EPISODE 158
In this episode we install a lot of exciting and shiny new equipment into Tally Ho’s supersonic engine room. We also install the cockpit footwell, which encloses the engine room and also means we can actually sit in the cockpit! In other news, Zeal sands the deck, revealing the beautiful sharp seams between the Yellow Cedar and Teak deck planks.
Batten down the pod bay hatches, Hal.

Hi Leo, We had the identical heater on our Beneteau 50' which we lived aboard for 10 years. After spending two years in the Caribbean we headed for northern latitudes spending the next 8 years along the British Columbia coast. The heater worked terrifically. We also heated our water with it passing the water lines through our water heating tank which was also heated with shore power and engine coolant. We were never without hot water. In northern climes our boat suffered with condensation which you will not experience due to the wood hull and massive wood construction. There is absolutely no doubt that a wooden boat is the very best liveaboard solution in northern reaches. Just one note of caution on the heater. When you stock your spares ( impellers, filters etc.) be sure to get a spare circuit board from ITR for the heating control unit. If anything will go wrong with the heater it will probably be a burned out diode or circuit on that board. Having a spare board will save you a ton of time and work. ( something I wished I had done) And one last thing, which I have mentioned in the past but will once again underline, ......The convenience, safety and flexibility (not to mention enjoyment) of your cruising will be elevated to a higher level if you use a RIB as a tender. Get big tubes, Aluminium hull and a twenty horse Yamaha. One day somewhere in an anchorage you are going to remember this advice and wish you had taken it. Mark my words. Cheers .....Peter

I first got hooked on these videos about four years ago, when I chanced upon an episode in which Leo was working alone, wrestling huge components (the old windlass and enormous framing timbers, from memory) around. The task he’d set himself seemed almost impossible, but his spirit and determination shone through and I became a committed viewer, admiring all the boatbuilding knowledge ans skill of Leo and those who’ve worked with him along the way, but really more so for the quality of the human interactions. Leo’s ability to entrust critical tasks to others, on a project that he has invested so much of himself in, is humbling, and the project is clearly life-affirming for all those involved- the whistling heard off camera in this episode is a clue to the workplace atmosphere. There have clearly been personal challenges along the way, and the strain has shown at times, but those challenges seem to have been met with respect for others and a unwavering sense of purpose. The boat will be - already is - a triumph, but the lived experience seems to me to be an even greater achievement. Well done Leo and all who’ve worked with you!

The more videos I watch, the more I become convinced that a fulfilling life can be constructed around having the skills to work with wood or metal and cooperate with others to build a thing of beauty and practicality. The beauty and integrity of a boat or aeroplane come from the lines dictated by its function. Leo Goolden deserves all praise for excelling in many disparate skill sets to bring this venture to where it is today.

When you work with materials of any type, it is very fulfilling. When you complete something that you have been making, see it work, use it, or even sit or stand on it, you get a feeling of great satisfaction that almost no other activity can provide. Sometimes it can be very frustrating and disappointing along the way. That is because there are almost always setbacks and unforeseen challenges, even minor injuries, but that is all part of the journey to success.

Not possible for me to comprehend the extent or complexity of the various systems incorporated into Tally Ho. I can't speak for anyone else but everything, and I mean everything, is totally beyond my level of understanding - absolutely above and behond my level of skill. I thought I knew a bit about sailing vessels in general but Leo and his professonal crew have taken it to a significantly higher level - 'a space odyssey' indeed. Congratulations on an astonishing job well done! I'm sure many other viewers have the same feeling and admiration I do for Leo's achievements with Tally Ho. Look forward to seeing many more videos in the coming 2 years.

Just amazing work! That Engine Room is really an impressive place! And yes, I do believe that these days all the machinery you have in there is at least a "should have"! Deck planking and cockpit are, of course incredibly well made - and even for a landlocked watcher like me, the time starts when I can hardly wait to see Tally Ho touch the seawater!

It's interesting watching all the folks who do long voyages in plastic boats and then are glad to be in port so they can wash all the salt off the boat. Meanwhile you'll be out in a rainstorm with a saltwater hose to keep the deck salty. :)

I truly enjoy and look forward to each episode. The level of craftsmanship in the restoration of Tally Ho is beyond impressive! Over a lifetime of sailing, (I’m old), one thing I’ve learned, and relearned, over the years is that on the water, simplicity breeds pleasure. So I guess I wonder a little bit about the large number of complicated systems. It’s clear though, that much thought went into it.
