Merlin engine is the best sounding internal combustion engine ever produced for my taste. I just could listen to it for days.
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 9 лет назад
Some interesting points about this engine. Rolls Royce built big to go racing, along with SuperMarine in the '30s, to try and win the Schnieder Trophy. The racing engine was developed into a production engine, the Merlin. The Merlin was built to be supercharged, at quite high levels of boost. At the beginning of WW2 they made about a thousand hp. By the end, they made well over two thousand. The Merlin had double overhead cams and 4 valves. The cams were driven by shafts. There was no drive chain in the motor, nor chain of gears. The exhaust valves got hot and burned out, so they tried making them hollow and filling the shaft with sodium. That made the valve guides very hot, so they wore out very quickly. Production Merlins featured screw-in valve guides, because they'd have to be changed quite often. Water injection, water + methanol injection, and nitrous oxide were all used on this engine, in combat. After the war, some of these ideas found their way into car and bike engines for drag racing and similar, but the original 'fully worked' engine in the world, straight out of the factory, was the Merlin. Oh, and the constant velocity carb we all had on our bikes in the '80s? Came from the SU car carby, which in turn came from the constant velocity carb used on the Merlin. An awful lot of 'go fast' stuff, showed up first on this engine.
@threepot

I think they took the Merlins up to about 1750HP. The Griffon was I think 35ltr..2300HP.

I've been watching some (30-40) of Jay's broadcasts for the last six months, with much joy, especially the ones about Packards. (My father had one 1938 stright six, when I was a kid, and my neighbor is chairman of the Finnish Packard Association and has a lot of them, that I'm drooling around from time to time) and I never really had reason to make a comment before. I do prefer the oldies, and can take some modifications with a smile, when reasonable to make them possible to drive in modern traffic. I can swallow a Rolls with a Merlin engine, even a Bentley with one, and some other gadgets, but now you've crossed a line! You simply can't put an automatic transmission into a 1930 Bentley! That's just sacrilege! And the wheezing sound of the car; well, I say like Nanny in Gone with the wind: "It aint fitt'n!"

LMacNeill And remember that when Rolls-Royce couldn't supply the war demand with hand built Merlins, Packard in Detroit stepped in, re-worked the british left handed blueprints to American right handed prints; changed all the Whitworth nuts and bolts to SAE, and turned out 75,000 mass produced Merlins that really helped win the war in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster bomber, and our Mustang. I have driven 3 Packards; a 53, 49, and 47. All great smooth straight 8 engines, very understressed. Especially the huge one in the 47 Custom Super Clipper. Biggest horsepower available in America that year-165. The crank had 9 main bearings, etc.
@barrierodliffe4155
@barrierodliffe4155 6 лет назад
When Rolls Royce and Ford of britain had already changed the Merlin for mass production, Packard got the modified engine and Rolls Royce made more of them than the 55,000 total that Packard put together. Rolls Royce not only made more of them, they did all the design and development and made all the Griffon engines and they made jet engines, Packard was small time. The Rolls Royce Merlin assembled by Packard went into a minority of the planes you mention. Real Rolls Royce engines went into more of them and many other planes too. 165 hp in 1947 sounds rather pathetic for such a big engine, no wonder American cars were so slow then, just as well they had brakes that hardly worked and they could not go round corners.

This can be YOURS for a trifling $800K. As The Daily Mail explains, "the car was hand-built by Bob Petersen Engineering. The chassis comes from a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, while the coachwork was designed to give the feel of a pre-war Bentley. Since the Merlin V-12 is a thirsty beast, delivering just three mpg, the Meteor is fitted with a 400-liter (105 gallon) fuel tank.... Its capable of 160mph." I want to imaging some Tuner in his rice cooker on the interstate having this monster loom up behind him and then being blasted by at speed by this visage of some Edwardian steampunk nightmare, then pulling his car over and with tears, walking away from his now emasculated cooker.

Technically it's a Meteor engine which was designed for use in tanks so it's a substantially de-tuned, naturally aspirated Merlin. Only disappointing thing about this car, and indeed all Meteor-engined vehicles is they don't sound very exciting - all you hear is whine of the timing gears and the transmission.

It's a 27 litre engine. 27 litres is 7 u.s gallons. It was initially used in WWII era British tanks. One of the later ones being the Centurion Tank. You can probably imagine that it uses a lot of fuel.

the engineering and attention to detail on cars like this is incredible. a modern production car is made purely for the sake of profit, with no love, or real craftsmanship. new cars average what 20- $30,000, and you are lucky if they are worth ten percent of that in ten years time. If I am going to spend that kind of money on a car, I expect a kind of quality that just isn't available with modern production. When the only goal that a company has is profit, the products are inferior, the materials are inferior, and there is little or no quality in production. This world needs more craftsman, tinkerers, artists, and dreamers, and less...

if your vehicles lose 90% of their value in 10 years, you need to quit buying kias or daewoos. I bought a new Ford Ranger in 2004 for $16K. it has a little less than 100K miles on it. I could probably sell it to a dozen people tomorrow for $6K.

Bunka Fas Nope, top gear was reformed in 2002 into what it is today. Infact James May wasn't even around in Series 1 because he was lost and claimed there were 2 albert halls. Yes, top gear as a show is old but it was nothing like it was now before 2002.

If it was a blown Merlin, it would make 1200 up to 1800 hp. Definitely a Meteor tank engine application. It is a Merlin in size and the block, but not in application

1,647 cubic inches! I guess this car is the exclamation point on the statement, "there's no replacement for displacement "!! Thanks for sharing this piece of history! The P51 was an amazing aircraft. My father had a friend back in the early 70s that had a P51, the "Miss Coronado" and he would fly airshows where he would go in to a dive at full throttle pull up about 75 feet above the crowd, like he was doing a strafing run! The sound that Merlin made that low at 400 mph was something you'll never forget!

Is the motor a Rolls Royce Merlin or a Packard Merlin? I'm assuming its a Rolls Royce version because its put in a British car. You wonder how hard it is a to get a Merlin engine though.
@cheyennedogsoldiers
@cheyennedogsoldiers 10 лет назад
Its probably a RR version given that the car was Built in the UK, and yes you can still find them for sale. I've seen them as cheap as $2400 however usually at this price needing a rebuild. They were built in large numbers because although most commonly associated with the Spitfire and the P51 Mustang these engines were actually used in a lot of other aircraft. Mostly bombers such as the Lancaster however, after the war could also be found in a number of commercial aircraft;, I think they were produced up until the 1050's. There's also a version which could be found in various tanks and other military vehicles although they were not called Merlin's, I've forgotten their name but they are often miss identified as Merlin's although had several defences including 2 rather than 4 valve per cylinder, no supercharger, different carbs etc.
@TheAegisClaw
@TheAegisClaw 10 лет назад
cheyennedogsoldiers The tank version was called the Meteor, initially used in the Cromwell medium tank.
@A3roboy

TheAegisClaw No, the unsupercharged version was called the Meteor. It was fitted to planes as well.
@A3roboy
@A3roboy 10 лет назад
Neither. As it doesn't have a supercharger, it's a Meteor.
@cheyennedogsoldiers
@cheyennedogsoldiers 10 лет назад
Thanks TheAegisClaw I had a complete brain fart and could not remember the name. LOL! A3roboy, Not necessarily, without checking block numbers there's no way to tell the origins because don't forget, the Merlin version was deigned to operate on AvGas not conventional pump gas. Therefore these engines see significant modifications to allow them to operate on modern gasoline which often entails removing the superchager.
