1931 GE 16” Franken-Fan | Before Restoration

With a quick glance, this might look like an ordinary 1920s GE loop-handle oscillator, but a closer look will reveal that something isn't quite right. The motor and base are fully stamped steel, manufactured in 1931... but with brass blades? This is a franken-fan that someone created, fitted with what I believe is an early-1910s Sprague fan blade set. It's in rough shape but it runs just fine. I'll have to do a more thorough clean-up and tuning when I have time. Thanks for watching!
Specs:
110VAC 60Hz Current rating unknown
Shaded-pole, 4-pole motor (3 speeds from speed coil)
Year of manufacture: 1931
Made in USA by General Electric Co.
Type AOU
Cat. No. 75425

That’s cool that it had blades from a company that would later merge. I think it looks good with the brass blades, the green and gold go well together. That would be nice to use brown twisted cloth wire and a antique style plug on.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
I agree! The green-gold combination always reminds me of those banker lamps, which I find quite pleasing to the eye. I also think that will suit the fan well. I’ll have to see if I have enough length of the brown twisted cord for the fan.

Nice fan! I love the GE loop oscillators. I'll hazard a guess that when it took the tumble that trashed the cage, the blade was bent beyond repair, thus the replacement. I agree with other comments that the brass blade looks good. For sure the set screw is incorrect. GE set screws have no head, just a slot. I have a restored 60559, which is the D.C. version of the 75423, the 12" cousin to your fan. Mine is a bit older, with a brass blade and badge and steel cage. It's always nice to see what other antique fan enthusiasts are doing.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan Месяц назад
Thank you! Your theory is very plausible. The tumble was probably responsible for the busted oscillator gearbox too, and the owner just cut off the exposed motor shaft rather than repairing the gearbox. That’s awesome, I haven’t seen many DC GEs. Can’t beat brass blades! I actually have a GE 75423 from 1924, which I really want to finish servicing since this year is its 100th birthday!

That is interesting. I don’t see many very old fans with their blades swapped with another. Still regardless of this blade set or the original, still one good looking fan
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
For sure! In a way, I kind of like this blade set more than the original. The painted aluminum blades look a tad bit boring compared to brass blades. I think it’ll look even nicer if I decide to mirror-polish the blades.

It's cool the way it is. That was made during the depression with most having not much to spend. Then came ww2 with a shortage of consumer goods and materials. Looks to me like someone handy did whatever it took to keep it going.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
Agreed! This fan is a big step down from the 1920s GE fans. There was a distinct absence of cast iron and brass in the 30s fans, in favour of steel, pot metal and aluminum. I’m definitely glad the past owner(s) put the time into keeping it going. Based on the condition, some people would have just discarded it.
@colin_5839

Damn that thing has had a rough life! Hopefully you can give it a new lease on life! Also that cord is almost certainty asbestos and while its not harmful to touch, its very harmful 20 to 40 years down the line after breathing it in a lot so I'd make sure to soak all the frayed parts with oil before removing it!
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
Will do! Good point about soaking it in oil; I’ll make note of that so I don’t forget when I restore the fan. I didn’t want to breathe in the stuff in case I unintentionally rubbed my nose after touching the cord, hence the reason why I wanted to wash my hands lol. I definitely plan on bringing some shine back to the fan! Probably will polish the blades, the exposed brass parts of the badge, and the paint.

I have the exact same fan. If you strip the paint off the blades, you will see they are brass
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 7 месяцев назад
The blades on my fan aren’t original. They would have been aluminum blades painted green from the factory. The current blades are solid brass, no paint. The dullness is just the patina.

I think you should weld the broken piece back together. The piece is made out of steel... So it should weld back together easy. Since that's how the grill was made

Why did fans fron the 1910s-20s use brass besides appreance? Weight reasons?
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan Месяц назад
I’m guessing it was both for appearance and easy of manufacturing, since brass is a softer metal. Weight certainly could’ve been a factor too. Having heavy steel blades would induce more stress on the motor and bearings.

These fan is really rare to collect, but how do you get these type of fans?🤔
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
Just about anywhere! Local sales, antique stores, buy/sell sites, and eBay. If you’re in the US, there are annual fan collector meets. There are plenty of good old fans for sale there, often at more reasonable prices than eBay.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
@Alexthefancollector Walker Yeah the prices on eBay are often ridiculous. It’s a shame that eBay has become such a platform. It used to be good back when sellers were using the site to simply sell items they didn’t need, rather than to make a massive profit. There are still good deals that pop up, but it’s far less frequent.
@TheSuperFanMan
@TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад
@Alexthefancollector Walker I saw that exact video as well. I know that’s the reality of flipping, but the nature of that video really annoyed me. I mean, if I was running a yard sale and someone was looking around with a phone in hand, checking the eBay prices of the items I was selling, I probably wouldn’t want to sell anything to them, knowing they’ll just resell the items at much higher prices.
