practice makes perfect !!! I'm a retired national match gun smith for DoD.I've built and rebuilt 1911's - m1's-m14's for over 30 years .I used gallons of lapping compound (non embedding lapping compound ) thousand of sheets of sand paper and files and big hammers . I use files to get close then sand the rough spots the corners where the cutting tools leave burrs then I use lapping compound and the big hammer are my work bench to knock it on then off . Look for high spots go again watch for chips (filings are other debris ) that will make the slide gall up use thousand grit lapping compound and oil . once the slide goes all the back remove the compound and replace with oil . If the slide is still rough thin the compound with oil and work it back are fourth till smooth . There are lots of books on 1911's get all you can and read .

@am1911nut I was quite fond of the 1911a1's I carried decades ago in the MEU and elswhere. Ours were re-worked at PWS in Quantico, from original US GOVERNMENT stockpiles. It was a great firearm to shoot, I cant shoot the Glock anywhere nears as well...that trigger is/was a world of difference. Thanks for your advice and your service in keeping these war horses combat efficient.

Before test fitting the slide use a black marker and cover the slides on frame. Then test fit slide and the areas where the maker is rubbed off are your areas where material needs to be removed. This is the technique I used along with quality files and stones. I also did lap at the end once the slide was able to go on snug but only went back and forth a few times. I now have a tight and hand fit 1911.

I actually didn't really use the measurements other than knowing that I'd need to take a bit more off the rear, and so used a bit more pressure on the rear. The galling on my first build was caused by pounding the slide onto the frame. This time, I just tried to get the fit really close with the sandpaper so I wouldn't need to do any pounding.

Ak's and Gl9vks have taught us: if it doesn't rattle, it isn't reliable. I see so many people talk about "tight tolerances" on 1911's. For a match gun, sure. For a carry gun? F*** no! I'm pretty sure John Browning was a bit smarter than most of the gunsmiths I have talked to about 1911's. Slight rattle= loose tolerance= can handle some dirt. On my third 1911builders build. Their rail cutting jig can be fitted with cutters one/thou wider than standard. I polish the rails on the frame after I deck it to 5k grit, then I fit the primary and replacement slide to the frame. Since I cut all my frame rails to same dimensions, the slides of the govt's are interchangeable. I have never pounded a slide onto a frame, either 1911 or polymer80 builds. Fit them properly, or just buy completed guns.
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 4 года назад
Yeah, I'm embarrassed about the slide pounding. Live and learn. I've heard the same thing you said about a loose fit being more reliable. Truthfully, I just don't have enough experience to state one way or the other. Thanks for your comments.

The phantom jig, small amount of sanding and hand lapping has always been the best approach for me. The $50 slide file from Brownells is ridiculous. There are many ways to get to the final results. I use a rubber mallet to help persuade the slide to move across the frame. Lapping is where I see the best results. I used valve lapping compound.
@ogsniper743
@ogsniper743 3 года назад
Phantom jig is meant for aluminum frames this is steel.
@actionjksn
@actionjksn Год назад
@@ogsniper743 Yes I know this is two years old but I just used the Phantom jig to cut the rails on a steel frame 80% 1911 and the company I bought everything from even says that it's difficult but you can do a steel frame with it. I did buy an extra cutter for the rail cutting part of The jig. I cut one rail and part of the second one before switching to the new cutter. I will say this, it was extremely difficult and it took a long time, you have to go really slow making several adjustments just to reach one notch on the gauge.
@Mr45shooter
@Mr45shooter 10 лет назад
when test fitting you need to clean and oil frame and slide. the compound takes up space thats where you get your loose fit. alot of gun smiths don't use lapping compound just stones and file to fit.

Check out this video on youtube: How Less Baer 1911s are made. Its interesting how they really bang on the slide to get in on the frame. The brute force they use in a couple of places is pretty interesting when it comes to lockup. Can't wait to see how your 1911s shoot at the end.

Auto.It shows in pics and detailed I destructions how to fit every part of the pistol.Everglades ammo sells a jig,75 bucks for stoning the sides of the frame rails with a stone and it keeps it square.To deck it just use emory cloth taped to a piece of glass,its flat and take a few thousandths off the top of the frame.

good on the moving ahead on the new one. i really liked the first set of videos you did. i really wanted to make a point with you about using a caliper to try and measure anything to less than .001" (heck in most scenarios .002" !" as even though you have a good set of calipers they are really only good to .001" . why they ever put that hanging .0005" on there ill never know. it really only misleads folks into trouble.if you want to measure .0005" then you need a instrument with at least twice that resolution and preferably 4 times resolution. another thing ive noticed is that you really need to use you vice more it helps to keep things square when working with your files. looking forward to more vids on the new piece!!

@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 9 лет назад
Great, Paul! Glad you're thinking about building your own. First, I would simply go to Brownell's website and look at all their parts. The parts you have to fit (sometimes called "gunsmith fit") will require more tools, so I would go with drop in parts. That won't require as many tools. You'll definitely want to do a trigger job. All you need for that is a few stones and the jig, which I think isn't more than $40. A word of caution, though. Don't buy parts that are junk. That will cause you more grief. Not worth saving the money. Definitely go to some of the online forums to get more advice and suggestions for parts. 1911forum is a good place to start. Lots of really smart people there. forums.1911forum.com/ Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Consider scraping the top of the frame (.103 dim.) just as you might the tramway for a mill.
@nobearsyet
@nobearsyet 10 лет назад
You waited just a tad too long to break out the lapping compound. Usually when I do them (and I prefer to do them without a mill) I'll get the slide to go about 1/3 of the way in front and back with a similar method, then coat the rails in dykem or sharpie and tap on the end of the slide front and back with a rubber mallet (you don't have to beat on it, a few light taps will do) and see where I'm at. Then lap away a little at a time.

If you have a shop that makes Granite counter tops near by, they have scrap pieces that they toss out. I have several pieces I use for polishing flat surfaces. Counting the strokes is good, but measure, measure, measure! One part might clear, but the other will prevent installation so you keep going and take off too much. Make the sandpaper thicker with tape. My Citadel slide sounds tighter.

out of curiousity why wouldn't you just use an Arkansas stone or India stone? Thats what we use at the shop. Or on some instances a ceramic stone. Depends on firearm and what I need to do of course. No harassment here, just asking. BTW; Caspian frames are the way to go if you want your own custom build. Good choice. Brownells always seems to be back ordered on them.

@jimmel196
@jimmel196 9 лет назад
Hello Jay. You should definitely stay away from the lapping compound. When using it on slide to frame fits it tends to leave you with a less than near "0" tolerance fit. You had a really good start, even though I am not a fan of sand paper but as soon as you started lapping you lost your tight fit. The absolute best method is a surface grinder but if you are hand fitting I would stick to lightly filing and stoning.

Hello Jay Williams. I'm inspire watching your videos, But I'm not going to build my 1911 at this time just on what I see on posted video's. But I decide to start with something more simple for start, like ((customizing)) my old Colt Gold Cup Trophy. I ordered parts from Ed Brown for what I need to do: like mag-well and extended mag release and what call (perfection sear) what is little more expensive than standard one. But I hope is worth the extra money . Some other parts on the way. I try to make my trigger lighter from 3 lb 12 oz to 2 lb 12 oz. And if my project turn to be good then perhaps I will think to build one. Unfortunately all this specialized tools for precision work are little expensive. So if you added all building 1911 will not be cheep :(

Hey Jay might it be easier to just buy a "drop in" parts for "some" components that maybe crucial to guns operation?
@jayphilipwilliams
@jayphilipwilliams 9 лет назад
It's just a continuum, Mitch. If what you want is ultimate "easiness," then just buy a gun. At the opposite end of the spectrum, if you want to try it all yourself (that was me, in this case), then fit everything. Your point is a good one, and that is simply that if someone is concerned about a tricky part of the build or doesn't want to tackle something in particular, then just buy a drop in part. I actually mentioned that in other comments sometime back. For example, you could buy a frame, beaver tail, and barrel that will all "drop in" and then just assemble everything yourself, doing a basic trigger job, and you'll have your own build, done quite easily. So, yes. :)

I like your idea with the glass table. Because we used to lap flat surfaces on glass. But why didn´t you glue the sandpaper on the glass table with super glue or something? Because when you just put it on table it will take more material on the leading edge then in the middle and the following edge. And you could use water sandpaper. Beginning with 300 or 500 grit.

That's great work, do you still have this pistol? I recently did a steel frame 80% which means starting out with absolutely no rails on the frame with hand powered jig and cutters. Let me tell you that is a lot of work wow. Mine didn't end up as tight as yours but it's about like a mil spec Colt so I guess it should be pretty reliable. If anybody decides to try a steel frame 80% 1911 I recommend that you buy an extra cutter for the rails and take extremely tiny bites and be really patient with it. Also keep using lube and keep cleaning out the metal shavings. It can be done but it is difficult.

@@jayphilipwilliams Just be very patient if you do a steel frame 80% and take small bites with the adjustment knob. A second cutter for the jig is pretty cheap but you have to finish at least one side with the first cutter. I didn't have cutting oil but used 3 in 1 oil instead. If I do a second one it will be much better, there is a real learning curve. I was just happy not to ruin it. I can give you more detailed points if you ever try it.

is there a technique to fit the slide without sanding the frame? my thoughts are that slides are easier to get and replace than frames, therefore, I would rather work the slide to ft the frame, than the other way around

I don't believe so.

Good point. what if there is a variation with the slide rail on the inside of slide mating surface?

+Hsenag Acharya You need to purchase the two books by Jerry Kuhnhausen. They will have all the measurements you are looking for.

Im poor, I cant afford a colt 1911, what can I do to solve that?

I would recommend buying a used one online or at a local gun show. Then, it should be pretty easy for you to purchase new parts little by little and fix it up. I'd start with a hammer and sear and do a trigger job. Then, you could replace the barrel and bushing, beavertail, etc., as you can afford it. You could buy drop-in parts, or gunsmith fit if you're good with your hands. Here's a sample query of what you can get on gunbroker.com. Good luck! www.gunbroker.com/All/search?Keywords=1911%2045%20acp&MinPrice=200.00&MaxPrice=500.00&Condition=4&Sort=13&PageSize=24

Stick the sandpaper down next time. Don't use it loose like that

I'd but the slide already fitted to the frame. Leave to the pros.

One cool thing about building a 1911 is that you can do as much or as little as you'd like. You can go all the way from building it from a block of steel to merely assembling the parts.

That is way too loose. You should, at a minimum, use a stone for this. I didn't see your first build, but if this one was better, good job. Can't be perfect your first time, or even your second. Watch tons more videos of how to do it. You definitely want to sneak up on the clearances. One swipe at a time on the stone if need be. Don't force the slide on at all. Just work the top side on the rail first. And stop trying to slide the back of the slide onto the back of the rail. They're no going in the configuration of the gun. They don't need to fit them that way. That's another reason you have a sloppy slide. Just be patient. Fit the slide exactly how it's going to live.

Jay, please step away from the lapping compound! You cannot get a good fit using it, that's why custom guns cost so much-there is a ton of handwork involved. FWIW, unless the dimensions are just grossly off, a mill is almost never used, it's all files and stones. That said, it takes guts to risk ruining a frame and slide by doing it yourself and you don't learn unless you try-it's how the founding 'smiths developed the methods that we use now. FWIW, some of the slop can be removed by using frame bars and tightening up the side clearance.

So you just file and stone, and then you're done? In everything I've read, you use lapping compound. Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, the lapping compound definitely works, you just can't really control it like you can with hand filing/stoning. I learned from an old gunsmith who learned from Paul Liebenberg, Frank Pachmyr and the like, but I've still got a long way to go to reach their level of expertise. That said, I'm glad to see folks out there getting their hands dirty, experience is the best teacher, so my hat's off to you!
