Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the most monumental films in animation. The first color and sound feature length animated movie. It’s beloved by millions and still today regarded as one of the greatest animated films, what is it that makes Snow White so timeless? This is the story of Walt’s first masterpiece.
The story of the making of Snow White is one of technological wonder. The behind the scenes inventions that helped make the film advanced the whole history of animation! Use of the multi plane camera, new animation techniques and cel technology, combined with music, songs and a memorable cast of characters has made is a favorite for adults and kids alike.

I remember watching this film as an adult in 2000. I couldn't believe how perfectly animated it was, being such an old film. But the emotions it causes, joy, tenderness and sorrow, is what makes it a timeless animated movie.

The first DVD I bought was Snow White. A masterpiece of Art and Cinema. Clark Gable attended the premier and was crying at the end.

My favorite Disney princess of all time! My family called me little snow white when I was little. I had black curly hair, lips red, rosey cheeks, and pale skin as snow. I love her so much ❤❤❤

No joke. This was the first disney movie I ever watched. My father bought me and my sister a bootlegged VHS of the movie when we were kids in Nigeria in 2000. It is still a favorite of mine! Such a wonderful, well animated and written movie😄😄 Thank you Walt Disney. You are the greatest.

Oh, Snow white is my favorite, one of the greatest feature film cartoons that Disney ever facilitated in his career and its success, coupled with its timeless hand-drawn animation quality, has been unequalled up to this day. The first movie is always the starting point. There is absolutely zero question about that.

This has to be my favourite episode so far. I watch a lot of cartoons and animations in general and the idea of characters being emotional and having personalities is so common today that the fact that it once wasn't completely slipped my mind. I've always seen Snow Whit somewhat of a "starting point" for Disney animations but the thought of it being revolutionary in terms of storytelling and animation was something new to me. Thank you for this episode and I look forward to the next one :)

My most prized collector's piece is a production drawing from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It's a beautiful iconic image from the end of the "Whistle While You Work" number with the bird perched on her finger. This drawing was used to make a production cel which was painted for a single frame in that shot.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs proved that animation was a medium that could compete with- and top- any other. The standard of quality it represents remains the Gold Standard even today for cartoons. As a child, I enjoyed the ride; as a man, I still do. And Grumpy has remained my favourite, because he changes the most, and for the better; he goes from hostility for Snow White, to leading the charge against her evil enemy, whom they all fear. Good vs. Evil, pity vs. cruelty, love vs. jealousy, grief and joy, it is all in this film. Snow White is feminine and sympathetic, and so we want her to succeed. She proves her worth by heing kind, gentle, and strong in the face of adversity. She has skills and characteristics that fit her for happiness. She touches other's lives and makes them better, and those that love her reciprocate, and that is true empowerment. Disney's live action "remake", and the scorn its advocates have for its masterpiece namesake, will be as forgettable as any of their other recent attempts to top the great days of the company.

There was a beautiful feel I always had each time I watched this film as a kid and after I knew the history of the movie and how important it was, the experience became better. Great video, it makes me want to run in the woods and sing (but probably I will not do it)

6:55 - the Multiplane Camera - next time you're in San Francisco, stop by the Walt Disney Museum in the Presidio. In the bookstore on the left, you'll find an actual multiplane camera that the Disney studios used to photograph their masterpieces.

@@topsdaily_productions It really wasn't like that. This was the first animated feature to ever exist. Look at the state of animation when this company started just 11 years before. This film is one of the best 100 years later. "crunch" is still a problem in creative fields today. Like cyberpunk 2077 and the problems CDPR is facing. Are the employees there "slaves?" Greatness has never been associated with a good work/home life balance, sadly. But yea they were working really hard.

Snow White is a masterpiece but Fantasia (1940) is Walt's greatest achievement imo. He flung technology 100 fold forward to create it. He used a 2.40:1 aspect ratio (unheard of for *any* film at the time) and utilized multiple speakers to create surround sound (again, absolutely unheard of). They had to do a traveling road show to accommodate theaters to present it. It was designed to be in continual rotation with new shorts being added each year. Walt always looked forward and refused to do sequels. Fantasia is the only thing he ever looked back on and wondered why it wasn't the success it was destined to be. Fantasia is his magnum opus and, again imo, the greatest animated film ever made.Great job covering Snow White's depth and impact in only 12mins! Here's a bonus tidbit. Walt's animators weren't really keen on humor, so, as incentive, Walt paid any animator that came up with a good joke for the movie was paid $100 for each joke!

Hi Josh - one correction: Fantasia was shot in 1940's standard 1.33:1 aspect ratio. I know this can be confusing, because there were re-releases of the movie in the 1960s and 1970s that used the 1953 Cinemascope print format in order to access its 4-track magnetic sound system to carry the original 3 tracks of the 1940 road show release. These re-releases were often screened by unthinking projectionists who recognized a C'scope magtrack print and played it using their usual C'scope anamorphic projection lenses, giving the picture a widened look that degraded the appearance of the movie at 2.40:1 aspect ratio. I'm guessing this is what you saw. Fantasia looks much better at 1.33:1. More presentation format info/history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_(1940_film)

As an animator, I appreciate this examination of Disney's Snow White. You touched upon its inspirations, technical feats and cultural impact with concise clarity. My only criticism was that you brought up "The Old Windmill" as a case for the multiplane camera technique. While that is true, this animated short was essentially a demo/exercise in many of the innovations and effects that would eventually be implemented into Snow White, such as animation for animals, water and weather effects. Overall, though, a great video essay and intriguing channel project. Subscribed.

Great video! I never tire of hearing about how these films were made. For a while, Snow White was the only VHS tape I had as a child so I watched it so many times! I don't know what I'd consider my favourite Disney film, but I also remember watching Robin Hood a lot. Now, it's probably The Lion King.

Very informative, concise and just the right length. Snow White has definitely been one of my favorite films! And has been one of the most influential, along with The Little Mermaid. I think it’s difficult for us to look back and understand where the people who were calling it Disney’s folly were coming from. Exactly as the host mentioned, the animation from pre-1937 is leagues behind what was created for Snow White and even the Oldmill. So when they call it Disney’s Foley maybe in 1936 they were comparing it to cartoons that have been produced the previous year. So take a look at the concept art (caricature Snow White and shifty and thrifty Dwarfs) and imagine that as an hour and a half cartoon. #NotMySnowWhite 😂

Great review. I learned alot about the process and why Disney's decision to infuse realism in this masterpiece gives it an emotional depth. Showing other animated films of the time gave me some context, realized what a great leap forward Snow White represented. Well done.

Almost didn't get made because of a $1.5 million venture but thanks to his wife Walt pushed forward Had no idea it was based on the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale which was much darker Amazing it's still Walt Disney's first success and paved the way for all animated films It inspired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to produce the brilliant fantasy film, “The Wizard of Oz” in 1939 Charlie Chaplin gave it a big thumbs up It was something else they actually had audiences cry at an animated feature and has made $418 million thanks to reissues inspiring theme parks and a Broadway show Snow White is a nice character even though the voice actress sounds very Betty Boop-ish The prince has no personality and very little lines The Dwarfs are funny and easy to distinguish The Queen is standard being very vain but her design is impressive and becomes much scarier as the old hag I am glad though they featured more of the characters in kingdom hearts video games Most of the animators credited in “Snow White” are men, but the majority of inkers and painters were women The effort shows despite rigorous hours and the movie got a lot of recognition at the national library of Congress and the national film registry

Snow White is actually the first film I saw in theatre, back in the 90's when a lot of Disney classics were re-released with a new dub in Finland. As for my favorite Disney movie, it's a tie between Fantasia which made me love classical music and Beauty and the Beast in which I think they took all their decades worth of experience in turning fairy tales to movies and perfected the formula. This channel is really good. I only discovered it recently but I am hooked. :-)

Great analysis but I heavily disagree when you said "The cartoon needed to have a connection with the audience, something earlier cartoons couldn't do." That is COMPLETELY false. when Fleisher Studios first made cartoons (which Walt Disney paid people to give him credit instead of Fleisher), they were made only for adults and that's because of the cartoons themselves. They had talked and shown depression, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, death, inmates being electrocuted. This were topics that the audiences were able to connect with. Fleisher made his cartoons specifically to be relatable to the audience, which was why audiences continued coming back for them. Walt Disney was NOT the first to make a connection with audience members through cartoons first BUT he was the first to make it for kids.

Margaux Kramer All respects to Fleischer studios and their contributions to animation history. There are a lot of creators/animators who pre-dated Disney that don’t get enough credit. And when I think of surreal, trippy, and creative animation, Fleischer is the first to come to mind. That being said, I think what Disney wanted to do was have a greater focus on stories and themes that connected with the audience in terms of having empathy for the animated characters onscreen rather than just laughing at their gags. Fleischer cartoons featured mature content and creative animation, but Disney was going in a different direction. It doesn’t make one superior.

While this video describes the production of Snow White well, I have one problem with it: the idea that more "lifelike" animation is more relatable. There are many animated cartoons that I've seen that were not lifelike, yet I enjoyed and found relatable just as much as Snow White-style cartoons. More lifelike animation may be more relatable for some, but not necessarily for me. And weren't some of the cels in the multiplane camera made of glass instead of celluloid?

I lived in a cottage that was built by the man that did all the water coloring for that movie apparently he built his house next to it which is a giant man manor house style ranch in Southern California had some crazy things happen in that cottage stumbled upon this video in my search for the truth of the weird shit that happened in that cottage thanks for the video

If I could make a live action remake of the 1937 cartoon movie I'd cast Mayim Bialik as the Queen/witch and James Corden as the woodsman. I can't think of one single actress to portray Snow white. Maybe they could photoshoot the 1937 animated snow white onto a real person.
