The RCA Victor complex in Hollywood was comprised of executive offices, a recording studio, a pressing plant, and a shipping dock all of which extended from Sycamore Ave on the west, to Orange Drive on the east. The arched entrance had a dog and horn in bas-relief at the top of the arch -- barely visible in this photo. At the top of the big hill to the left of the building was the famous "Hollywoodland" real estate sign -- faintly visible here. The sign has now been restored and reconstructed to read only "Hollywood." Today, the two-story part of the complex has been demolished and is now a parking lot, but the rest remains and serves as an actor's workshop. Many years ago, the Orange Drive end of the building was converted into a picture frame shop that I used to frequent. One day I was standing in the showroom chatting with the owner of the frame shop and I asked him if he was aware that this building was once part of RCA. He laughed, and told me that when he was 18 years old, back in the 1940s, he got a job pressing records in exactly the spot where we were standing. He said the fumes from the molten shellac were so strong and sickening that he lasted only one week and had to quit. This nauseating job is not something we think about when are enjoying Bix Beiderbecke 78s. The West Coast, "Hollywood Sound" from this period is typified in the Jackie Taylor Orch. His 1930 sides were recorded in this building, and the two 1929 sides were recorded at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City. I have always believed this group of musicians was the core band for Leroy Shield's music soundtracks for comedy shorts made at Roach. The screechy brass with that sweet reed section is much too similar to deny -- the geography and logistics are more than a coincidence. "Tomorrow is Another Day" has a label credit to Ted Fiorito, yet, it sounds nothing like his Victor output. This recording is wedged in between the other Taylor sessions and sounds highly related to his group, so I have included it here for completeness. It is up for debate whether it is actually Taylor or Fiorito. It just seems odd that Fiorito could show up in LA with his band and overnight sound so "West Coast" for that one recording session. You can decide.

roybo1930 There is a Re-done version that I have of Hal Roach/Lil’ Rascals which is simply excellent! The group is called the Beau Hunks and I believe they are in the former Czechoslovakia, which would fit their name.

Not gonna lie - the bassoon after the vocal on 'Tomorrow Is Another Day' had me jump out of my seat for a second! Outside of Trumbauer and Rube Crozier on Paul Whiteman records (or Garvin Bushell with Fats Waller in the late '20s), that instrument doesn't show up on jazz and dance band records very often.

I find it amazing how far popular music has changed since 1930.To think the youth of 1930 bought these records compared to what their great grand children play in 2020.I had not known this band till now ,but it was fantastic and some of my favourite tunes here ,particularly "Highway to Heaven",and the brilliant "That's what I like about you"which was a different tune to the one i was expecting. Many thanks for doing this upload which I will be playing over and over for a few days.

According to Brian Rust's American Dance Band Discography 1917-42, Jackie Taylor and his Orch recorded 6 sides for Victor, 2 in Culver City,CA, Oct. 20,1929 and 4 in Hollywood on July 20,1930. Taylor was a violinist and apparently used 2 vlns as well as the usual 2t,trb; 3 reeds, p,bj-g;sb;d lineup of that era.

Billy White on "Tomorrow is Another Day" sounds a lot like Orlando Roberson. But is it? I wish there was more information on the internet about Roberson -- maybe his career took him to the West Coast in 1930? (I note no recordings by him in NYC between 1929 and 1931). Or are my ears playing tricks on me? There's also a similarity to Buster Dees on tunes #3 and #5. Anyway, kudos for this wonderful grouping.
