This declassified 1944 black and white Combat Bulletin produced by the United States Army Pictorial Service of the Signal Corps for the U.S. War Department (#30 in a series) offers glimpses of successful Allied efforts during World War II, covering British Royal Air Force campaigns and United States ground operations in Europe (TRT: 11:06).
Title cards: “This Film Is Restricted” and “Produced by Army Pictorial Service, Signal Corps” (0:08). Title: “E.T.O. Activities in European Theatre of Operations” (0:37). Title: “R.A.F. Sinks “Tirpitz.” A map shows an attack range extending from England to Tromso in northern Norway (0:44). A British four-engined strategic bomber, an Avro Lancaster, takes off from a runway. A formation of Lancasters in flight (0:55). Aerial photography of a smokescreen in effect. The German battleship Tirpitz fires guns from long range (1:12). Another smokescreen, then clearer conditions offer an opportunity (2:01). Direct hits on the Tirpitz are seen from above in footage from R.A.F. camera planes (2:25). Title: “Front Line Steel Production.” A French front converges on a point in Differdange in Luxembourg. Steel factories along the Moselle River (3:27). A tram carries mine workers. Mine cars loaded with rocks. Inside a foundry, pouring molten steel from bull ladles. A block of molten steel is formed into a beam, placed on a conveyor belt, and hauled away (3:52). Title: “Bombed Belgium Rail Networks.” A map illustrates railroad lines running between Courtrai, Malines, Hasselt, and Louvain (5:08). R.A.F. films survey damage to Belgian rail centers. Destroyed train tracks, decimated boxcars at Malines (5:17). Hasselt shows similarly extensive damage. Courtai’s warehouses in ruins (5:50). Marshaling yards at Couvain show twisted rails and derailed trains (6:44). Title: “Allied Armies Face Rain and Snow.” A map indicates Aachen in Belgium, Metz and Belfort in France (7:21). General Dwight D. Eisenhower, wearing a heavy coat, boards a Jeep while inspecting troops. Soldiers along the roadside salute in the rain. Eisenhower reviews smiling troops (7:32). Eisenhower shakes hands (8:14). Flood conditions show swelling rivers, waterlogged roads (8:19). A plane is pushed through the flood (8:47). Boats of the 90th division prepare boats and rafts to cross the Moselle (9:10). A farmhouse, a tank, rainy conditions, muddy roads. An overturned truck is reclaimed from along a muddy roadside, towed by a tank. Film ends abruptly (10:08).
The German battleship Tirpitz was the second of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany’s navy (or Kriegsmarine) in the WWII era. It was named for Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, and was launched in 1938. It bombarded Allied positions on the island of Spitsbergen in 1943, but was subsequently attacked by British mini-submarines and the 1944 air raids depicted in this film.

In addition to the US Army's combat and civil engineers, were American civilian contractors, from oil, steel and other heavy industries following close behind advancing troops. In some instances, those American contractors had contacts among the European industrial companies, and used their influence to thwart sabotage plans of the retreating Axis forces. While some of this activity was a bit nefarious (i.e. IBM, GM and Ford still communicating with their German subsidiaries AFTER the US entered the war) much of it bootstrapped post-war reconstruction. My friend's grandfather was a petroleum engineer with Standard Oil in New Jersey, and was shipped over just before the end of the war, to evaluate the prospects of restarting production at some of the German synthetic fuel plants throughout Europe. Unfortunately, most of the facilities were either too badly damaged, or were too isolated to supply with the necessary materials, due to damaged transport infrastructure. He did bring back a ton (actually several tons) of technical materials, blueprints, etc. Much of the material was hidden by German engineers, to prevent the destruction of all their hard work.

Nov. 1944 to May 1945 doesn't seem that long now because we know how it turned out. Hearing news of progress like this at home might have made you think it would only be a matter of weeks. But if you were there and had to fight through the long winter, it probably seemed forever.

The soldiers in the field were not concerned with the industry cranking out tanks, ships and aircraft , that is 20/20 hindsight . The guys on the front line were not comforted by this at all . They thought we could lose this battle and this war . The same in the pacific war for 2 years the Japanese and the Allies were on almost equal strength (think Iron bottom sound) none of our boys thought that we had them in the bag !

Interesting remark about the Tirpitz firing its main guns during the air attack. Did they have anti aircraft shells? Elevation must have been a problem.
@EgoAlters
@EgoAlters 3 года назад
They did develop special fuzes for the 38 CM SKC/34 after the earlier raids in the year, but elevation would have prevented them from hitting the heavy bombers. Might have been a different story, had the RAF opted to attack with dive/torpedo bombers again.

the main guns could elevate to 30 degrees. which works out to around 18000ft at 6 miles. Service ceiling for a Lancaster is around 21,000 ft but the attack was made at around 14,000 ft. so the guns were a threat.

Would love to see more about liberated areas as they went from occupied to liberated and started recovering. Especially about advance airbases - long range bombers had to continue flying out of England due to supply logistics, that I get, but their escort fighters would have been able to form up with the bombers from bases much closer to the German homeland, allowing them to swap out the need for extreme range with increased time over target. It doesn't say much for the mapmaking skills of the Army Pictorial Service when they cannot name the countries correctly, by calling the affected countries like the UK and the Netherlands after just one constituent part. If the USA was treated the same way, it would just be called Texas, for example.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RU-vid users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.

Genocide on Tirpitz
@tinymonster9762
@tinymonster9762 3 года назад
Genocide is the 42,500 camps and ghettos that Nazi Germany set up between 1933 and 1945 where 15-20 million people were murdered. Tirpitz crew were lost in battle, like Bismark, Hood and Yamato.
@Ah01
@Ah01 Год назад
The actual sinking had no military significance whatsoever, since Tirpitz had already been rendered a more or less useless floating fortress, british knew that and besides that the allies had no intention to invade the northern Norway anyway.. Was just a question of prestige, killing as many enemies as possible and a total revenge, just like the night time aerial raids on german cities. Waste of effort that could have been used elsewhere.
@2ID_Doc
@2ID_Doc 12 дней назад
It was a hazard to Allied shipping going to St. Petersburg to supply the Soviet efforts in pursuing war against the Germans. The Tirpitz had the ability to hit Allied ships, they needed to stay close to shore to avoid ice floes that far north. According to a WWII I knew the sink rate of Allied ships was on the order of over 25%, either from subs, naval bombardement or icebergs. The water was so cold even with a life jacket, hypothermia would set in in minutes. In the 1980s he was presented with a medal by the Soviet Union for his efforts in WWII.
@Ah01
@Ah01 12 дней назад
@@2ID_Doc Tirpitz was a floating battery & barrack at Hakøya, Tromssa with very limited mobility and one of the main turrets shattered from it`s ball bearings before it eventually was sunk, and brits knew that. Crippled, it was no fleet in being in autumn 44. So, it was purely a matter of prestige at that stage for RAF.
