The Texas State Historical Marker for the 1930 Sherman Riot & Lynching of George Hughes and Burning Down of the Courthouse and Black Business District is quite a story. The Marker completed all phases of it's application process in March of 2021.
But because the riot began on County Property, Grayson County Judge Bill Mayers, and all four County Commissions must now grant our request to formally put it on the Commissioners Court official business agenda, and then vote on it for approval. This riot was one of the largest of the 1930's, and from it's ashes came a wave of landmark new civil rights legislation that has affected every school student and every teacher in the United States, ever since.
So the positive outcomes that came forth after the riot, are bigger than the riot itself. But the Judge and Commissioners still want nothing to do with it, and have denied it's formal hearing ten times in a row, as of August 3, 2021. Their obfuscation is now getting more news than the riot marker itself, which is bad for branding and economic development. The Commissioners Court politicizing of history is generating a lot of bad press for the community, and it's beginning to anger local business people.
