put in 16 months ago to aid long painful periods and to help possibly preventing polpys. I had a huge haemorrhage from polyps and was thus keen for any assistance. I am having it removed in a few weeks. I went from a UK size 10/12 to a size 20. The weight gain was so quick too! No difference in diet and exercised more due to lockdowns...but still the weight kept piling on. NEVER been overweight so was very alarming. Eat healthy...in fact I fasted for awhile as I was upset that I had gained so much. But it had zero effectiveness. Constant random cramping, migraines, infections, brain fog, blurry vision, incontinence...if I needed a wee...I had to go ASAP. Muscle aches, lower back pain. Really awful experience. Loved not having periods...but I want my body back. I don't want to have sex with my chap as I feel so fat and frumpy...from always being confident in my looks. So relieved it will be gone. Rather be celibate!
Hi Kenniana- Thank you so much for your message! I am so happy to know that you have been finding my videos helpful. I’m excited that I’m able to reach a wide audience (outside of Canada) to help educate women everywhere about IUC. Many patients are afraid or nervous about the idea of an IUD, mostly because they have no idea what to expect. I’m hoping that my videos will help to eliminate this “fear of the unknown” by providing patients with factual information about IUC. Good luck with your IUD insert! Remember: “5 minutes, 5 years!”👍😊 -Dr. Dervaitis
hai doc,can i ask something i had IUD for 9 months now after i giving birth on my second child this is my first time having this IUD. as of this momment i feel so hard huhu..
Do you have a video on how Mirena works on chronic pelvic pains that accompany endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and polyps? 🤔 Can you make a video on that as more than 10% women suffer endometriosis?
@@SamanthaNelson-xg7eisame no good reviews I came across…. Then I’m reading you can get reoccurring yeast infections and BV… the IUD can get lodged in your cervix and can lead to having it have to be surgically removed. I get mine next week…. Keep me posted on how it went for you!
Hi Natalie- So happy to hear that this video was helpful! It’s comments like yours that motivate me to continue producing new videos for my channel. I hope that you continue to see improvement in your cycles, hang in there! All the best, Dr. Dervaitis
I did think everyone's periods stopped and i was worried because i'm still having a period with the mirena.. i've had it inserted since august 2019,but after watching your video i now realise that i'm not the 30 percent of those having no period,so that's made me feel better..i had a smear last year, and everything was fine there..and the doctor said my coil is still there because she could see the strings!..i'm up and down with my periods though,i can go for 3 months without one, then 6 weeks, then 3 months again, but it's very very light compared to how i flooded before!!.. and i used to have massive clots, and was severley anaemic..,i now only use panty liners, and not thick night time towels, during the day and at night.. it's helped me so much..i go to alot of concerts and before getting the mirena my periods ruined my social life..i was having to work out if i would be on around the dates due when i went to concerts,or other social events,parties,,ect..but not anymore,i can now just relax knowing that i can go out and enjoy myself..
Same here.. Social functions are dependent upon whether I'll be having my periods or not.. Sleeping during the cycle is hell because I have to keep walking to the bathroom to ensure everything is OK. I had one inserted yesterday I hope it helps
I have a retroverted uterus and drove myself dizzy reading up on botched reviews. DR. K’s videos restored my confidence and gave me the courage to go ahead with the procedure. The insertion wasn’t nearly as bad as my worries. I had an endo biopsy a week earlier, which was super painful for someone with a low tolerance for pain, but this felt like sharp period cramps, not unbearable. I did take 800mg Motrin to help with the pain an hour prior, maybe that played a part too.
Thank you for your informative video. I'm going tomorrow to have a merina coil inserted. I am terrified, but reading afew ppls comments has helped. I'm having the coil inserted for heavy, painful periods and I suffer with terrible back pain which seems to be in line with my cycle so I'm hoping (only hoping) that this may improve if my monthly cycle improves. I'm 51 and having this in hopes of helping with menopause too. I've not heard anyone mention menopause but my doctor indicated that it may get me through it? Your thoughts on this are welcome. I'll come back tomorrow with an update of how the procedure went. See you on the other side.
The IUD does not have any impact on menopause itself (or symptoms related to hormone changes due to menopause)- but the hormonal IUD can help with bleeding problems related to the peri-menopause. The hormone changes you face are intense. I’ve had mine for almost 5 years, about to take it out due to expiration. Pros: less bleeding (when regulated) I used to have intense periods and it ruled my life monthly. Now I just bleed lightly and no major cramps Cons: emotional regulation (this is real)
Hi Jordan- That’s actually a great idea for a future video. But briefly: -yes, recommend anti-inflammatory medication afterwards to help with cramps (can also add acetaminophen) -yes, good to have liners on hand as there can be light bleeding during the “adjustment phase” -yes, hot water bottle or heating pad may be helpful for cramping -don’t forget to use back up contraception where necessary (depending on the kind of iud and when it was inserted in your cycle, it may not be effective right away- your doctor will advise you). -don’t forget to continue to use condoms for STI protection as needed Thanks for watching! -Dr. Dervaitis
I got Kyleena two days ago! I am excited for the long term reults. For the first 2 days I've had pretty heavy cramping that come and go every few hours, no spotting or bleeding yet. Taking Advil as needed.
Oh ok I was so worry I have my IUD a year ago . But just in 3 months I don't get my period. And I'm not pregnant. I did home test and also when to do a dr test. Thank you for the info.
Positive experience- I have had 2 mirenas and am having my 3rd in a few weeks. I used to have really painful and heavy periods, I had a lot of sick days because of it. I had a laparoscopy during my first Mirena insertion and they found ovarian cysts and the start of endometriosis(my mum had severe endo and required a hysterectomy, my sister also had endo and needed surgery to remove it from her bowel). It’s been lifesaver for my sister and I. I no longer get periods (only the occasional spotting), I sometimes get cramps still but they are no where near as painful and don’t last as long. I think I’ll be using this for my whole life besides when I decide to have kids.
I have had it for 7 mnths now and still the same as before I got the marina IUD, which is still heavy bleeding, prolong, severe cramps. I get 8-10 days period. I am still hoping it will get better real soon 🥺 Am I the only one IUD isn’t helping with period problems? Lots of people gets lighter after just few months.
Dr. Dervaitis: I just had my one-month follow up and my Mirena placement is good, however, the daily cramping that causes some jabbing/stabbing pain once or twice a day along with overall crampiness most of the day is distressing. Will the cramping ever go away? If so, any estimates on how long till I am pain free when not in menses? Thank you for these amazing videos.
Hi Susan- Unfortunately I can’t give give personalized medical advice over the internet.... Generally speaking, “adjustment phase” cramping can last 4-6 weeks (on average). It should not be part of a patient’s everyday experience with Mirena (forever...) We often use Mirena to HELP women with period cramping. If a patient has significant cramping beyond this time frame, I advise that they see their doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis
Hi Dr thanks for sharing 😊 I had one over a month ago that week I blade and discharge whole week I got so worried. But now I only use a pant liner even though sometimes it's dry but mostly I few drops than before I would go for 5,6 weeks bleeding because of fibrosis that makes me bleed. I feel much better to your teachering because I haven't had a first review since so I was getting concerned with drops ebut I understand every body is different I guess will see. I think my drops will get settled after a few months.
. Even I got my mirena inserted exactly 3 weeks back. 1st week I had discharge and last 8 days I have heavy cycles except that I didn't have heavy clots. Now I am feeling to get hysterectomy done? As the long cycles are impacting my professional and personal life.
Hi Doctor, first of all thank you so much for your videos, they're so informative and it's been so helpful. I have a silly question, I just had hysteroscopy and mirena insertion just last Thursday so 4 days ago. And aside from some very light bleeding from Thursday-Saturday, all I have had are some light cramps and while I can't say they're painful in comparison to period cramps I've had before they are slightly uncomfortable. I notice it the most if I'm sleeping on my side if my back isn't straight or sitting cross legged if I'm slightly hunched. Is there a right way to sit and sleep for a bedding down period post mirena? Or should I be concerned about this? I'm going for my post op appointment on 4th of November but thought I'd ask here first. Love from New Zealand! xx
Hello to my New Zealand viewer!😊 There’s no such thing as a silly question! You can sleep in whatever position you wish after an IUD insertion- the IUD itself is well protected within the uterus and your activity/ positioning won’t “shift” it or cause any problems. The symptoms you describe sound within normal, and I don’t think are related to your sleep position. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to tell the rest of New Zealand about my channel lol😊! Now on Instagram @ dr_dervaitis. -Dr. D
@Antoinette Murolo Tender breasts sometimes, I can get moody and irritable, also get a bloated feeling. My pms symptoms were pretty mild even before an IUD.
I just had my first cycle since implantation and my period pain was so much worse and took so much longer than normal. I have been bleeding and cramping for 10 days now.
Thanks for the information. I have 26 days with the mirena but, since I got it the pain is not gone. I have 20 days with my period. Is this normal? What should I do?

Dear Dr Dervaitis, thanks for the useful video first of all. I have inserted Mirena one year ago, I kept on having my period rather regularly, till 2 months ago, when it suddenly disappeared. However, it looks as if I have the same symptoms that I experience during normal periods (I put on weight, mostly fluid ritention probably), feel nervous, back pain etc... is that normal? Appreciate your reply, thanks in advance

Mam why is dz happening? Is it due to IUD or any other problem? @Dr. Kristina Dervaitis

Your videos are immense informative and I am recently gone through the same treatment and feeling much better. As I am obese and I have to loose weight. Therefore, I am curious to know that can I exercise, lift weights, run and is there any limit on this. And what precaution should be taken generally.
I had mine since July this year for my heavy flow period... I am 45 years old and got my ligation 9 years ago. My period is less now but still i have cramps and still longer days , just one week or less interval days and period again....its so annoying...hoping to stop or atleast regular days period..
I got mine today. Almost fainted. Light headed and vomited plus some cramps and light bleeding after insertion. I got it to help with my bad menstruation. I am hoping it will work for me with no bad side effects.
any updates? i’m traveling in october and my monthly aligns with it. i’m scared that it won’t work as intended 🥺 i’m getting my mirena on august 10th. did it get lighter or easier for you? i suffer with extremely heavy monthlys and im kind of depending on this bc method to help with it.
@@oniikoi That is why I got the IUD on March 22. It’s been 7 mnths now and I don’t see any improvement such as less bleeding and less cramps. It’s frustrating but I don’t want to take it back out yet. I am giving it a chance and will see after a year. How about you?
I've had an IUD since July and another reinserted in December. I've had no bleeding on my periods nor anything really noticeable when I'm supposed to be getting my period other than slight mood changes. The past week I've had some cramping and breast tenderness which is bizarre for me. Has anyone else here had this? Is that normal to happen once in a while or no?
Removal of mirena today was soooooo painful. I had minor surgery when it was inserted at the same time as having fibroids shaved down. Thought removing it 5 1/2 years later might be difficult as my sister had minor surgery to remove hers due to having a tilted womb. I decided to have no further coil added as I'm 55yrs and want to know if I am menopausal.
Sorry to hear this. Your situation sounds unique/ ie. not typical (in uncomplicated situations, removal usually causes minimal cramping and is not very painful). -Dr. Dervaitis
Hi Dr.Dervaitis, I am at approximately at my 3-4th months on mirena .I have experienced lighter periods/spotting although prolonged periods .I am having painful cramping which does concern me. As well my acne has flared up a bit. Is this all in the norm? Thank you!

Hi Pamela- Yes, one strategy for dealing with “breakthrough” bleeding on the levonorgestrel IUD is to concurrently prescribe the combined birth control pill (for a brief period of time). It is thought that adding back some additional estrogen may help to stabilize the lining. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thanks for the video. Are you able to speak to what the adjustment phase is like when switching from the birth control pill to an IUC to treat period problems?
Hi doctor, thank you for your video. I would like to ask you only one question, I inserted Mirena yesterday, because of bleeding much. Can I do physical exercises after some time ⏲️?
Having strings checked is a very simple examination (different from the insertion process). It usually just involves a bimanual exam (examining hand in vagina to feel for strings, very quick) and possibly a speculum exam (like at a Pap test). Some health care providers will order an ultrasound to check IUD position, but a string check in the office is much quicker and less invasive). -Dr. Dervaitis
Asalamu Alaikum dear sister❤ how does this affect salah and intercourse or fasting? I had the implant inserted 2 weeks ago. Do I still observe the cycle or only if there’s bleeding? Jazaki Allahu khayr❤
I had mirena coil in 2017 november because of heavy periods. Now i get waterly discharge and i have notised that i have pain and numbness in my right hand. Is this norml side effects.
Hello Msema- 1) Your right hand numbness is not caused by the IUD. I can think of no pathophysiologic mechanism that would link the IUD to unilateral hand numbness. 2) I can’t comment on your “watery discharge.” Change in menstrual bleeding is common with Mirena. Change in other “discharge” is less common. Hormone changes can sometimes affect the normal production of vaginal secretions (“physiologic discharge”). Discharge can sometimes be associated with infection, so you would need to be checked for this. I’d recommend that you see your doctor for further investigation (of both issues.) -Dr. Dervaitis
Hi Dr keristina. I am wanted to remove my iud since 01/2019 went walk in clinic to meet a female doctor to remove iud but she couldn't see string and she sent me to ultrasound. I have been waiting for a month and i came back to her and she couldn't catch the string again, so she sent me to gyn and i am still waiting. Now is week tree, how long it take to wait gyn.i am in canada. Thank you somuch
Hi, Dr. Dervaitis. Thanks for all your videos. It's a big help. I just got my Mirena IUD last January during my period. I had 3weeks bleeding after inserting, then on February I had 3 weeks period and my period start on the same date last January. And this month of March, I didn't get my period. Is it normal to skip period in IUD?
Some patients stop having periods with the hormonal IUD. But if there is a chance you may be pregnant, take a test (the chance of pregnancy with an IUD is 2/1000). If you are concerned, talk to your doctor. -Dr. Dervaitis
Hello mam My Mirena(levoorgestrel) is inserted in the month of August .. Till date bleeding didnt stop permanently .. Upto how many days my periods will be stopped permanently? I can also feel breast-itching sometimes .. Why does it happen?
Hello- About 30% of women will stop having menstrual cycles with Mirena (ie, about 70% will continue to have a period). It can take many months (even up to a year) for amenorrhea (the absence of bleeding) to develop. The longer the IUD has been in place, the longer the levonorgestrel has had a chance to thin out the uterine lining. I have not read anything about breast itching as a side effect of Mirena, nor have any of my patients complained of this symptom (although breast tenderness may occur in some women). -Dr. Dervaitis
I have no bleeding at all.. but I just got my IUD replaced with a new IUD and all of the sudden I'm having acne. It's been 6 or so months and it's not tapering off.. I'm still breaking out. I'm also 33.
Hey doctor, thank you for sharing, I would like to ask you, IS IT NORMAL TO LOSE YOUR PERIODS FROM TIME OF GIVING BIRTH UNTIL TWO YEARS WHILE USING IUD BIRTH CONTROL?
Hey doctor 👋🏻 Valerie here with a question! I have the endometrium hyperplasia - heavy bleeding. It is considered as perimenopause as I am 47 now. My gynae gv me both hormone pill & T.acid, however the bleeding persist, not heavy but prolong more than 3 weeks. My lining thickness is now 24mm. My gynae suggested me to do D&C and at the same time insert Mirena. Do you think this could resolve my problem in long term? Thank you.
Hi Alison- Unfortunately, I can’t give personalized medical advice over the internet. This is a unique situation and considered “off label” use of Mirena- although it IS reported in the literature, and listed as a first line management strategy for endometrial hyperplasia without atypia in a guideline from the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in the UK... Your physician, who has all of your relevant medical information and the details of your case, will guide you towards the best treatment plan for you. All the best, Dr. Dervaitis
@@dr.kristinadervaitis789 Hi Dr. Dervaitis, based on the guideline you mentioned, I am in this category. To treat this problem, I do not have many choices, either Mirena or E.Ablation.. so I choose Mirena. Just that after D&C and simulteneously insert Minera.. does this procedure sound logic? Or I should recover from D&C first then only proceed with Mirena? Hope you could enlighten me. Many thanks.
I got my iud on September 14th. Got my period on September 25th. It’s Oct 15th ( 20 days later) and I still have my cycle. My MD doesn’t seem concerned. Should I be? I have no pain at all.
I had my mirena removed three months ago after about 6 years, and went to get a new one today. They said my cervix is too small now for a new one and it may be due to scar tissue from my removal. Should I get a second opinion? Is this something that can actually happen, in your experience? I looked it up and didn't find any information about it. I may also be ovulating, and I read that makes the cervix smaller. I was devastated to get this news. Mirena is the only thing that has worked for me

I got my iud 5 months ago, and the first 2 1/2 weeks I had heavy bleeding. Then I would randomly get spotting here and there but never got my period again since. Should I be worried or is this normal?
@@lleaha Honestly it is such an individual experience for everyone. As far as the insertion pain if that is something giving you trepidation I would see about a sedation option. The nice thing is you have options and can switch to something else if you aren't a fan. Everyone is different with insertion. I had pain when mine was inserted and it was like having intense period cramps/ contractions. I have also heard of women having no pain. The pain did not last long at all and was worth it for five years of protection against pregnancy. If its any reassurance I still have a full head of hair.

* positive review here*. not many side effects . so far so good. i can't say having my period longer while adjusting to the IUD is a negative as its only been a month. I had my OB appt on may 11th and decided during my visit after talking with my Dr. to insert the mirenia. my period came on 9 days later and its much lighter having an IUD. it is now June 2nd and im still spotting off and on but when i get some minor cramps which makes me use the bathroom to check and its a light period. i haven't experience consistent cramps like this since i first got my period when i was 12. im now 45 so its a bit reminiscent of those times. is this normal to have these cramping feelings and a period that lasts this long? its been 8 days. before mirenia it last 4 but very heavy. is this my body adjusting to the device? how long should i wait to see my Dr.? Hi Doc. I have a question, I got Mirene fitted on 17th Aug. I don't have any kids yet. I used to always have very heavy menses which caused iron deficiency anemia as well. Doctor then did the D&C procedure and took out all the polyps and the biopsy resulted the 95% were normal. 5% could become pre cancerous and therefore doctor suggested Mirena. Initially no side effects and then bleeding started on and off. For last 5 days, I have started having extremely painful cramps which start in the evening and go through the night. I had discussed with my gynec as well. She has told me this a side effect of Mirena and has suggested over the counter medicine.its not working, I am in severe pain. I want to know your take on this and if something I can do to help. Hopefully you will read this and would reply.

Hi Doc. I do understand your concern. But I just want to confirm if my scenario described above are natural in the regular course of usage of Mirena. I'll be grateful if you just answer that.
I have been through this. One of the things that helped me is using a heating pad. I still have the spotting too. So trying to determine when my actual period happens is hard. I rely on other systems. I have also tried different yoga poses as well. I also try figuring out what foods affect my periods. And don't eat them till it's over. Changing my diet for that period of time helped too. I hope these suggestions helped and you feel better.

Hi, I got Kyleena inserted 5 days ago (after 11 years of taking YAZ) and since yesterday I get these awful migraines. I never got migraines before... could this be in relation with the withdrawal of estrogen? Or will this be a permanent problem? Thanks.
Hi Sama- It’s difficult to say... Headaches are not a common side effect of the levonorgestrel IUD, but they are sometimes described as a side effect of hormonal contraception (although, more commonly, related to estrogen rather than progesterone). I noticed when I got on the depo my sex drive went down and i finally bult the courage to talk to my doctor about it and she just kinda blew me off and I felt like she was almost making fun of me she just told me my boyfriend should do more "foreplay" is it possible for these hormones in the depo to make me decrease interest because its just so frusterating and uncomfortable. Its starting to cause problems in my relationship. I dont want to be on any birth control just because of this experience but I dont wanna get pregnant. would a nonhormone one be better?
Depo-Provera works by suppressing ovulation, and it’s theoretically possible that ovulation suppression may lower libido. The copper IUD does not supress ovulation, and the majority of patients using the hormonal IUD still ovulate, so you might consider talking to your doctor about those options. -Dr. Dervaitis

Hi doc, just had my IUD inserted january, 2020. Right after childbirth. I had my first menstruation on june 26 this year and it was long but not-so-painful menstruation but i am so worried i still i still don't have my monthly menstruation yet since june
Hello- Unfortunately I can’t give personalized medical advice advice over the internet. But generally speaking: in a post partum patient, menstruation will depend on the type of IUD (copper versus hormonal) and also whether the patient is breastfeeding. See also video #7. If you are concerned, see your doctor. -Dr. Dervaitis

I got mirena like 2 wks ago and I been having heartburn That’s a side effect that is not listed but I read a comment where another lady after having mirena iud she also started having heartburn:(
I’ve had my coil in for 3 and half years. I’m 35. This is the first time I’ve missed a period. I’ve taken a test, and I’m not pregnant. But does this mean when I have my new coil, it will stay stopped, or will it restart?

I had it inseeted a year ago. I had no periods for 9 months and suddently periods have rerturned and lasting a lot longer. Plus constant spotting?? What happened?? I was enjoying oeriod free life
Hello- A sudden change in your menstrual bleeding might be a sign that the IUD has shifted or is no longer in the right position (I’m not saying this is for sure what has happened, but it’s a possibility). Or there might be another cause for the new bleeding. I’d recommend that you see your doctor for further investigations. -Dr. Dervaitis
Thanks so much for this video, I'm getting the Mirena Tomorrow and this is helpful!! I have a new life coaching channel also! Feel free to stop by Thx again!
Hi Gwen- Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback! I will definitely check out your channel 👍. Help spread the word about IUC! 😊 -Dr. Dervaitis
@@dr.kristinadervaitis789 Thanks so much! I got mine installed yesterday so far so good.. Only complaint is I feel full down there.. lol .. and like I can feel the strings but I hope they will soften.
I have Mirena IUD for over 3 years and no period. Cramping is rare and other period symptoms are rare as well. So far its been a good experience, although not knowing my cycle is odd, since I can't follow the cycle I don't know when my pms occurs.
I use to get really heavy periods that would last 2 -3 days, total period would be 5 days. With my heavy period I couldn’t go anywhere bc I would just leak through and would get quarter size clots. Decided to get Mirena and it really helped with heavy periods but gave me worse migraines and longer periods, they went from 5 days to 2 weeks now. It also makes me feel blotted and have gained weight with each Mirena, I’m on my second Mirena, I’ve kept the Mirena bc it really helped with the heavy periods. The first week of my period is on and off and very light, 2nd week it’s like a period, it’s not heavy and don’t have to change that often throughout the day. I am 3 years away from being 50 and can’t wait to get it out.
I had my Mariena IUD for 5 years now and had an awesome experience. I still gotten my period regularly every 28 days. However I just got my new replacement IUD and think it officially stopped my periods. I am currently on 5 weeks no period so a week late 😔. I prefer to have my period every month so guess this is my end of Journey with Mariena. I am having to many pregnancy dreams and PMS when it is highly unlikely I am pregnant so no good. It was awesome while it lasted.
Hi, I got my IUD inserted last Sept, so it's been 5 months so far. My periods have been longer and heavier, but the most frustrating thing for me has been the excessive discharge to where to where my panty liners & underwear are soaked with watery discharge & sometimes smell. How much of an adjustment period should I give my body, and should I be concerned about this discharge? is there anything that can be done besides removal.

I have been diagnosed with hyperplasia & will be getting a D&C in two weeks then immediately after the Mirena IUD inserted. I'm really hoping this helps with my extremely heavy & very large clots...I'm 49 & never thought I'd be getting an IUD. Feeling anxious about it!!
Hi now how you.how about mirena insertion .because i have same problem .but my hevy period again start .yesterday .and mirena came out with blood .😢😢😢😢
Hi Bisharo- Sometimes the IUD string is not visible-it often is just tucked up inside the cervical canal (and easy to reach with the right tools, which a Gynecologist will have in their office). Please see my video #13 “IUD Removal FAQ” which addresses this issue in detail. Because Gynecologists are specialists, it can sometimes take several months to get an appointment. I’d suggest that you watch video #21 “Where Can I Go to Get an IUD Inserted?” which discusses the Canadian RAICE network (Rapid Access IUC Centres of Excellence). If there is a RAICE clinic near you, you might be able to get in more quickly to have your IUD removed (the clinics do removals as well as insertions). -Dr. Dervaitis
I love your channel. Because of the information and reassurance you gave me, I got Mirena. My cardiac surgeon, cardiologist, Primary Care doctor, and OB/GYN surgeon recommended Mirena after my bicuspid aortic valve replacement with a mechanical On-X valve. They wanted me to get away from estrogen-containing birth control options. I was very hesitant to switch off of the NuvaRing because it worked so well for me for 15 years. But after listening to my care team and then watching your informational videos, I felt confident enough to give it a try. Your videos gave me the confidence to proceed, despite my going-in position of really being dead set against changing my birth control method after so much else changed during my open heart surgery. I got my Mirena yesterday, and I'm confident this is a beneficial option for me given my risk profile. Thank you for helping me see the benefits.
Thank you so much for this comment! am so happy to hear that you found my channel helpful! Wishing you all the best with your new Mirena. -Dr. Dervaitis
Hi! Thanks for the info. What about periods that are too long? I’ve had one inserted to try to help having basically 2 weeks of spotting before my actual typically 4 day flow. Currently been bleeding continuously for a full month after insertion “adjustment period”, which I REALLY Hope stops soon. But my main concern is that after that I’m no longer bleeding 2-3 weeks at a time.
Hi Melissa- I’d recommend that you also watch my video #7) “Is This Bleeding Normal? What to Expect With Your Bleeding After an IUD Insertion. It may take several months before you can tell what your periods will be like (long term) with a levonorgestrel IUD, so try to be patient. The longer the hormone has a chance to be released into the lining of the uterus, the better things get (generally speaking). Sometimes cycles can be prolonged in the first few months, but this generally improves over time. -Dr. Dervaitis
I've fibroid and heavy bleeding, hormone pills couldn't work for me. My doc tells me to consider getting mirena.... i'm pretty nervous but if it can stop the bleeding soon i'd be happy
I am sure that what the pharmaceutical that makes the Mirena IUD has figureed out how much progestin average/optimum dose it releases for majority of women. Can there be cases of insufficient dose and patients might need to supplement with bit more progesterone/progestin to get that happy average?
