NIKON 500MM REFLEX MIRROR LENS REVIEW

I finally picked up one of these old girls and it is a real gem. If you look around a little bit, you can find them loaded out with all the accessories and most of them have very little use on them so they are basically brand new. Couple this with the fact that most modern mirrorless cameras have good focus peaking in them, and you can focus like a boss on this old glass!
Look me up on Instagram @lowstressphotog as well for photos that I capture or that are captured of me!

I love these reflex lenses. You have to work around their flaws such as manual focus, shallow DoF, low contrast, sometimes distracting bokeh & lack of sharpness but they are light, small & above all: FUN! I've just received my 3rd 500mm f8 (Samyang branded) but due to the current Corona virus lockdown here in Blighty, can only play with its macro close-focussing on my Nikon Z6. One aspect of using these lenses with modern mirrorless(!) cameras is focus peaking where in-focus areas are outlined in colour that makes manual focussing so much easier.

Yes! The new crop of cameras has really breathed new life into these older lenses for me. I really enjoy shooting vintage glass now and look forw to going out with my old pentax and minolta glass. It is just plain fun.

Fun video. I had the Canon 500mm mirror lens with my A-1 in the 80s. I loved that lens and will pick up one of these when I can.

Reflex lenses are known for their typical "donut shape bokeh" in unsharp highlights, resulting from the shadow of the central secondary mirror in the front. This may lead to busy background... You either love or hate this effect.
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 5 лет назад
This makes sense now that you mention it. It is an interesting effect to be sure. Just not sure how good it looks in some situations. I guess it would be a good idea to do test shots if you planned to shoot with this lens on some sort of project, so you could determine if the background was going to conflict or not. I am thinking about trying it on portraits to see how it would look...of course outside. 😬 Thanks for bringing that up!

I have both of the lenses you show in this video. I really like the Reflex lens for its portability and compactness, however, it really does require a lot more work than the 200-500 5.6 E ED G VR lens. I like the 200-500 because it is a great value for the money and pretty sharp for the money. The VR works extremely well too. When I want to challenge myself, I will use the Reflex. I have the 500mm Nikkor C version. I am heading to Portugal in March if COVID does not stop me and I am probably going to take the Reflex for convenience. Thanks for the review.

That is awesome. I love how compact the mirror lens design is. If I were needing to keep the kit small, that would be my choice too. 👍📸

I vaguely remember that the filters are part of the optical formula. Was one of them clear? I just did the research, there should be 5 filters, the missing (?) filter is the L37c; is this on the lens? And yes, the filters are to be used at all times as they form part of the optical formula.
@davidsaylors

Yes sir, the clear one is on the lens. You are correct. I took it out and cleaned it when I got the lens. Thank you for the tip, I really appreciate it. 👍📸

Just got mine yesterday. I want to photo shoot some wildlife in my area, Using a Nikon F-3. How fast should my shutter speed be?
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 4 года назад
I would say at least 1/500 second or faster, with faster being better. Probably need full sunlight and a pretty fast film speed for that though.
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 4 года назад
I just checked and ISO 400 film and f8 aperture results in a shutter speed 1/1250 second which should work pretty well to freeze action on a sunny day.

Hi, I have a Sony A7RIII and would like to test this mirror lens on my camera. I have other nikon lenses coming from my old one, and I am using them via an adaptor. My question is; This lens is possible to use in the same way? I mean, by its special construction is possible to use a converter from Nikon to Sony E. Thanks by your answer.
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 2 года назад
Yes, this lens will work in the way you want, but with no automatic functioning at all. You will have to manually control the lens all the time. 👍📸

Thank you for sharing this video David. The information is organized the presented very well. I have seen 500 mm mirror lenses on eBay from $30.00 to $100.00. Most of those were off brands. There is an adapter that can be purchased for a Nikon camera. I may give it a try.

I have another video coming out soon, if you are not in a hurry that covers something I discovered about this particular lens that I have and that is that it doesnt work well in direct sun. As long as the scene is overcast or shaded, it is wonderfully sharp, but in direct sun, all the images were a bit out. If you didnt plan to print over an 11x14, it wont matter, but it is a thing. 👍

I would really like to get ahold of one of the 1000mm mirror lenses and play with it photographing the moon or something like that. I have a very similar 500mm f/8 reflex lens that I'm trying to figure out, but it's from a second-hand company. It has some serious aberrations away from the center optical axis. Your images are enviable compared to the ones I get and I wonder what I'm doing wrong. The lens mount is a M42X.75, (T2) which is made to go onto telescopes. The coupler to my Nikon cameras are probably the reason why my images look so bad. I guess your 500mm f/8 lens is by Nikon, and probably made for the Nikon body you use it on. Thanks!
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 4 года назад
I see your plight. Sometimes it is the coupler like you mention. I have a bad coupler that came with a lens I bought. Sometimes it is the lens itself too. I recommend trying it with a tripod before giving up on it. It might be from camera movement as it shows up really early with these large telephoto lenses. Hope you get it figured out soon! 🥴📸🤷🏻‍♂️

You gotta remember, that back in the film-only days, a fixed aperture lens could become un-usable if the lighting conditions changed too much for your film's latitude. Nowadays we can just change our film-speed by pushing buttons.

Would you recommend this for dx? id imagine with the 1.5x crop this thing would be an awesome stationary wildlife lens!
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 4 года назад
Yes, as long as you have either IBIS or a really good tripod. Also, it would take some practice to get focus quickly as manual focus isnt super easy, but other than those two items, it should be fine for wildlife. Like you said, it would equate to a MUCH long lens in the effective field of view as well. An XT4 would make a great host for this lens...👍📸

I ask for help: does anyone have the technical drawing / detail of the focus lever for the latest version Ninon Nikkor Reflex 1000 f / 11? It is nowhere to be found and maybe a technician would make it for me: thank you all !!!

When you say “focus lever” what do you mean exactly? A part INSIDE the lens or is it something on the OUTSIDE of the lens?
@francescobrisotto5013
@francescobrisotto5013 3 года назад
@@davidsaylors iIn the Nikon Nikkor Reflex 1000 f / 11 (latest versions) there are two externally threaded holes in which the lever must be screwed to help focus. Unfortunately these levers have disappeared in most of the lenses used (the only ones that are found). With a photo it would be easier to understand.

i got this lens recently wish to use it with nikon d7200 (dslr) can it be used ??? found focussing issues with it manual focussing is very critical guide in this regard. thank u.
@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 5 лет назад
Unfortunately, this being a manual focus lens, it is a little difficult to focus with. Does the D7200 have focus magnification in live view? That would let you see if you are closer to focus. Other than that, just practice a lot with it till you become familiar with what the focused image looks like in the viewfinder. But liveview is probably better...

@davidsaylors
@davidsaylors 4 года назад
Awesome!!! Another Georgian!!!! To answer your question, yes, it will work on that camera, you might have to tell it to release the shutter without the lens and without focus confirmation. Those two things are usually turned on from Nikon. Once you do that, it should let you take pictures just fine. Remember though, the D3300 is crop sensor so effectively this will appear like a 750mm lens since it is only reading the center of the image of project coming from the lens.
