Janusz POPŁAWSKI & Orkiestra Columbia pod dyr. Henryka Golda - W maleńkim domku (In A Tiny House) Tango z komedii muz. „Na Fali Eteru” (from the musical comedy On The Airvawes) (Fanny Gordon - Krzewiński, Brodziński), Columbia 1934 (Polish)
NOTE: This entirely forgotten Polish tango was written in 1934 by the popular hit and musical comedy composer Fanny Gordon, author of such great Polish hits of the 1930s as the tangos 'Nietoperze' (The Bats), 'Skrwawione serce' (My Bleeding Hart) or the foxtrot 'Pod Samowarem' (U Samovara) which, performed and recorded by Pyotr Leskchenco became an international evergreen.
Seemingly, the tango 'In a Tiny House' (W maleńkim domku) was part, as the label note says, of a larger project by Fanny Gordon: the musical play On The Airwaves ("Na fali eteru"). However, the play did not premiere until four years later, in 1938, at the operetta theatre run by actress Maria Malicka (Malicka Theatre). Starring the great stars of stage and film, Ina Banita and Igo Sym, the play became a big stage hit in Warsaw shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Interestingly, Fanny Gordon must have had ceded the rights to the show to another composer, Jerzy Lawina-Świętochowski (composer of the hit tango Morze, The Sea, from 1938 • Old Polish Tango: Morz... ), because only his name appears on the posters of the 1938 play.
The song had been giben a bravura tango interpretation by excellent as usuallly, dance orchestra led by Henryk Gold. It finds a good refrain singer in Janusz Popławski with his dramatic tenor.
The slideshow shows some advertisements of pre-war Warsaw shops and commercial products taken from the original program of the musical “On the Airvawes” from 1938.
