1929 Ford Model A Roadster- How come nobody wants it? 

Oh my gosh, Paul, that roadster is "Gertrude" !!! I sold "Gertrude" to Jim last year. "Gertrude" was in our family for 22 years. When I purchased the car, the only "upgrades" were the 6 volt alternator, oil filter, and the transistorized ignition. The engine and trans were rebuilt just before I purchased the car, and I immediately replaced the top with a LeBarron Bonnie assembly and all new tires. I also had the brakes upgraded with bonded linings and iron drums. The rear differential was also rebuilt by a club member who had a Model A repair shop in Costa Mesa. This car got me into the Orange County Model A club, and I really enjoyed driving this car; it never broke down the entire time we owned it. I am retired and now live in Redding, Ca. and I must say that we certainly miss Gertrude (Roady). I am so blessed that you and "Model T" own Gertrude; I have followed you on RU-vid for the past 2 years. You both are a tremendous resource for the Model A hobby; you and Model T are my heroes. I hope that one day I can meet you and Model T at some function. This video has really made my day...... thank you !!

The owner of Lebarron Bonnie was Lee Atherton. He and my Dad were friends through the Early Ford V8 club in New England. About 40 years ago, he gave us a tour of the upholstery factory in Amesbury, Massachusetts . It was amazing. In some cases he was getting his fabrics from the original suppliers in England using the original looms. That’s about as authentic as you can get. He was having his ash top bows shaped and steam bent by Amish craftsmen in Western Pennsylvania. The quality and attention to authenticity was most impressive. At that time he said if he didn’t have a pattern for your early Ford, he would do your car free of charge. That way he would have a pattern for the next time. I’m sure he is past now. Glad to the hear the company is still in business. Also many years ago, a friend had a 1909 Cadillac. The acetylene lamps had been manufactured by a coach builder in Amesbury. That building was the same building where Lebarron Bonnie was.

Beautiful car; we gotta realize that in almost 100 years some “mods, retrofits and customizations” should be expected. Some of the rust at the floor could be patched and the surface rust could be treated with rust converter and even paint. This one landed in the best hands possible. Congratulations Paul!

Back when I was in high school, 1954-58, I owned a 1931 Victoria.. Fun A bone. Wish I still had it.. It ended up in a museum out side Reno.

I hope to buy a model A. Your car is exactly the color and style of my grandparents first car. I have a model of it sitting in my desk, my grandfather made it 50 years ago to show me bits and pieces of their early life.

I really enjoy your channel, thank you for your time. I am 64.8 years old and holding, but despite having entered high school in 1971, I drove a 29 Model A Tudor to school my sophomore and junior years. Why not senior year? Because I found a 1928 Chevy National 4-door in a barn an hour wast of our home in Saginaw, MI. It had the original interior, no rust and ran great. I drove that car for two years as my only car. I currently have a 1926 Chevy roadster and a few other cars of more current times (1941), but the Model A was by far the most enjoyable car to drive (of those before 1930) because it was so dependable. I do believe it ranks as one of the best designed and manufactured cars, period. As an engineer, I recommend that all mechanical and manufacturing engineers disassemble and reassemble a Model A if they want to learn about great design and manufacturing techniques.

It's great to see you as a professional broadcaster to slip occasionally. I really enjoy your videos and the outtakes. Keep up the good work! I hope your weather straightens out also. We in Michigan are putting up with some strange stuff too.

My first car was this roadster.I had to repaiir/rebuild much but after several months it was finished. Nice little car.

Nice buy! I’ve always loved cars and trucks from the 20s and got mine after my TR6 shrunk and I needed a can opener to get of it.

One of my mother's sisters had a '28 A roadster in '32 (of which I have several pictures) and so that's what I originally was looking for. Never could find one for sale but now I'm pretty happy with my '30 coupe. You must have lots of funny outtakes.

Exciting! As a person who grew up in rural Massachusetts a roadster is the coolest thing still to this day to me. Can’t wait to see what you do to it, correct a few things and really make it yours. The paint color isn’t the worst, maybe just repaint the wheels black🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm going to have to follow this one! My wife won't let me start work on restoring her (yes, her) '29 Roadster until I retire in a few years. Your videos are invaluable to me as I prepare for that day.

My older brother gave me a 29 Roadster for a Christmas Present when i was 12 years old . I bought a $15 carburetor from J.C. Whitney and drove it for 6 years .... Great times .....

My favorite car of yours is the 4 door sedan and I have been looking for one to to restore with my friend to drive to high-school in 3 years with my 46' John Deere A. I just sold the 1929 pick-up truck I restored in 1983. It was heartbreaking to see her go but our retirement home in AZ had no room in the garage for it and it went as part of our downsizing. Mine was restored completely stock and fun to drive, but it was needing some additional work after using it for 39 years. I know my Jeep Cherokee will not likely be on the road after 94 years and it was a pleasure to have been custodian of the Model A for the few decades that I owned her. She went to good home with a fellow who owned a Roadster and was looking for a pick-up to carry things in.

Paul, I can't think of what use you're planning on, but yes go for it.

I have never had one of the older Fords but the simplicity of these cars is their selling point. No windows, manual top, and power steering by armstrong. What's not to like. Unlike today, or even older muscle cars, there are no complicated electronics. I know a guy who has one and he added a more medern 3 speed and a remote water squirter, to squirt onlookers with a cooling burst of water, a real attention getter. I look forward to your series (new subscriber)..

My dad drove one till he passed in 1959, identical except for color, his was black..somewhere along the line he had a pickup box installed that had the Ford logo on the tailgate , have never seen another like it.

I have a 1930 roadster pickup that locals love to drive in weddings. Except getting the white dress in and out it is a hit. I keep the roof down 90% of the time that I drive daily 8 months of the year in Maine. Even to the dump.

Nice roadster! I had a 1931 roadster and a 1929 roadster pickup and loved the open air. I think now I like close cars because you get wet less when it rains😂😂 Now I know why you needed Stella out of the garage by April or May. Too bad the weather is not cooperating 😢

Hi Paul. Waau just loved this. My first car was a 1930 Chevrolet. Bought it in 70's and had so much fun. It was immaculate and I drove so many bridesmaids to their weddings despite never even having a girlfriend! (My dad said I was crazy. I said I know, tough luck). Best choice I ever maid, to fell in love with cars. Don't get me wrong, girls are not too bad. Unfortunately they are required in order to have kids. Luckily today my boys are sharing my passion for cars. I constructed a full scale-half section model T-show cabinet for theri toy collection. Love, from deep dark Africa.

Kool car, even if the floors do need fixing. Most convertibles/roadsters do need floor fixes if they are not brand new. One thing I noticed though, it looks like you have the red/maroon steering wheel, which, I thought, was an early 28 only item. Great that air and oil filters have been added. Nothing wrong with helping an engine last longer.

The color is different, but that's what makes it unique. Making As great again is my favorite thing on the weekends to watch from all your videos paul. Luckily it's not an earl shive paint job. Not sure if they were in California. Paint everything not taped by the customer. That's what I would love is a model a convertible. Since I'm in michigan a huge michigan wolverines fan I would like a navy blue with yellow color combo. Calling it Go Blue. Anyways. I look forward to your progress on the new A. Sad to say paul I have a 3mm stone left mid ureter and another stone lower right ureter at the same time. But hope I get lucky like you an pass them. Hate the procedures. Sweet car, i can't wait to see more of it!

My brother has always loved old Fords. Had several, most recently a 31 A Model and a 27 T. He worked on that 31 for years and we drove it a lot. One day when my 66 Mustang failed to start I drove it to work. He sold the 31 a couple of years ago, just tired of working on it and his age preventing really enjoying it. But he had stripped it down to chassis and rebuilt everything on it. He didn't get a lot when he sold it but the buyer was happy. These old Fords are not worth what a lot of people think. There are just so many of them around still.

Nice looking car. Especially the foldable top is something I would like to have on my 1929 Roadster Pickup. I am a bit surprised why you want to replace the Tillotson by a (original) Zenith. My Roadster Picktup is equipped with a Tillotson and after restoring the carburator I am very happy with it. The car is an excellent starter and a great runner and I had no problems caused by the Tillotson in the past 4 years. Even on our 5000 km tour from Germany to Norway last year the carburator worked well all the time. Give it a try!

These old beauties are in good hands with you. I always get a kick out of learning about them. I don't have the means to own one myself, so I appreciate you sharing you knowledge and enthusiasm with us.

Good morning Paul, very nice looking roadster. All the shocks are off my 31 Victoria now and I’m going to put tube one on. Had rebuilds on 2 years ago and 3 have leaked since. It’s not a points car, it’s a driver so I’m going with the tube one. When you take the tube shocks off Roadie are you going to sell them? If so put me on your list for them please. I know you like everything original, Gotta believe the air shocks are history. The 28/29 models weren't as advanced as the 30/31. With this transmission, can you add the Mitchell overdrive or would you really want to. Excited for you and Tina to enjoy this project as do I following your upcoming videos. Do you enough room in your garage for all these? Congratulations!

My grandfather had a '29 Model "A" Roadster. He bought it NEW! (He was 21 then). My first and ONLY new car was a 1992 Buick LeSabre (Fancy, I know, right?) But Hell, I was 30! 😊

Great looking "A"!

My Grandfather operated a Gilmore gas station in the 20s-30s (Long before my time-born in the 50s). When he passed away in the early 80s the original gas station signs and pumps were sill in place and he had brand new in the box model A & T parts on the shelf in the office! I have framed photos of Mr. Gilmore and the lion and pictures of the clowns on my wall.

Interesting new Model A for you , Paul. Thought you may have something new planned as your other cars have been extensively covered. Actually, Ford Australia sold new Model As similar in look to your roadster [ brown fenders, bright body colours] called Sports models.Will miss seeing your Tudor ; the '29 Fordor is my favourite. I have 2 Model As, a Tudor 1929 & late '30/early '31 Fordor. Cheers from NZ DownUnder -Wayne.

I'm pretty new to the channel, so I have more binge watching to do. This is a really informative channel, and lots of fun. I dont know why anyone would NOT want to jump at a chance to own this cool roadster. If they are purists, there doesnt seem to be anything on this car that couldn't be changed back to a more authentic appearance. It's not too big a deal to repaint the fenders black. I like the warm tan colors. They match the nice temperate weather you have, which is great for top-down driving. Looking forward to the videos.

great looking car. why did they discontinue the fan hood? wasn't it necessary enough for cooling? A funny thing I find about the early A"s is that the engine cover is not tangent with the rest of the body. Why funny? cause the late model T"s did have that more or less as a continuous form. It is as if the kinda went backward with the design
