Cleaning up one of the recent Portuguese Mausers that have shown up on the market. This 1904/39 model came from ‪@AtlanticFirearms‬ and one of their recent bundle deals with surplus ammo and a bayonet. Nice to see an influx of these lately.

Very nice video sir, with excellent detail. "Casual Collector Gloves"...love it!🤣...I appreciate the mention as well. Yes, that appears to be an original sling, I noticed Legacy Collectables has them in stock, I think I'll be getting one for mine. As always great work, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the kind words! Leather just looks good on these rifles so I think my buddy lucked out. I appreciate seeing the examples you get as well and have to admit they caused some damage to my bank account. All the best in the new year.

@MidwesternFC thank you. I appreciate that. Yes, I agree the leather ones look best. Out of curiosity, what did you clean the stock with?
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
So strangely enough, I was out of my usual cleaner (simple green or something natural) so I used some 'Goo Gone' and it did really well. Having not used it much before I immediately cleaned it again after then did one coat of BLO. I've had good luck with it in the past not affecting the wood so felt OK doing it but it wasn't mine so I made sure to test on a small section internally first. Very pleased with the results. @@The_Casual_Collector

@MidwesternFC very cool, I may have to try that myself lol, thanks for sharing that tip. I need to get to work on cleaning mine up now.
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
Of course. One last thing is that I think it worked well for me because most, if not all, the cosmoline was still 'jelly-ish' so nothing was hard crusted on there, just sticky. Hope yours cleans up well. @@The_Casual_Collector

Very kind of you, thank you. Of course each item is different, but as a general rule I like the 'Big 45 Frontier' metal cleaner. Inexpensive and works great. If you don't have that, 0000 steel wool works good for surface rust too. If its deeper pitting/rusting it may require something more drastic. I was lucky as this comsomiline was still in jelly form and not hard crusted so came off easily with some mineral spirits. Good luck, hope yours cleans up well!

What did you use to clean up the stock? White spirits for the metal? Thanks and great video!!!
@MidwesternFC

Hello there. for the metal parts I used mineral spirits and for the stock, because the cosmo was very light and runny, I used 'goo-gone' and it works well for that kind of thing and doesnt harm the wood. Thanks for the comment!

i have a important question i bought one of these and its nice like yours but the rear receiver screw that threads in the hole behind the bolt is messed up and needs to be replaced, could you tell me if another mauser rifle screw would work or is this screw only made for this rifle
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 3 месяца назад
Most of those screws are the same, but I'd measure just to be sure. Good luck. Great rifles.

I have one of these sitting in the box right now, wiwitng till the spring to fully clean it off outside. What did you use for the metal/wood and how did you clean the sling? I have a black leather one on it like your friends example
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 5 месяцев назад
I use mineral spirits for metal parts, it just melts the cosmoline right off. For the sling I used Picard leather conditioner and have had great luck with it over the years. Hope yours turns out nice!

I’m curious as to how you cleaned the stock on this rifle. Always looking for better ways of restoring or cleaning up the milsurps I buy. Thanks, and nice job.
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
I too am always looking for better ways for clean up. For this stock it was still very 'wet' cosmoline so I was able to get rid of most of it by just using some goo-gone as it helped with the random patches or harder, sticky residue. I tested on some other wood finishes first, then a little on the inside and it worked well with no issues for the wood. When it comes to thicker or more caked in cosmoline I usually use the 'hair dryer' or 'summer outside in a garbage bag' method. Although it takes longer, it will inevitably all seep out of there to be wiped off. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Always nice to touch base with other collectors! All the best on your projects going forward into the new year. 🎉

I’ve watched some other videos you’ve posted and they didn’t disappoint. Haven’t tried the goo gone yet. Usually mineral spirits. If I have to strip the stock then a lot more research is done do by the time I’m done it’s as close to a factory referb as possible.
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
I love mineral spirits for metal. I don't use it on wood just because I feel it dries it out more than necessary, but just my opinion. I'm the first to admit that I don't always have the right answer. There is always something new to learn! - Thanks for the kind words. I hope to keep improving over time. I started this channel to force myself to do better when it comes to videos. @@williamobrien6418

@@MidwesternFC yes the mineral spirits will dry out the wood, but most of the milsurps I get are soaked in cosmoline , and I use BLO on my stocks at the end any ways. Still looking for the best method though.

@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
Honestly, I just gave it a good scrub and then a coat of boiled linseed oil. It was in great condition under all the dirt and grease so I didn't have to do too much. I'll give he another coat or two soon but I was very surprised at the condition underneath the surface gunk. Thanks for watching!

I used some 'goo-gone' as it doesn't harm the wood. You can also just use a cleaner like 'simple green' or something like this. If you are unsure, dilute it with some water. I hope you get a good one!@@Sleepycroc1204

what did you do to clean the wood without messing up the finish ?
@MidwesternFC
@MidwesternFC 6 месяцев назад
For this stock I used 'goo-gone' believe it or not. It worked great and kept the wood looking nice. I then cleaned it with a few coats of BLO. It was a soft but sticky cosmoline so nothing to stubborn or crusted. Thanks for watching and good luck with your projects.

Honest critique. This would have been better billed as an “unboxing”. This is the first video I watched from you, and I’m not compelled to watch more. I like Masers and I like “restoration” videos, especially firearms. I was hoping to watch some of your process of “cleaning” as was referenced in the title. Unfortunately, there was none. The style simply didn’t hold my attention. Just my 2 cents.

I appreciate your honesty. It's nice to get feedback like this. Moving forward, I think I will include more about the process/steps I use as I've gotten many questions about it so thank you. I have a few other unboxings where I show more of the clean up process and maybe its time to return to that format. I genuinely appreciate your comment.
