Length 7 minutes. Our third educational video is about how Grayson County government officials in Texas have worked tirelessly for 91 years to erase Black history. Interviewed here is Mrs. Barbara Bowie who is the North Texas Coordinator for the Mississippi Freedom Riders and Executive Director of the Dr. Jesse Bowie Scholarship Fund.
The Sherman Riot played a pivotal role in American Civil Rights history. Black attorney William Durham's law practice was burned down as was the County Courthouse. After the riot & lynching of George Hughes, Durham worked out of his home with another young black attorney named Thurgood Marshall to write and win SWEATT V. PAINTER which ended school segregation at the University of Texas Law School. By winning SWEATT, black students, and all other students of color, could now attend the UT Law School.
Durham and Marshall, would continue to fight for desegregation and later won the landmark BROWN V BOARD OF EDUCATION. Durham also won the DENT case against the Galveston School District, which forced school administrators to pay black teachers the same as white teachers.
Although the events of the 1930 Sherman Riot were violent and horrible, what came forth from the ashes changed America for the better. Improving the lives and living conditions of millions of Americans of color.
Grayson County Judge Bill Magers refuses to answer why he does not want this marker. Visit our website at shermanriot.org and read the Washington Post article washingtonpost.com/history/20.... Sign our petition at chng.it/9qtWkSSb
