1918 Flu Pandemic Oral History - 100 Year Old Remembers

In 2007, on my great uncle's 100th birthday, I interviewed him for several hours. While we discussed many things over those hours, I've always remembered his story about surviving the 1918 flu pandemic. While times may have been different, hopefully hearing how he and his family practiced social distancing and quarantining - and survived - will be helpful now.
My great uncle passed away at 105 years old in 2013. An inspiration to all who knew him.

Notice that this gentleman says "of course, kids were the biggest carriers." That's another reason why sending kids back to their schools is so risky.

Count your blessings. The Black Death killed at least half of Europe. The Covid death rate is actually 1.5% IF you have a Vitamin D deficiency. For everyone else, it's less than 1%. Two thirds of the deaths were from nursing home residents, who are notoriously malnourished & immune compromised.

Thanks for sharing. When I was little we had many elderly neighbours, a few of whom would've lived through WWI and the epidemic. Wish I'd had the foresight to ask them about their recollections of those days as now there's no one with a living memory of those events. Ask your elders about the past as they can give you first hand insights into historical events.

Don't think he quite got your economic question there but the economy was FAR different and more a locally based economy with a lot more self sufficient people and not a great deal of stuff leaving the local area or coming in except for maybe flour and sugar and a few things like pepper and salt and candles. This guy was -2 in 1918 but he says he was in high school? 🤨 Love him, but he didn’t go thru the 1918 flu if he is 100 - being in high school even in 1920 would make him at least 115.

He was 100 in 2007. So he was born in 1907, so he would’ve been around 11 years old in 1918. And by 1920 around 13 so there’s nothing strange about that.

@@paulcollopy4043 You do realize that's how this spreads, right? People gathering and the virus passes from person to person? If churches want to host people and keep them inside for two weeks, fine, otherwise this keeps going and going and going, and more people get sick and die. Doesn't seem terribly smart to me... not sure who can live with that on their conscience.
