1905 IN MY MERRY OLDSMOBILE By Billy Murray Played On Victor III Phonograph Automobile Song

Composed in 1905 and recorded here in 1909 this is Billy Murray singing Gus Edwards' beloved automobile song, "In My Merry Oldsmobile" on an early Victor Grand Prize label single-sided record. As with my previous video, "Under The Anheuser Bush", "In My Merry Oldsmoble" was definitely not a good selling record and it is very difficult to find today especially in nice playing condition. I have only found 2 of these records on Victor in 25 years. It is played here on one of my Victor III phonographs with an oak horn. I have it sitting atop a very early model XIV Victrola (such a shame as now the XIV hardly gets played!). As always, thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope you enjoy the video.

This amazing man was my great uncle. He was married to my great Aunt, Madelyn Murray, and my mother was his niece. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

Born in Philly but has a strong flat British accent. I wonder where his parents lived before coming to Philly , or if this is the Philly dialect of the time.

@@LeonardAngussmith His parents were Irish immigrants. They moved to Denver Colorado when he was about 5 years old and that is where he was raised. On comic songs, he often deliberately sang slightly flat, which he felt helped the comic effect. Also, this recording was made before microphones, which means "singing" meant shouting as loudly as possible into a horn so there is that also...

'You can go as far as you like with me in my merry oldsmobile' I laughed when I heard that one, it has some rather different connotations in the 21st century!
@michaelf7093
@michaelf7093 2 года назад
No, it had the same connotations in 1905. Just a subtle innuendo.

Young Johnny Steele has an Oldsmobile He loves his dear little girl She is the queen of his gas machine She has his heart in a whirl Now when they go for a spin, you know, She tries to learn the auto, so He lets her steer, while he gets her ear And whispers soft and low... Come away with me, Lucille In my merry Oldsmobile Down the road of life we'll fly Automobubbling, you and I To the church we'll swiftly steal Then our wedding bells will peal You can go as far as you like with me In my merry Oldsmobile. They love to "spark" in the dark old park As they go flying along She says she knows why the motor goes The "sparker" is awfully strong Each day they "spoon" to the engine's tune Their honeymoon will happen soon He'll win Lucille with his Oldsmobile And then he'll fondly croon... Come away with me, Lucille In my merry Oldsmobile Down the road of life we'll fly Automobubbling, you and I To the church we'll swiftly steal Then our wedding bells will peal You can go as far as you like with me In my merry Oldsmobile.

I was born in 1979 but I sure will admit that the music of yesterday is the best by far! These kids these days don't know what music is they don't have a clue. It's really odd to think that the cartoon to this song was banned in Europe back then. Thanks for the song!

CURTIS ROBERTS I’m in high school and I can’t stand what my peers are listening to! I don’t even call rap music, because it’s simply somebody talking fast with a random series of notes in the background. People my age don’t have a clue what good music is!

There's nothing like getting an early start in life at making sweeping generalizations about entire generations and learning to state our own temporary feelings as timeless facts. It wins friends and creates an abundance of happiness. Hooray!

Nice song, I remember hearing it when I was a child on old cartoon, never realized it as so ancient, and this is a very nice recording of the original version as a Waltz, then there came some of them as a Fox-Trot, like the famous version by Jean Goldkette. Lovely car horns on the recording.

Automo-bubbling: cars were often called bubbles back then because of the bubbling sound they made.

back2skooldaze Wooden horns produced better sound than the all-metal ones. The all-metal ones have more tinny sound and they produce sounds that are less pleasant to the ear.
