Lincoln and McClelland had a mutual distrust for each other.Following the Union victory at Antietam, McClelland was removed for not pursuing Lee,maybe having reinforcements would've helped. Although he tried to return to field duty,he never did.I don't think you can blame Grant, that was Lincoln's decision.When he ran against Lincoln in 1864,he did not accept the Democratic platform,and having Pendleton as running mate did not help.Against popular belief, he was a good field general.Politics and War go hand in hand
