Layman terms: Not CRC, this is an error in judgment. Fits nicely on a Nikon DSLR camera. I own the Nikon Reflex-Nikkor C 500mm F/8 lens and this Nikon 500mm F/8 N version was sent to me to be sold. In hindsight more time should've been given but instead I tested this lens without any help from any sources so that I could not be manipulated into anyones opinion. I made a quick comparison to what I own and with basic understanding of this lens, I made a quick judgement. The only advantage I have found is that with this newer version, the Nikon Reflex-Nikkor 500mm F/8 N lens is that you can shoot closer to your subject.

Use a shutter remote / delayed shutter to prevent vibrations

Why did you get the C version and not just the N version?

Update: Hi. The C version is my personal catadioptric Lens. I keep this lens as a back up when I go on outdoor trips and I don't want to lug a bunch of heavy equipment. I owned it for years. The newer N version was not familiar to me but I was asked to sell it. In hindsight more time should've been given on this lens but I was rushed. Sorry for delay to your question.

Nikon Z6 (& ii) has the best focus peaking and ibis for Fmount manual lenses.

so it basically combines a zoom lens with a normal lens?

Well... The Nikon Nikkor 500mm Catadioptric lens is just a telephoto lens... The old Nikkor 500mm (mirror lens) wasn't able to get as close as this newer model and so I thought I would point this feature out. I wouldn't use it for a macro but hey at a push if this is what you have then go for it.

what modifications were necessary to mate the D300 with the 500mm f/8 lens?

None... The 500mm F/8 catadioptric lens is made to fit all Nikon camera... Similar to AiS... Of course with Digital you will not have aperture readout unless you have Non-CPU lens data program... The D300 has this program built-in so you will be fine.

Not everything I do is done with reading about how something is made or works... Sometimes I take a quick guess as to what it might be. If I took the time to remember every single definition to the subject I would spend less time doing what I want to do. So honestly, do you want to know more about CRC lenses then I will tell you to go elsewhere because honestly... I care little about the technical terms and more about what you can I actually do with equipment. I am trying to improve my videos to make everyone happy without being paid for it but I keep these old video to show I am human being.
