Nice video. A few suggestions. As a general rule slide the barrel bushing over the barrel first then seat the bushing in the slide before allowing the barrel to locking to the bushing. Doing it with the barrel already installed wears that precision .001 slip fit. Stop short next time with the lug cutter. Just before the safety seats into the slide recess. This way as you finish polish the feet it will not advance the slide rearward further creating a gap that frankly may wear in so with use and grow a thou more. A way to check that barrel foot radius after using the cutter is to install the link into the barrel and add the release pin and try to swing it thru its range of motion. It show smoothly ride that foot radius not bind anywhere. That will get you to the minimum. As if the link can not rotate thru it will not cycle and bind instead. Then you can check with it installed on the slide (yes with the bushing installed... we all miss stuff especially trying to film too). Have the foot all dykem coated and clear the high spots. Technically ideally if you had the slide stop pin installed and it was spinning you would feel not bind and the pin would evenly clean the dykem off the radius. That would be a true 0 tolerance fit. Takes serious patience polishing and testing over and over. If you are doing any kind of cerkote or dlc coating do not get it that tight as the combine parts layers can add up to 5 tenths (0.0005) and might bind if you got it that tight. I like every mating surface part to have a high polish in the direction of movement. Keeps everything to the lowest friction for butter smooth cycling, The feet, link pin and pin hole, slide pinnstop shaft. I like my bush to fit snug in the frame where you have to use a bit of force to spin it out. That still is a slip fit but ensures undetectable movement. I prefer the bushing to fit where it just stops binding the barrel. Just were it stops springing. Polishing gets you there at the end that last 5 tenths. If the slide has any vertical play when you are checking that radius link fit you want to pull up on the frame as otherwise it will allow increased tolerance between barrel and slide lugs. Also did not see the hood fitting but be sure to check firing pin centering but do not allow it to be the ultimate spec. A bit off center but perfectly fitted hood and top lugs is the most critical. 9bviously it can not be off significantly but a tiny bit is no big deal.

Excellent video, I'll never attempt this process but it gave me valuable insights on exactly how lock up works . Thank you for taking the time to show us.

The Lug mill makes sense. The other tools are easily made from either head wood or nylon. Thanks for taking the time to make this video 😁 More people should consider it.

Jay, much better barrel fit on this vid than the other one you did. Still, you should have the bottom lug fit a little tighter to where it requires a little bit of assistance to gain lock up. 20 + rounds break in before it starts to cycle with no problems. One knot holes at 50 yrds is the goal.

Your hand motion cutting looks very good, the surface after cutting looks like a milling machine cut, very smooth and clean cut!

you need the bushing installed to finish the lug fitting. An old or factory one not the one you precision fit. Do you have any of the print manuals? IMO that is a MUST HAVE. ETA: Sorry I jumped the gun I just hated to see you over cut and change the angles on the lugs I posted before watching the rest of the video. I see you already figured that out. I should have finished the video. You are learning and thats good. Next time it would save you some money to start with cheaper gunsmith fit barrels than the top of the line Barsto. Those mistakes can be more costly. Honestly just start with an RIA/Fusion even a Ruger1911 and pay a small fee for a local precision tig welder to weld up the rails so you can fit the slide. You could even have him weld the lug and hood on the stock barrel. Add a match bushing to fit. Build and fit that. Once you have it down then order you Caspian frame and slide (or a Colt 70 GI). Get it with whatever extras you want flat top lines checkering etc. I will say I think its good to hand checker a couple ties just so you understand it and are then able to repair checking better. Honestly even mill checkering is a PITA to setup the jig and you need a good not hobby mill to do it. Hand checking teaches patience and mental endurance attention to detail etc. There is also way more pride when you finish a perfect job. Trust me. You should be applauded for doing this documentary of your progress thru 1911 pistol smithing. Stay with it you are improving very nicely. Just more patience writing numbers down and pausing to think and contemplation of choices before removing more metal. The guys over on 1991forum gunsmith section would be happy to offer and help you with questions and tips especial as you have video to show where you are at. A number of very prominent smiths on there that are willing to still offer knowledge.

You made a perfect machined surface, but then you finished with a hand held Dremel tool. I'm pretty sure those surfaces have to be parallel and square to each other.

Wow 45 thou of lug engagement is a lot from what I have seen. Nice job if its not to tight. Really awesome video for us new guys Thanks. I have seen that the lower feet should have a very small angle up into final lock position just a degree or 2 as well some gunsmiths say. Excellent job explaining the process.
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 3 года назад
I still consider myself a new guy! I agree about the small angle on the lower lugs, so as the barrel gets pushed forward, the upper lugs are engaging more and more. I'm glad you found the video useful!

during my 1911 build i noticed that when the barrel bushing is not installed the barrel had a hard time getting pushed up into the lugs. its easier to see how they will engage with the slide by holding the frame and slide upside down. this lets gravity pull the barrel into battery.
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 7 лет назад
Yeah. I was thinking I'd measure the lug engagement again, but this time with the bushing installed. :) Might get even more engagement. Thanks for the comments.

My barrel is getting hung up a little on the front edge of the ejector port while pulling the slide back. There doesn't seem to be consistent downward motion of the barrel when transitioning out of battery. If I keep the firearm perfectly level then it works better, but as soon as I turn the frame to the side at all it hangs up. Just wondering what surfaces need adjusting to make the barrel move downward before the slide comes into contact with the hood. Any advice or pointers would be appreciated.

Good afternoon I have a super homelite 2 automatic oiling and when I put it to work begins to pour oil through the exhaust and put a lot of smoke, another one and the oil does not go out, what will it be? I appreciate your help because I do not speak English much THANK YOU
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 7 лет назад
I think that when you get the oil in the exhaust, it's because the tubes are hooked up backwards, so the other way is probably correct. I would just try and make sure the oil passages are not plugged up.

At 27:00 you do the lug engagement measuring all wrong, to get the correct reading, you need to put something between the breech face and the hood (about .1" thick), push the slide forward and do the second measuring, and you need to have the bushing installed while doing that

I think Jay you need to learn to use a Dremel properly. You are not keeping the Dremel cratex polishing stone parallel to the 2 lugs you are polishing . Therefore the lugs surfaces will not have full contact with the pin. Also you you should have stopped a little earlier with the lug cutter and finished with a round stone by hand to eliminate the excess clearance in the safety.
