1937 Ohio River Flood in Louisville Kentucky
The Ohio River flood of 1937 took place in late January and February 1937. With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, 385 people died, one million people were left homeless and property losses reached $500 million ($8.723 billion when adjusted for inflation as of January 2019). Federal and state resources were strained to aid recovery as the disaster occurred during the depths of the Great Depression and a few years after the beginning of the Dust Bowl.

My grandma worked at the doll factory in downtown Louisville during the 1937 flood

My 93 year old grandmother talks about this often. She lived on what they called 11 row. Her daddy and his buddies made a boat and broke the windows from the corner grocery store for canned foods. They never knew what they'd eat that day but many times it turned out to be beans, her momma would cook them on a pot belly stove in the 1 room they found to rent. The water was rising so the men placed planks from each front porch up to the building where they were able to rent 1 room. The shotgun style homes, including hers had tall ceilings and water went to the top.

Flooded again in '64 and '97. I was there in 97, I was 6. Utterly terrifying. 50,000 homes ruined, 200mil in damages, many deaths. We were literally bailing water out of the house. It happens every 30yrs or so. I'm worried we're "overdue" for another one. UofL floods damn near every time it rains, and with climate change, I'm terrified the next flood will be our last. We'll be running the damn Derby on seahorses.

I enjoyed your video very much. Just FYI: Paducah is pronounced differently. It is like "Pu Dook' A" - accent on the 2nd syllable. I am from the area.
