Sure is good to see the youngsters wrenching and learning about the old stuff theyre having a great time and gaining and appreciation of the technology of the past and gaining and appreciation of how technology improved everything

Absolutely. These two young fellas are my son, and his best friend. I got my son into mechanical stuff at a young age, and he's actually in a mechanics apprenticeship program. He's pretty well-versed in most things, but the old tech like carburetion and points ignition is where I still have to step in.

Great job, one thing Ford built that was actually good.😆 You never pointed out they were spinning it backwards....they just needed to look at the fan fin angles. 😃

I guess I left that part on the cutting room floor. Was pretty obvious to me, anyway. Well, young and inexperienced. They'll get there, eventually. Meantime, neither one of them is particularly familiar with the old stuff like carbs, distributors, and points- and that stuffwas way more critical, right?

@@DocSprocket yep, they are learning gotta start somewhere. Great that you are taking the time to teach them.

If the origonal wngine you guys pulled of is a 39 sereal number dont junk it whatever you do its a supper rear block berry colectable and worth alot of money. For example a restored 40’ - 48”’ 9n or 2n can fectch 5-6k a restored 39’ can fetch 30k- 40k. I recomwnt putting up up for sale on a forum based swap meet like yesterdays tractors forums. Just FYI

The very early 1940 models with the early features are also worth a good bit more than the later ones, too(aluminum hood, aluminum grill with horizontal bars, smooth hubs, etc.)...

I thought at first, this was going to be a video of converting a tractor to be a trail rider!
@DocSprocket
@DocSprocket 2 года назад
You'd need some pretty big trails! I'd actually love to get my hands on a 9N or better yet an 8N, but I really have no practical use for one.

So what are your thoughts about swapping out old style point distributors for a solid state type? I've heard they are great, until they are dead and that with a points, you can at least limp back home.
@DocSprocket
@DocSprocket 2 года назад
Funny you mention this. I literally had this exact conversation with my wife 20 minutes ago while out for our evening walk. Yes, the older tech (carb, distributor, points) requires more maintenance and in all technicality, is much more prone to (usually minor) failure. The new stuff will run trouble and maintenance free for a very long time, but when it fails- and it will- you're in a much worse place. With a screwdriver, couple wrenches, and maybe a bit of wire, any of the above old-tech failures can be addressed in pretty short order and get you on your way again. In the case of a tractor, literal field repairs. Now let's suppose your ECU takes a dump in the middle of the back 40 at 6pm on a Saturday night. Good luck to you. So in terms of day to day reliability, the modern stuff wins- but when it really matters, old tech for the win

Nothing wrong with points. Keep it simple. Just my opinion

That’s definitely not a 1939 9n a 39 has an aluminum dash and column with the starter button on the dash, not by the shifter

I'll take your word for it. That's what I was told, and nobody has any idea what might have been changed along the way. Any idea what year it actually is based on what you saw?

All right sprocket how much time did you spend on that up draft carburetor before you shot this video
@DocSprocket
@DocSprocket 2 года назад
Zero. Got lucky on that one. I think the previous owner stored it dry. I really didn't step in and do anything other than a bit of minor direction until they started having ignition problems. These young fellas aren't real familiar with old tech like breaker points.

Gosh I wish I had that much luck with my old 56 601 Ford I never got that carburetor run right and finally just sold the tractor

I don't think that is a 39. Wrong radius arms, wrong dash and starter button in wrong place. Also wrong radiator

..Clickety-click techno music has no place in a video about an old tractor(pretty sure it's not a 1939)...listening to the engine starting, then the clickety-click crap kicked in, volume turned down...
@DocSprocket
@DocSprocket Год назад
Are you talking about the 30-second montage at the very beginning? Jeez, dude... that wasn't even a start-up clip. It didn't fire, for THAT you'd have to actually watch the rest of the video. Can't please everyone.
