@Joshua Ashley I'm glad they didn't. What would the story even be about? No villain could replace Maleficent, and bringing her back would have cheapened the story.
@@lucas5665 funnily enough, Perrault's version of Sleeping Beauty does have a sequel! They go to the Prince's kingdom, but he is called away to war and while he is gone Sleeping Beauty's mother-in-law (who is an ogress) tries to eat Sleeping Beauty and her children. The cook helps trick the queen into thinking she's eating them when actually she's just eating deer meat. When the queen finds out she's been tricked she orders that the princess and cook be thrown into a coffin full of snakes. Fortunately the prince comes home at that moment. The queen is so embarrassed that she jumps into the coffin herself. Sleeping Beauty, the prince and their children live happily ever after.
Everything about this movie is so charming, elegant and classy. I still can't understand how a folktale that's been accompanied to Tchaikovsky's music gets shamed today just because it doesn't match today's standards on female characters. All the three older classics (Snow white, Cinderella and Sleeping beauty) deserve so much more recognition
Yes. Those three princess don't deserve to be shamed... They have such kind personalities, dreams, and ideals. If I get to insult and disdain any of these princesses in the future, then I do not deserve to be called a feminist. Hating on them is equal to hating on women from the past.
@@elirchi9214 i do agree with snow white and cinderella, but aurora didn't have much of a personality and that's completely fine. the movie was more about the story revolving around her rather than it being about her and I think it worked well
@jf k and don’t forget how although she loved the “guy” she met in the forest, she gave up the idea of being with him because of her duty as a princess ( she had to marry a prince to unite the two kingdoms) , adding to that the fact that she was a princess was thrown at her so suddenly. She is not a weak princess , her light just needs a little more time to be seen and understood🥰
@jf k so true , I don’t believe there is a weak princess , you just have to look at them closely, and to realize that being strong , doest always mean fighting physically, it also means taking responsibility, standing up , and fighting for whats right. The people who believe that those princesses are weak , are truly narrow minded
Maleficent is still one of my all-time top favourite Disney villainesses! First time I saw the movie when I was little, I must've been the only kid on the face of the earth who wasn't scared of Maleficent. Instead, I was like, "Ohhh...I think I'm in love...!" 😍 (I know, I know; I'm weird...)
Sleeping Beauty was the last Disney adaptation of a fairy tale for some years; the studio did not return to the genre until 30 years later, after Walt Disney died in 1966, with the release of The Little Mermaid.
The main reason is that even though it was the second-highest grossing movie of 1959 (right after "Ben Hur") it was so expensive to produce that the profit-margin was relatively-small. It also took a very, _very_ long time to produce, taking about 6 years (Don Bluth said they felt like they were painting The Last Supper.) Both factors (but primarily the expense ) caused Disney to start cutting back considerably on future animated features & for a time, there was a definite possibility that the animation department might've been closed altogether.
Here's A Fact: Mary Costa is the only original Disney Princess voice actress who is still alive today at 90 years old. (Edit): Make that 91 now (Edit): 92 now!
In my opinion sleeping beauty has the most gorgeous background art, and style to the animation. The amount of detail that went into all the backgrounds is simply stunning.
the man speaking about how he painted the backgrounds, looked into the art of that Era, went back to its origins, left pieces of himself behind in the work... bless that man. He moved me to tears. I can clearly see he dedicated his whole life to his craft. Respect.
These Cgi characters are getting too close to realism. There's hardly any effort or hand crafted originality. If they want to be lazy about movies they should've stayed with live action
Don’t call it lazy, it took 75 animators 4 years to create on Frozen 2, just because you don’t like how something is made doesn’t mean you need to spit in the face of the people who worked on it.
I agree to an extent. as a 2d artist (and aspiring animator) , Nothing today will ever compare to the soul and heart that 2D animation has, but the complexity and and skill of 3D animation is still very masterful and wonderful to watch, and Deserves recognition in their own right. Both are wonderful forms of art and are both respectful pieces of medium.
Sleeping Beauty is such a beautiful film. All the old classics are. I can't get enough of them, and I wish animating studios would still animate like this today.
Why did the american english accent sounded so romantic back then? I watch classic films mainly for this reason.. the way they articulate the words and the tone of their voice
Well this is actually a created dialect specifically for actors, singers, anyone speaking over the air, so it could be received better and sound clearer because of the radio/audio waves of the time. Over time technically got better and that style of speaking died out.
It's known as mid-Atlantic speech, I think because radio and sound were so dodgy in unpredictable back then they used this kind of talking so as to sound loud and clear, I like it, I prefer it to the New York/LA accents anyways
@@charlessoutherton8946 radio and sound were dodgy and unpredictable *in 1959* ?!? I assure you they were not. When you don't know what you're talking about, it's best to just stay silent.
People overlook early Disney movies, especially Sleeping Beauty for the sole fact that it doesn't fit into modern standards of feminism. But they don't understand that those movies still don't degrade women. It's just that they are fairy tales and are not focused solely on sending a strong message through the mc, but making the atmosphere ethereal and paying equal attention to the secondary characters along with the art, music, singing, setting etc. The main characters don't have more screentime than the rest of those things, but still, the focus is on them. They are not forgotten or overshadowed. And people complain how little lines Aurora has, while they rarely complain how little lines or roles the princes in Snow White, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid have. It's not always about that, but how much that character's lines and screentime leave an impact. And that's why Aurora's presence in this movie is quite enough.
@@hsnrb9959 just shit up with commenting on everyone here, downwriting Aurora and this awesome movie it's clearly not your place which is actually your own fault cause you don't have the logic to understand the meaning behind her character and this story which wasn't boring at all.
I did always love Maleficent more than any other character. But I never thought that Aurora didn't have a good character or personality. I'll admit that I didn't see much other motivation in her other than that she wanted to be with Phillip, but I hadn't realized in my younger years just how much she was going through not mainly because of some romantic love, but because much of her life got turned upside down in just one evening. Can you imagine having to go through that? And remember when she was just about to prick her finger? She hesitated for just a moment showing that she had the strength to resist the curse even for just that moment, despite all that she was going through. Even now, I still love Maleficent's character the most, but I'm glad to have focused more on Aurora's feelings in the movie as well as the fairies. Also, Hubert is great, too xD
Bro aurora isn't even the main character the three bad ass sassy fairies are. Aurora is just a glorified side character. Of course she doesn't have the best riding because why should she?
I had no idea. This is one of my all time favorite movies growing up. The level of innovation artistry and Tchaikovsky’s opera. How intricate and beautiful. It now makes so much sense to me.XX
🤦🏻♀️ Tchaikovsky composed the music to the ballet. It’s a BALLET. Disney created their own soundtrack that was influenced from the music of the ballet. You literally have google at your fingertips
I remember watching this from my childhood when it was on VHS tape, I still have it when I was 7 years old. Brings me back memories looking at the making of sleeping beauty, thumbs up if you grew up watching Disney movies on VHS in the 90's.
She’s the most beautiful princess of all time. Maleficent is the best villain ever in Disney history and Sleeping Beauty is just a masterpiece, the soundtrack, the plot, the fight scene. Pure perfection.
As a person who grew up watching modern disney, i personally prefer 2D animation. its not that 3D animation is bad, but something about this movie is so charming and cozy. You can tell they took so long on these old movies.
I think part of it has to do with the style. This talks about how carefully the style was chosen, while films nowadays have virtually the same style. (Before I get any replies about it, I'm talking about modern Disney princess films, not a film like Spiderverse)
The story is never as powerful as other Disney films and it never ranks high but it does for me. I love the singing style more than that in any other film, and party because my mom would sing it to me when I was little and we danced to it too. 😂
The use of the Tchaikovsky’s ballet score alone is absolutely brilliant, the way they adapted the animation to the notes like the birds happily twirling and villain threatening is amazing. Then add in all the medieval research and artistry from old tapestry for the artwork, it’s an incredibly beautiful piece of work.
Ah, I'm so glad that Walt, despite all the costs, took well-deserved pride in this work of his. It really was worth it. I hope that Disney classics like this one will be continuously appreciated for years to come.
They didn't mention it here, but the artists said that there was a very definite, palpable feeling of foreboding on those days when Eleanor Audley was on the studio-lot to either record her lines as *Maleficent,* or to act out the part for the movie-cameras. Even when the artists didn't see or interact with her, they said they could still feel her presence; there was a whole different vibe about the place & they just knew that *_"She_* ....is on the lot today!"
I named our daughter Aurora after Sleeping Beauty. My husband named her Aurora ofter the airplane. I was 8 months along before we found a girls name we agreed on. She now is a mother of a little boy. Now we live next to a young couple with their own little Aurora.
When Disney used to have magic, not anymore, Sleeping Beauty is the most beautiful Disney film for me and Aurora the most beautiful princes. The art, the colors, the atmosphere, the woods are so unique, everything was brilliant.
the combination of the announcer's voice, the soft definition, and the 90s transitions really make me feel like a kid watching my disney vhs collection again
This movie means so much to me. It is my whole childhood summed up into one. The nostalgia and the magic i feel every time i watch this movie(like a million times) is indescribable. No other movie or show can possibly replicate this magic for me.😢💗💗
I almost want to cry that movies are no longer labors of love like this film was: this film is one I grew up watching, and it will always hold a special place in my heart
The classics never fail, to this day it is still a beautiful movie, it does not need to be 3d to be good, those drawings and the details say everything.
There are some art jerks in the world saying "real artists don't use references", and here are Disney's old masters with full video references and going "why do it the hard way?"
Even though this film is suppose to be about Princess Aurora, the three good fairies are the actual central characters/protagonists since the story focuses on them throughout most of the film. Therefore, Aurora is sadly the "false protagonist" of this film. The bright side to this is that over time, Princess Aurora became popular throughout Disney media and became part of the Disney Princess franchise.
Sleeping Beauty was the first ever Disney movie I saw. So this movie has a special place in my heart. Idc if I'm too old for this movie, it's my favorite and will always be my favorite Disney movie. I find Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Snow White as the most underrated movies of all time. I don't get why people hate them movies, especially Sleeping Beauty.
I'm a 90s kid. I grew up with the latest achievements in Disney animation. Beauty and the Beast, Lion King and of course, eventually, Frozen. And yet, I still don't think any movie in Disney history has ever, or indeed WILL ever, compare the artistic genius of Sleeping Beauty.
9:14 Fun fact: another live actors for performance models to bring the characters of Sleeping Beauty to the screen were Don Barclay (King Hubert), Hans Conried (the voice of Captain Hook from Peter Pan and as the performance model and demo voice of King Stefan) and Jane Fowler (stand In model for Maleficent and the performance model for the Queen)
Everyone thinks that Disney's most iconic era is the 90s Renaissance, but I'd beg to differ and say that the 1950s (the Silver age, but the Golden age is just as important) is the most iconic and memorable era; it showed proof that Walt Disney & his crew poured their hearts and souls into the making of their movies. Most of the 90s Disney movies are amazing and some even match the charming of the older films. However, the thing is, the films from the 50s had *the* one and only Walt Disney working on them (even if he was also working on live action films and Disneyland) which makes the films he produced all the more magical; something that even the later movies couldn't live up to. Anything made in Walt's era could NEVER be remade or topped.
Every time i watchd Sleeping Beauty, i did not stop the video without watching this featurette. Sleeping Beauty has some of the most beautiful visuals in a Disney animated feature.
This is a beautifully made video of a beautifully made movie. Aurora has been my childhood ever since I could genuinely remember. My older sister was Belle and I was always Aurora, she was a part of me and still is. It's just so special to me how much time, effort, skill, imagination and novelty was put into this film and I feel lucky to have the privilege to watch it🌹
Man. Walt’s drive to go for a totally different approach for the film compared to the studio’s previous work really shows how far the mighty have since fallen.
I always looked forward to the disney vhs tapes having these at the end. Even though blurays and dvds have special features already, there was just something special about finishing a vhs movie and seeing this at the end. I'm still so glad everything was documented. This has always been my favorite disney princess movie~
This movie is just so elegant and beautiful I love the music it just gives me a feeling that I love and when I was little I used to watch this movie 10 times in a row it brings back so many memories like if u agree
I loved the animation style in this movie. The backgrounds were gorgeous and I always wished they would show how they were painted. I felt they were just as interesting as the animation. Thanks for the video.
Aurora is the most underrated Disney princess ever, and she needs more love. I love her a lot, I think she’s very nice. And Sleeping Beauty is my absolute favorite Disney princess film because of this.
I had the blessing of seeing SLEEPING BEAUTY on the big screen back in 1992. The movie that I loved just stole my heart. It will always be my favourite Disney movie.
This is the first Disney movie I can remember watching, it's part of my earliest childhood memories and I have always loved the music. I now have a daughter that I can share my love of Disney movies with and once upon a dream is a song I sing to her often. I even have a music box for her with that music
Walt was a true pioneer, a creative artist and visionary. His drive, determination, and creative imagine was a God-given gift and truly was the hard won work of a genius and master storyteller! We shall never see his like again -- nor those of his talented staff of artists, designers, and imagineers! God bless him!
So many of the people involve are so articulate and professional with their roles whether they are the actors, the artists, or the choreographers, they're all just so talented and professional in their respective fields.
This is one of my favorite disney princess films simply because it's so visually beautiful. I am tempted to pause it every 10 seconds or so just to admire the backgrounds 😂 also, Mary Costa reminds me of Julie Andrews because of the way she eases into those high notes, making it seem like an extension of her speaking voice.
Sleeping Beauty was always the Disney movie I gravitated towards, even though Maleficent scared me to death lol I loved the 3 good fairies and Prince Phillip was my favorite Disney prince! Also Aurora and that hair, lovely voice, great musical score, so incredible!
It was my favorite Disney as a kid. Though the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast were just out, I always prefered The sleeping beauty for its esthetic and music. And the blue dress is the best ho ho ho
Sleeping beauty is by far my favourite Disney film, it truly is magical. The soundtrack, design, story and characters all come together so perfectly it's like a dream. It also features my favourite princess: aurora❤ I know that alot of people see her as boring but she really isn't, she represents a shy and soft personality and has a quiet strength about her which I love. And when people say she doesn't appear much in her own movie or that we don't see much of her, well we do! Watch both maleficent movies, we get to see more of her there! Overall I think she's a perfect classy lady who embodies beauty inside and out❤
beautifully done…Sleeping Beauty is so brilliant and stylistically different from every other Disney animation project before and after…it showed more care and iconic design for its female characters, and in our opinion holds up better than any of its animated peers. The actors used in the animation guides were so fantastic, and the animators were so brilliant and drew such beautiful, rich female characters in the fairy godmothers, Briar Rose, Maleficent…and of course the marriage of Tchaikovsky’s score and Mary Costa’s voice were just magic 🪄✨ total banger, thanks for such a lovely video 🌈✨🥀💖
What what?! They used live references? Me here thinking it came out of their imagination and blaming myself for using references for everything I do!! Now I can work without worries.
When I was little I enjoyed this so much after watching the movie. Sleeping Beauty influenced my love of medieval art as well as the golden age of illustration. I'm so glad this was uploaded, it's comforting and great to be able to visit some of my roots.
A masterpiece of cinematic animation. Mary Costa's voice characterization of Princess Aurora is perfect, as is the Peter Tchaikovsky musical score (skillfully adapted by George Bruns)!
Stylistically Sleeping Beauty is quite breathtaking. I have been in awe of it since childhood and It has always been a firm favourite of mine. Maleficent is a masterfully created villain and the music score is sublime.
We lived in South Texas on the Mexico boarder for 20 years. I raised my kids there. Two seasons in there… Hot and less hot! I would pull the dark shades and drapes, turn down the air conditioner and put this movie on for my kids. We ate popsicles and watched Sleeping Beauty, thinking cool thoughts! Lol! Sweet memories!😍😍😍
