The A was John Deere's first true row-crop tractor, replacing the GP. There were several variants of the A. The A was the row-crop model. The AR was a standard (or fixed) tread model. The AO was an orchard model, with no exhaust stack and shielded fenders. There was also the AI industrial model, the AN with narrow front, the AW wide front, and the high-crop ANH and AWH. The model A was the first Deere tractor to come from the factory with rubber tires.

Thanks for the video! The fact that John Deere found a spot on the crank so all valves can be adjusted proves someone was thinking in the design process or manual writing!

Brings back memories of pulling the head on an AR about 1956 or 57. It had knocked a rod out.. It was originally on steel and my dad put rubber on it. It didn't have an oil pressure gauge just a little pin that moved up when the oil pressure came up. Lot's of memories running it.

Really enjoying your videos more and more! Thanks for putting them out. Gotta love the lack of electronics on these old war horses, strictly fire and steel !

Indian head gasket shellac. Been using that on gaskets for years works good too. Old wise man taught me about it.

you need to copy that manual, and use the copy for the working copy. do you ever use fealer gauge go/no go for the rocker adjustments? that makes sure it is not too wide. nice video it is so nice to see the rebuilding of the tractors! reborn for plow days event.

Thanks a lot, very good video. Much appreciated. I am rebuilding the engine of my 38 unstyled A. Hard to find f.i. reliable torque data. An electronic copy of your shop manual, never mind ho dirty it is, would be very helpful for me. I have installed Melling sleeves into the deeply pitted block so I can use the standard pistons. Very nice rebuild job.

You didn't mention if you ground the faces on the rockers?

Great series of videos. They are a tremendous help to a first timer like me. I have a question as to where you were able to purchase the new connecting rods for your John Deere A tractor. I am in Canada and have not been able to find these connecting rods new.

Are the copper washers better than the lead washers for the head bolts?
