I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of Los Angeles and San Francisco 1940s , we can clearly see what is happening in broad daylight,
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔sound design added only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)

Alternate timeline maybe? We're definitely living in one now. Photographic Technology back then was nowhere near what it is in This timeframe. I suspect Digital cameras were in play here.

@@paulmaudlin7651 Nonsense. Film photography, especially black and white, could be every bit as sharp and high resolution as anything now in digital. It depended on the photographer, the camera, and the film. Only recently has digital photography equaled the best of film. And what do you mean, “I suspect digital cameras were in play here.”? That doesn’t even make sense. What has been done is a very skilled digital restoration which was then colorized.

The San Francisco film is from slightly different times. At 1:55 is a MUNI 1949 Twin Coach trackless trolley on Market Street. At 5:03, some MUNI 1951/1952 Marmon-Herrington trackless trolleys can be seen on Market Street near Powell. But at 5:54, Market Street still had four sets of street car tracks and "Iron Monster" street cars. That was before the PCC cars had arrived and before Market Street got any trackless trolleys. I'd say that was circa late 1944. The outer two sets of the four tracks were removed starting in December of 1944, after the MUNI had taken over the Market Street Railway Co. I loved those White buses. The MUNI had many Whites, but later settled on a large number of Mack buses. Based on what I've seen and with the automobiles, most of the San Francisco film is circa 1953, with the exception of the brief clips around 5:54, which was prior to December of 1944.

Wow. You seem to be an expert on this! As a native, I remember SF streetcars and buses back to 1960, and by that time none had cowcatchers, so that section of the film was definitely older.

Whoa cool. You know your SF transportation. I just remember the old green and cream streetcars we used to ride for the 5 cent student fares in the 1970s. But if it's 1953 then I would have to go over to Oakland and meet my mom who was graduating from high school in that year. Got it! Now I know where to go on the time travel journey. Cool.

I was thinking the same thing - mostly do to the lack of any military WW2 service men and women on leave in the streets or anything else emblematic of the war can be seen. For that reason- I thought the film must be late 1940's or very early 1950's.

Also, you can spot some 1950-1954 cars if you look closely. Since they're much newer than the rest, most will be older cars. But it does indicate that much of the filming was done during the very early 1950's as well.

It looks like a movie set - too beautiful to be real. The design aesthetic of everything (including the signs/clothing etc as well as the architecture) is exquisite. It all looks remarkable clean as well compared to today. Things got really shabby.

@@MultiJejje Well, that’s not true at all. Until the the 2000 or the 2010 census (can’t remember which offhand) San Francisco had its highest population in the 1950 census. For about the next fifty years it dropped, although the population of the Bay Area as a whole kept growing. You can look it up. Population has little to do with it. It’s attitude and a sense of both community and personal responsibility that make a difference.

These bring tears to my eyes as what was is no more. I was born in 70s and from these videos I can see a truly remarkable era that I've missed . Course back then was taken for granted all that was , for as of today's times I see just how much was taken for granted compared back then. Maybe I'm not saying this properly. I just see the big difference from an era that was clean, respectful, trust in neighborhoods, kids could play around the neighborhoods, now they can't even go outside and still get shot in their own houses by drive by shooting. I don't cry for the today's or tomorrows anymore. I cry for the what once was, and will never be again.

Film starts: going north on Flower Street in downtown Los Angeles, turns right onto Seventh Street (the street with the streetcars, which, later, the tracks would be removed. Metrorail subway tunneled directly under that block of Seventh Street 1988-1990)...then turns right (south) on Hope Street, stops mid-block. The rest of the film is San Francisco.

I enjoy your historical views of various cities, especially those of California. I believe that these scenes of San Francisvo are from a couple of different time periods, however. I spotted a 1954 or 1955 Studebaker Conestoga station wagon (only built in 54 & 55) and the use of White Motor city buses, would indicate prior to 1955. The Muni started taking delivery of Mack "D" series buses that year. Nonetheless, your updated views are greatly appreciated and a wonderful look at our past history. Thank you and keep it up!

My neighbor who just turned 84, said this is definitely the early '50s, maybe '54 because women's hair and fashion was still '40s influenced. She said women's hair and fashion didn't start "going down the dumper" until '55. I've seen old movies from the 40s and the 50s and I agree with her. Women in the 40s looked elegant and sexy.

I can show grandchildren how it was in MY childhood years and, since the footage is restored and semi-colorized, it gets their attention, especially when I cast it to my 75" screen! Some films are/were formulated to be sharper than others. And I must repeat that many films degrade over time; depends on the film, how they are stored and so forth.

@NASS: I'm sure people are wondering "who shot all this, and why?" This is called "process footage" or "production footage" and was shot by one or more of the major Hollywood studios (MGM, Warner Bros etc.) using the highest quality equipment. It is purposely as generic as possible. A typical application: On a sound stage, indoors, you have a car cut in half, Bogart and Bacall are talking in the back seat, the front half of the car is gone, replaced by camera, lights, mic, etc. Behind the car, seen through the rear window, is a rear-projection screen on which are shown the street scenes you see in these videos. It looks like the actors are having a conversation in a real car traveling through the city. Apparently these films have found their way out of the studio's archives for us to enjoy. I recommend you visit the Prelinger Archive of ephemeral films; there is a lifetime's worth of material like this, lots of home movies and films with real color (Kodachrome doesn't degrade). The paint colors on these old cars are spectacular!

Started watching your channel about a week ago, and since then I at least watch between 5 or more videos a day, give or take.... LOL.... I just want to thank you for the work you do preserving part of History. I see signs in the background that I had no idea the stores were around that long? Sure a store will say " been around for 50 years." But until you watch a video, and see how small some of the stores that are big conglomerates now does it really sink in. For example I saw a sign that read ( Target) it was just a little store. Now I get a real sense of what it means to for some companies to work their butt off to get where they are today. So much more I want to say but I'll save that for another comment. Thank you again for what you do and please do not stop! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In this video-The beginning Up to 1:38 it look's like 1948 to the 1950's to me. At 0:10 a most beautiful car for sure ! It's ENORMOUS !! Plus At 1:43 it look's like 1955' to 1963 ? The car you mention in the beginning at 0:10 is an old Cadillac Sedan 1946/47 with the opening of the video and makes the turn and the one at 1:43 that's parked is an old Ford Mercury unless you're referring to the one with the big grille that's coming toward the camera. That might be an old Packard from the mid-1930's.

Yes my father lived in San Francisco when I was a child, I lived in Los Angeles with my mother and sisters. I would visit him there. He was working class, and so was the city largely. It was a wonderful place.

It’s a sobering thought to stop and think I was already born back when this was filmed, and Harry S Truman was our President! Anyway, don’t know about you guys, but I’m always ready to time travel every time one of these remarkable films is uploaded. Actually, I would go back in a heartbeat!

Wonderful work you've done, and thanks so much for sharing it with us! I was especially fascinated by the men riding on the exterior of the cable car at about the 3-minute mark. People in those days were smarter--they were able to comport themselves without managing to get killed and the family inviting a scavenger (aka lawyer) in to bankrupt the companies involved. And the cable-car turnaround at about 5:00--thanks for throwing that in!

At 3:46 there is movie advertised with title finishing with the word Suite. The previous word finishes with the letter E. This would suggest that the movie showing is Executive Suite, which was released May 6, 1954, consistent with the previous observation of cars as recent as the 1954 model year.

Wow, no red lights, or stop signs anywhere so far in this marvelous redone video! Someone thought about future generations!!! COOL! Thanks for putting this out there. It just takes me back to a time when people got along and there was no hatred. California, looked wonderful with some empty lots and some of the fancier homes didn't have cameras and high walls built around them. The stars felt safe, and so did the average Joe!

I'm looking for clues to find out the exact year here. At 1:54 it looks like a theatre showing movies starring Burt Lancaster, but I can't make out the name of the movie. Other persons here claim it must be in the 1950s due to the car models, but I wouldn't know about that. Note to self: Whenever you go back in time, get a newspaper like Marty McFly did so you can verify the year.

I think the second name is Robert Mitchum. Lancaster and Mitchum starred together in "The List of Adrian Messenger" (1963) - But, it does not look like 1963 to me.
