I’m on a mission to rebuild a 1910 English sailing yacht called Tally Ho. Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel - but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her. I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now rebuilding her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK.
Leo, what is your best guess as to the displacement of Tally Ho? I see various sources online say she is a 30 ton vessel, but I guess that is something to do with cargo or taxation, not her displacement.
I just read the pamphlet the Albert Strange Association put out. The original owner Charles Hellyer required she: "..cruise in comfort whilst indulging in deep-sea fishing’. This explains the barrel windlass forward of the mast and perhaps the unusually clear flush deck." That does it, best Sailboat ever designed. And I've watched the outro maybe 30 times just to see her floating. She just needs rod holders port and starboard, maybe just drill a hole through the cap rail on either side? :) and a 1/2 dozen Halco Lazer Pro 190's in Stripey or Gravel Rash.
Damn I followed you a long time - mainly the time when you were at darlenes house. I just got recommended your Launch-video and heard about darlene. Like she said - its amazing what a boat can do :-)
Hello Leo. Lovely to see Tally Ho sitting on her lines. Sterling work. I know you don't need advice, but please don't hurry to commission Tally Ho. Many of us have been watching Steve Denette build, launch and sail Arabella. Steve had personal reasons to rush the launch and, probably as a consequence of this, is having to do a lot of finishing and maintenance afloat that he would probably have preferred to do ashore. I know that you know this. Cheers from a wooden-dinghy sailor in the UK.
Fantastic effort, especially after seeing this fine boat been dragged across a reef in the Cook Islands and back into the ocean 56 years ago A very nerve wrecking experience at the time Best of luck
Congratulations! She Floats!!!! Wtih watching every episode I became more and more amazed by how absolutely stunning Tally Ho would be. Seeing her afloat is truly spectacular. Starting with a 110 year old wreck and ending up with this result is just ludicrous. After watching this project all these years it finally happened, she's in water! I've watched every episode and I never even cared about boats, yet this project has mesmirised me and I now truly appreciate boats and their beauty. Thank you for taking us along this amazing journey! I'm truly astonished by all of your skill and craftmanship, you have an amazing team!! P.S Please come to SAIL Amsterdam 2025 so me and many landlubbers like me get the chance of seeing her in all her glory, I'm sure she will be a real showstopper!! P.P.S sorry for all the exclamation marks but I simply can't help myself, I'm just so excited!!!!
I know this is an older video, but it made me curious - presumably, Tally Ho might find herself in the tropics some day - in addition to the heating, is it feasible to put air conditioning into a boat of this size? I imagine the power draw would be sunstantial, but there’s been a lot of talk about how much power the boat can create and store. As someone who runs hot and prefers cooler indoor temps, I’d have a hard time with sleeping in a muggy 90 degree boat!
Muchas Gracias Muchachos por su talento y por darnos esto tan bello de ver cómo se construye un barco. Qué afortunados somos! Gracias. Mil Bendiciones para el TALLY HO ❤❤❤ Muy hermoso Barco, Felicidades.
Been watching since the beginning. That shot at @29:08 is breathtaking as are the following after. Congrats Leo and to the crew and hands that built her! Godspeed.
Hi, nice the boat is floating. Congratulation. Did you notice the dedicated Tally Ho Song? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VbyF5gHkf8g.html
