Not my favorite dress, but definitely my favorite decade for fashion! I enjoyed this playful attempt at a house dress, and can't wait to share the more structured pieces I've made for this decade in another video!

Your sense of humor and dry delivery is just wonderful! The green buttons are so bright and obnoxious, in the best way. The bows on the pockets are my favorite detail.

I am almost 51 and a fairly new sub. I just love your talent, d-r-y sense of humor (as if I ever leave the house) & and all of this while being so young. It is really nice seeing someone from the younger generations taking up a hobby/career using forgotten talents and being so passionate about it. Anyway - my mother was a teenager in the 40's and kept all her patterns from that era. So...this is how I learned to sew! It's no wonder I feel like I just "winged" it a lot of the time, figuring out how to put things together on my own. I did not, however, baste or hand-sew hardly anything. I just simply didn't have the time for that kind of tediousness. Thank you for teaching me things I should have learned ages ago!!

Although it sounded like you needed a decoder ring for those instructions, the dress turned out lovely! One of my grandmothers passed away long before I was born, but every picture there is of her, in her "younger" days, shows her and my older aunts wearing dresses just like this one. Watching this gave me warm fuzzies thinking that they would have had to gone through similar steps to make their dresses. Thank you so much for this video! Wish I could give you more than one thumbs up!

I have images of my mother wearing a dress very much like this one. Her hair was styled like your is, as well. She would have been 88 this year. As far as the fabric being from the 30's; fabric stashes are not a new concept, a woman in the 40's could have very well made a dress with some fabric that had been hanging around for a while. After all, they were getting super thrifty at that point.

My mother was born in 1951 and she still has some fabrics from the 70ies and she used the fabrics from her mother who was born in 1924. So me 1992 baby learned how to sew with fabric that was at least 20 years older than me but I loved all the colors.

"Buttons up the front *and* a placket???" 😂 you make me chuckle so much. Of course, you're a smart girl, you've figured out that the side placket is about the shape/fit, haven't you? (& not for getting the garment on & off.) Later & similarly, there were dresses with a small zipper in that same 'placket spot' which also zipped right up the centre back, & of course pull on-off dresses where that pesky little placket reappears with yet another tiny zipper, for no purpose other than to shave an inch or so off of the waist.

Girl. I feel you. I just made a 40’s style dress with a side zip and buttons down the front of the bodice. Whyyyyy! It works just fine with either just the buttons or the side zip. I learned how to do bound button holes for this dress I just made. I had the same problem with them looking kind of wonky on the inside ah well. It was a good first attempt. Your buttonholes look beautiful! As does the rest of your dress. I’m so excited for more 40’s style dresses on this channel!

Shoulder pads would've been tacked in to be removed during laundering. Use some green nail varnish on the belt buckle to match it to the buttons. Love watching you create such cute garments. Lace gloves would've finished the ensemble in those days.

I just completed Simplicity 2759 vintage 1940's blouse in raw silk using fabric from a curtain for the short sleeve and a vintage 1940's floral print for the 3/4 length sleeves with scalloped neckline. I adore the 1940's vintage garments because I am 5"2 and it seems that decade flattered my height and size after the 1920's decade. I have been sewing for 9 months now and made over 25 vintage/retro garments and now I have a wardrobe to wear. I will be attending my college homecoming weekend events and everyday I will be wearing my vintage makes; 1949 blouse and slacks, 1959 culottes, 1947 halter dress. great video

I had actor ofvthe range Bernina overlocker ( all my sewing machines are Bernina). In six years I got one good seam. It was so frustrating. I invested in a Baby Lock. For those with a real interest in womenswear from the 1940s there is a TV series called "Goodnight Sweetheart" which is set during the first half of the 1940s and covers both general day wear plus dressy nightclub clothing in later episodes. Not sure now who made it but possibly BBC, or when but probably later 1990s/early 2000s. Star is Nicholas Lyndhurst and is really worth it for the clothing alone, all ages and stations in life.

Nice job! I think it is cuter with a contrasting belt, so I'm glad you didn't have enough material for that. It would be fun if you did a black-and-white photo shoot in your 1930s and 1040s clothing for an even more authentic period feel! (Not that they didn't have colors in the 30s and 40s - but their photos would have been in b&w.) I think pink, white, and green make a beautiful color combination. This looks just like a dress my aunt used to wear back in the '40s! I wasn't born until the '50s, but I saw a photo of her wearing a dress like this one. (it was a b&w photo! LOL!

Great video. I hope sometime we get a tour of your vintage pieces - perhaps you could show the seam finishing you are finding - I'd love to see how a raw edge looks 70+ years later!
@ProfoundConfusion
@ProfoundConfusion 6 лет назад
The raw edges of tightly woven, light &medium weight cottons start to get a little fuzzy , which "meshes" the cut fibres together & prevents them from fraying (somewhat), especially if they've been cut with pinking shears. Also, you have to remember that even though the garment is 70+ years old, it's spent most of that time in storage, not in use. Thank You Angela!! Another awesome video!
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 5 лет назад
Maybe someday! I think all of them have just had pinked edges (factory garments), or the seam allowance whip stitched down (for home made garments). Both methods hold up really well in the skirt seams, but the material often wears down and frays past the stitch line in the shoulders of garments, leading to split seams. :(
