Great vids as always. I don't normally comment but you asked for it. Lol. I have some Farmall experience. I grew up dirt poor on a small East Coast Canadian farm. I'm 58 now. As a kid, Dad had a "Super C." I think about a 1951. Great tractor. We ploughed rocky soil and pulled things that poor old gal was never intended to pull. It was maybe, 20 horsepower. She never failed despite a great deal of hard use. A few memories. She smoked a bit. Didn't use much oil but would occasionally foul the center two plugs if left idling. Diagnosis of the fouled plug was via a wooden handled screwdriver which you shorted between plug and block. No rpm drop on a cylinder equaled a fouled plug. Let a finger touch the metal ferrule of the screwdriver when shorting out a plug and holy crap. What a shock. I did that twice. Tractor running about 75% rpm for the test. Wow. Found the screwdriver about 30' away. Young and impatient. Fourth gear. You couldn't start a trailered "road load" in 4th. of course. So you started in 2nd or 3rd. At max speed you crunched into the next higher gear. Up hills were different. You stopped at the base of the hill and chose the gear to get you over the top. Starter. It took a firm hand. You had to pull the starter handle sharply and firmly. Otherwise the starter would lock up. Not a big deal. You loosened the starter bolts and wiggled the starter around a bit before retightening. Always worked. Last ride. About a day after my Dad's funeral in 98. I was in the military posted maybe 2000 miles away. I didn't have much time. My very young son and I took a look at the tractor. Sitting outside and unused for maybe a year. Some plastic covering the engine. A soup can covering the exhaust. I turned on the fuel. Then the ignition. One very sharp tug on the starter rod and it was running. I let it warm up and then with my 4 year old on my lap, we did a slow exploration of my old home property. My boys first experience with steering a vehicle.

+1. Mustie, one of the great things about your videos is they don't feel forced or gimmicky, unlike the soulless "content" you find on a lot of channels where you can tell they're just trying to fill time and get more views. Please continue being you, and do what comes naturally. It's what we keep showing up for.

Hello Mustie. I have a 1963 IH farmall Cub tractor. My Dad bought new for $2203.93. My Dad died in 1986 and the tractor set outside for the next 8 years when my Mom called me up and wanted to know if I the tractor. I did, my Mom said you need to come and get right now and all the equipment. So I did. Now I am retired and am working to restore it. A tree fell on when it was still at my Mom's. After I got it home my five year old and a friend of his used the front of it as a bow and arrow target. It is now Jan.16, 2019 and I am taking it apart. a couple of bolts have broke off. So watching your, You tube has helped me. The one where you used a self centering drill bit. Thank you for giving tips along the way.

Mustie--I have watched just about every one of your videos and have enjoyed all of them. Nothing rattles you and your work ethic is super. I am sure that you get a lot of self satisfaction on all the jobs where something that was broken or not running and after you worked on it--runs like new again. I know I do. Great job and 2 thumbs up for being respectful on the language and your audience. A lot of other youtuber's could learn from you. Keep up the great videos--thanks again and god bless ya. I agree with Mr. Large. Your pace is about as good as you could make it. This is memory time for me. Last time I helped dad rebuild a Farmall, I was about 17. That was 60 years ago. Tripped over your channel about a week ago, been watching ever since. Surprising how much I'm enjoying your work, and glad I found it.

I like the way you make your videos, sometimes we get to see things in detail and sometimes you skip through, mostly on repetetive stuff. You also invite people to come with ideas and feedback when you do creative stuff, and you listen, wich I think is great. I don't comment all the time but thats mostly because I don't have anything usefull to ad... :D So I would say, don't change a thing. Thank you for letting us in your garage Mustie.

Just right and what a pleasure...Dad and i had a farmall tricycle tractor was supposed to be a the superstar for small farms and we used it up until it was hauled away our barn was near collapsing and we had converted the old bean farm to a mobile home park so it was of little use...Dad had also been remiss at water versus antifreeze we gave it to a guy who promised to repair it... That was all we needed...looks like new block was doable...I watched the old girl towed away she was to valued to sell for use just restoration , legacy, that was enough which is why i like seeing your show you get it....

First cylinder head I ever did was a old motorcycle. I glued sandpaper to a piece of old marble floor tile I got for a buck and just dry sanded. I sanded it to 3000 grit. That was way too much. it just dumped coolant because it was so incredibly smooth, the gasket couldn't bite! That day I learned that you don't need to sand a cylinder head for six hours. 220 grit was all it needed. The cheap piece of faux marble did a damn good job as an improvised machinist block. I still use it today and it gets the job done.

While that would be neat...If I remember from my bug days, when you have to go that far down in on a 1500 or 1300 something really terrible happened and it used to be easier to just slap a different engine in. But soon, that's not going to be too much of an option if it hasn't started already for availability. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Threads in block should have been tapped clean prior to putting in bolts. Nothing like blowing oil galley crud further into the block! Should have been boiled out, etc...
@mustie1

they are not through holes and l dont want too tap them and make a loose fit, but if they were damaged or rusty l would have,

if l had the other parts l would have left them off, if l had to do it again l may leave them until later
@pappabob29
@pappabob29 7 лет назад
"Chasing" the threads with a tap doesn't cut them any bigger. It simply removes any debris, sludge, or rust if the hole goes into the water jacket. Allows the fastener to get a full thread without having to grind out all the latent debris. Just like the first time it was assembled.

I know you made this video series 5 or 6 years ago. I watched it then but I decided to watch the series again for a second time just in case I missed something. I also reviewed it because I enjoy your videos very much. The reason for that is simple. You do an excellent job of explaining what your doing step by step so even a dummy like me can understand it. All jokes aside, you do a great job of troubleshooting on your videos. As far as the pace of them you are spot on. I wouldn't change a thing. I have watched most all of your videos and enjoyed them all. I must say, you have come up some very interesting projects through the years. A lot of them I have run across and a lot that I have never seen before. That however is what makes your channel so interesting and enjoyable. Please don't change a thing. I also live in NH. and I understand the crusty rusty consequences we have to endure living in New England. With the addition of your new shop has made your videos that much more enjoyable. Keep up what your doing and thank you for your hard work. It has to be difficult to film what you do but you do make it look easy. Once again, a big NH. thank you.

I just watch and learn, love VW's I have own 3 bugs 67, 1 karmin Ghia 67. 1 fast back 1970 and my favorite, a 1961 split window panel van, it had waves crashing down painted all the way around it, I got it off a hippie for $500. I saw one of your videos where you said you don't really have time to respond to all your comments, so that's why I have never left a comment. but I just wanted to say I have gone all the way back to the beginning of your videos and have been watching them all 1 at a time 2 to 3 hours a day, I do not watch regular tv , just keep doing what your doing and we will keep watching. from Tucson Arizona and a New Mustie1 fan.

Just a hint and always a good practice...............before wash down and while cleaning your surfaces, take some taps and chase all your tread holes. Then finish cleaning and blowing things out. Oh I didn't see you do it or reference to doing it, but I am sure you used a straightedge to check the deck surface.

Just finished putting the head studs back in my C-113 engine. I'm no mechanic. Spent the good portion of the afternoon chasing and cleaning the threads on the holes and making sure that the threads on the bolts were clean. I was surprised in the difference with how some went in easy and some were quite a tight fit. From your removal and install of them this isn't all that unusual. There’s not a thing I would want you to change about your video presentations.... they are all deeply interesting and entertaining . I especially enjoy your narration or background chat..... its good to understand how you think your way through problems and come up with solutions.

The pace is fine. You take time to explain everything, and dont just fast forward through important content. I'm your age, and your videos are my favorite to watch. I have learned a lot! So much I didn't know for all these years!

Good general instruction for engine rebuild at a pace where it is easy to follow what is being done. Reminds me of what I learnt myself with my various car engines over several decades.

Watched with great interest as I have two projects in my barn to rebuild. One is a 1965 Corvette - 396 - 4 speed and the other is a 1929 Ford Pick-up. Thanks a lot.

I've been watching your videos on the farmall tractor over and over again. I have an 1945 farm av high crop with the c113 engine, Im thinking abou t a rebuild. The only hard part for me is the crank pulley, I really appreciate your video's. They are a BIG HELP!!

I enjoy all of your videos. The way you talk to us while you are working is great. I found this video to be very informative and would not recommend any changes in the time and detail you offer.

I am really enjoying your videos of rebuilding the A Farmall. I am in the process of rebuilding my dad's 1946 A and this has been very helpful for me. I also have another 1946 A that I had bought as a parts tractor but have decided that after I finish restoring Dad's tractor I'm going to rebuild the other one. Thanks...

I also agree that the video length is very good and just right. You speed through the mundane, but slow down and explain the intricacies of certain steps as you work. Thank you for that! In my early twenties, some forty years ago, I work with an older gentleman is a mechanic working on ilo's and other Factory equipment to move things around as well. After four decades, it's refreshing to watch somebody else get their hands dirty and crack their Knuckles once in awhile with the wrong wrench. Fortunately, your tools and equipment are top-notch and you don't need knuckle Busters because that's all you have all available in your tool kit. In short, I'm really enjoying what your site is doing for me and what I might be willing to do in my spare time later to make a few bucks. One thing that's really cool about your site and how are you express a good versus bad option, how much is my time worth and what are the parts going to cost? Even more important, what's it worth on the market place after I'm done working with it? Thank you so much for these excellent tutorials!

I think you got the pace and the mix right. Works for me. You inspired me to pull that dodgy oil seal out of my rideon mower and work on it. Its great to watch you work and confirm i did it right or wrong when i taught myself. Thank you.

I have worked on many different engines, but watching your videos has given me new tricks new ideas and the best part got me back into working on things... You make it fun, informative, and honest. On a side note showed my brother you videos today and now he is hooked.... Keep on doing it the way you are doing it..... I know this is older video but I am going through watching some of the old stuff to see all the things you have worked on Thanks again for every video you do.

I really have enjoyed the "vibe" of your vids. I love "wrenching" on stuff and use that for evening stress relief. After work and when things settle down at home, there is nothing so peaceful as spending time troubleshooting and bringing machines, tools, and crusty equipment back to life. You provide a sense of nostalgia too when time wasn't in such demand and you could hang out with friends and fix stuff. Thanks for talking just the right amount and not teaching "down" to me as I hang out with you, because I can predict almost every plan of attack you make...which is one of the great joys of your channel. Thanks

I think the pace is just right. I know this is an olset of films, however I've only just found them. You seem to be VERY experienced in the mechanics of small and larger engines. The detail is sufficient for the likes of me, -diesels from 5 litres to 1.2 litres on mowers, telehandler, generator, chipper etc. to undertake most repairs. Its reassuring to see the parts in bits, and the way your treat each part as a separate job, so the complete rebuild does not become overpowering. This goes for all the films I've watched in the last couple of weeks. Keep up the good work, and give the smaller guy confidence in the machinery and how it works. Thank you. If there is something, that I have not yet seen in your comprehensive series, its how hydrailc valves, such as priority steering valves work.

Whatever little I know about engines I learned here. Fixing a lawnmower, snowblower,etc. was beyond my ability. Time is the killer. Knowledge and the inspiration that you and others provide is the real key.( A place to do the work and some tools doesn't hurt either) Thank you again for the time you take to educate and encourage

Following orders: Pace is just fine. A little late to the show here, so allow me to elaborate. My grandfather sold IH for decades in their farm equipment division, and he owned a Cub. As a result, I've sort'a had getting one of these on my mind. Last week I bought a Farmall A, and thank you - I'm not sure what I'm getting into, but this video sure is a great help. What a confidence builder! Subscribed!!
