A brief look at an uncommon 1915 Westinghouse 12" desk fan. It utilizes an universal motor, meaning it has carbon brushes and a commutator. They definitely need some attention as the fan doesn't sound too healthy when running. I'm guessing the worn brushes need to be replaced and re-seated. This fan is designed to run on 25Hz, a long abandoned frequency, so it runs slower on the 60Hz frequency used today in North America (I failed to make this connection while I was filming, hence the mention of it running slow and not knowing why). The original paint is in great shape and should shine up nicely. Thanks for watching!
Filmed in October 2021.
Specs:
100-115VAC 25Hz Current rating unknown
Universal motor (3 speeds controlled by resistance wire coil)
Year of manufacture: 1915
Made in USA by Westinghouse Electric
Model: 162620A

The invention & common use of induction motors on modern fans feels like an under appreciated thing. I won't survive a day even if someone paid me to live with a fan that makes rubbing sounds & weird smells. It's definitely a relic that needs to be preserved though, and I'm sure you'll do a great job at it!

Thanks! Very good point you made there. Back in the days of the first electric fans, I’m sure people had no problem dealing with the brushed motors lol! Most brushed motors can run fairly quietly once they’re tuned up. Hoping this one will quiet down too after I work on it. It currently has very worn brushes that aren’t seated correctly, hence the sparking and the noise.

Newer fans are brushless and older ones are brushed. What a cool fan!

Indeed! Most old fans were actually AC induction motors, the same "brushless" type motors used in today's fans.

A lovely antiquw fan from many years ago. I am loving the look of this. Would outlive any Chinese fan without any issue

Absolutely! If it’s already over 100 years old and still looking like this, I have no doubt that it’ll be around centuries later, provided that it stays in good hands. There’s something about Westinghouse fans that really make them stand out. Perhaps it’s the counterclockwise-rotating blades.

My grandparents have one in their laundry room just sitting on a high shelf with the black blades it never gets used though but it still works

Neat! Sounds like it’s one of the micarta bladed Westinghouse fans (or a painted metal blade). Perhaps you can acquire it someday and keep it as a family heirloom.

Very cool to see a universal motor version of this fan! I wonder if it was originally meant to run on DC?? Hopefully the construction of this one is a little different than the normal stamped steel westys because otherwise that headwire is going to be a lot of work to replace! I'm sure the commutator and brushes could use a good cleanup as well!
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
I’m wondering about that too! The tag does say it’s an alternating current motor and the stator appears to be laminated rather than being a solid core. I peeked through the motor vents and it appears to have a simple two-coil stator. The headwire appears to go through a gap in the stator and taps into the coils at the back, which is the side where the motor housing detaches. If that’s the case then I should be able to redo the headwire even if the stator doesn’t want to budge! I’m thinking it’ll be an interesting fan to work on since it’s my first universal motor fan.

I do as well! The blades are brass, but they certainly do look golden.

If the fan has brushes it maybe have to change because the brushes gets short after a long time making the fan turn slow. Also, I like the color of that blade 😮.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
The brushes definitely need to be swapped out. I checked their length and they’ve only got about 1/8” left! Also another reason why it’s running slow is that the motor is designed to run on 25Hz AC. Since it’s has an universal motor, it can run on 60Hz, but it runs slower. I like the blades too, especially because it runs counterclockwise, a Westinghouse staple! I agree about the colour. It’s got a nice golden hue.

I noticed there are flat head screws I seen on the motor cover so maybe you need a flat head screw driver to access the motor
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
Yep that would be the first step. The main thing I’m uncertain about is dealing with the wiring and pressing the stator out, knowing how tedious it is on stamped steel Westinghouse fans. I’ve been looking on the fan forum and it gave me some insight.

I meant I put a cloth on my super desk fan when I'm not using it to prevent dust from going into the motor cover

Did you check the cycles? This might be a 40 cycle model. If not I would try it with DC power.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan Год назад
Yep! It’s a 25 hz motor, which seems to be a common cycle on Canadian AC/DC fans from this era. If I run it on DC by rectifying AC, I’m thinking the 25 cycle requirement would be eliminated?

What is the main difference between a 25hz fan and a 60hz fan?

Yeah I think the brushes are also very worn out. They are not seating properly, but I have a new set that I’ll install when I service it.
