Buzz is back with a new project! A handsome tombstone radio, Model 179, made by Crosley Radio Corp, in the year 1934. This radio was damaged in shipping, but the only goal Buzz has in today's video , is to get it to work. Is that a tall order?, or is Buzz up to the task. Watch and enjoy, as he goes through each step until it's time to give it "the juice"
To close out the video, Dickel introduces a 1968 8mm film, "High Noon" on Buzz Cinema. This stars brothers Bizz and Buzz playing multiple parts. This film is young Buzz's salute to the 1952 western, starring Gary Cooper. Enjoy.

Hi Buzz, this is my first posting to your RU-vid page. RU-vid's sorting algorithm first suggested one of your videos about 6 months ago. I must say, your unique radio restoration style gave me the initial impression that I wouldn't find anything technically useful, what with the off-beat humor, 1930's background music, obnoxious sound bites, troublesome gnome, and vintage 8mm shorts. After viewing more than a few minutes of some of your restores here and there, I discovered you really know what you are doing. Anyone that can rewind power transformers, field coils, and re-cone speakers ranks very highly in my book. I have been restoring antique radios for 50+ years and made a career of sevicing and designing the RF/analog portions of communication transceivers so, am not a new comer. In going through the schematic for the Crosley 179, I notice a few things that caught my eye. It is using the first generation of tubes that are indirectly heated. The 2.5 volt filament (6.75 amps) was used in the early 1920's tubes, so was likely a holdover from then (Ah, tradition!). I think that low voltage was used orginally because the early tubes used a standard tungsten filament from a light bulb, and they needed to be run at a high temperature to generate a sufficient electron cloud. The lower filament voltage made use of a thicker filament, thus longer filament life. This radio actually has AGC! Very advanced for 1934! There must be a mistake in the schematic but, I noticed resistors 63, 68, and 69 (which forms a voltage divider to bias the detector output) is dissipating 40 watts! The second tube in the radio is being used as a mixer/local oscillator. The oscillator portion of the circuit is using the suppressor grid as the oscillator input and plate as the output. I have never seen this done before. There isn't gain available using this configuration plus, the RF input signal will FM (Frequency Modulate) the oscillator when strong signals are present. At first glance in the start of your video, the radio appeared to have taken a hay-maker in the speaker lattice but, seeing the rest of the radio, it actually doesn't look too bad. Those speaker lattices are usually thin plywood with veneer, which often comes apart over time. Using your "bag of tricks", I know you will come up with an adequate fix. Don't feel bad about the capacitor mis-wiring, it happens to all of us sooner or later. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
@Buzz1151
@Buzz1151 Год назад
Hi Bill...When I first started restoring these radios years ago on RU-vid, I noticed almost everybody that were doing repair videos, their videos were dry, and a bit boring, with no humor. So, that's why I always listed my videos as comedy, and tried to make them with a little humor, because people need to have a good laugh and be entertained after coming home after a hard days work, and relax have have a beer. I know my style isn't everybody's cup of tea, but I make them so I can watch them, and still be entertained. I never intended or wanted to attract subscriptions to make money off my restore videos. My videos are not monetized, and I make nothing on them. I just wanted to make videos that were fun. So, that's why I started doing them, and when someone is converted like you ,to my side, well, thats icing on the cake....I really appreciate your comment Bill.... Have a beer on me! 🍺

I'm sure that willbe one sharp radio once you work your magic on it, Buzz :) I don't think I'll ever manage to get back into radios as much as I'd like to myself. I just spent the last week in the hospital with kidneys trying to fail because I didn't know I couldn't take Aleve because I'm diabetic. It made my sugar drop so low they wanted to fly me to Louisville to a big hospital there to workon me. I did manage toget them to take me by ambulance instead because I told them if they wanted me to die, put me up in the air and I'd die from sheer fright. I'm back home and my kidneys are working so I don't have to do dialysis, but I think I just escaped that fate by the skin of my teeth. So you'll forgive me if I just lay around and watch you restore them :)

YEAH!!!! Another BUZZERIFIC video and a new one to boot! I always enjoy seeing a new video from you on here! This looks like a fantastic one to restore...reminds me of the 1932 Mystery Cathedral Radio that you did such a fantastic job on. I have a request concerning this radio...especially the case. Would you PLEASE work your Buzz magic on the case and stain the entire case? I mean, the inside, the bottom, everything! I am glad the transformer turned out to be good. I am sure you could have wound more wire on it if the thing was open on one of the windings or more, but it would be a bit of a pain for you now wouldn't it? Still, you always do such a wonderful job of winding the coils. You also are going to add the Colonial Red paint, right? Oh, and about that capacitor being in the wrong place...I know you really DIDN'T make a mistake and wire it to the wrong place, it was Dickel that did that! ;-) Looking forward to the next video in this series.

thanks Wayne.....haha, yes, it was Dickel who changed that cap lead to to wrong pin!. that dirty rat! 😂....it looks like I will not only have to paint the chassis, but will have to paint the transformer too...maybe red, maybe black, maybe pink...haha....The cabinet needs super attention, it looked better on camera, than in real life.....You will see in part 2. cheers, Buzz🍺

Hi Buzz, Please clarify something for at least me. You had the rectifier tube out for the first turn ON. Where did you hook up your meter leads to get 800+ volts? Great start, by the way, to another fantastic deries. Thanks again.

pins 2 and 3 of the rectifier socket, which are the hi voltage windings on the transformer, 🍺🍺

Enjoyed another Buzz broke-it fixed-it video 😋 . A thought came to me and maybe you could do a quick video on this. How do you find all the little “comment” clips you insert into your videos? Do you go looking for them, or do you hear them in other media and capture ones that you think you might use later? Thanks for all the hard work you put into your repairs and videos. Very enjoyable!

Awesome! It's always a possibility that a small error happens in replacing components! Thankfully that misconnected capacitor was just a time-waster and not a power transformer waster! Buzz, I always look forward to your videos. They are educational, and also very entertaining and relaxing to listen to. Hard to find all those benefits in one video! This reminds me... I got a Crosley from around 1934 as well! It operates on an entirely different principle than yours but it still might interest you! The nameplate is almost identical which is cool! Seems Crosley branched out beyond radios for a while, and went into other domestic appliance markets. They invented something (or a feature of something we all have) which still has a legacy today. Here's the video about my Crosley find! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oLHw_wL8tdE.html

We've lost our Constitutional Republic. So many corrupted politicians have sold out our country. Democrats and Republicans. Some of the worst are the loudest and most self-righteous. We Americans have hard times coming at us and we'll need to get together and get to work fixing this starting right in our home towns. Good luck and God Bless the United States of America!
