My first car as a high school kid in 1973 was a '46. I drove that thing everywhere, and I mean everywhere. It had 5:28 gears and was only good for around a 45 mph. top end but it was a mountain goat off road. It's the only Willy's I didn't keep. Fun times.
It's all so fun when you don't belittle a vehicle that worked perfectly and still works perfectly oh what is that, 70 years later...hm, isn't that strange, it still works almost perfect 70 years later.
My dad was a military man and when he found a 1947 Willys jeep for sale ... he traded an old Yamaha 750SpecialII for it. Man was it a tank! We towed it with us to go deer hunting and no hill was too steep or river too deep. Made for toughness. Push button start and had a 327 small block engine swap. BEAST! Traded it later on for a Ford Mustang Cobra II (just like Farrah's on Charlies Angels with with blue stripes)!! Good trade, great cars both
Justin L They built stuff to last back then. CJ or not, that was still military grade bumper to bumper. The government wouldn’t put up with unreliability back then.
My son is special needs and he loves classic jeeps like that one he says they don't make them like that anymore but wishes they would with no microprocessors in them just pure mechanics and with character and simplicity.
I learned how to drive when I was 13 on a south Alabama farm in my Grandfather’s 53 Willy. I have been trying to recapture that magic ever since. No vehicle I have ever owned has come close.
Old automobiles although I don't see them as old... simply hurt by time and younger judgmental modernist people who never except anything past 2010, but ""older automobiles"" have a charm and set of gift that comes with it. With a modern car, you get it and you just think "alright, this is it I am out on the road in my new car", with an older automobile and I mean anywhere from 60 horsepower (36 mph) in a tonneau 1901 to 400 horsepower in a 1958 Mercury, both very very well for each time era..you get an offer of beauty, enjoyment, and many smiles all for so much cheaper yet higher quality than modern cars that have no glory and beauty to it.
With these computer on wheels they make today. I have more fun in something like that then the 70,000 Ram that has left me stranded a couple of times lol
0:17 Starter button placed most perfect; given it's intended use in combat situations. Many years ago I acquired a 1943 (supposedly) CJ2A with split windshield. It had a title that said it had been assembled from spare parts at the Red River Arsenal. It had the standard 4 cylinder engine, shifter for high and low range and a third stick to select four wheel drive. I had it torn down preparing to repair the cracked bell housing and got another job in a distant city. I called a friend and just gave it to him as it sat. Years later he wrote me and told me he had it running and titled. I often wonder where that old beast ended up.
First vehicle I ever owned was a '57 Willys CJ5 with the F-head four banger, point it any direction and it would drive over it or through it without hesitation! Always wanted a classic flatty like this though.
Honestly they should give everyone who wants to get DL a drive in one of these bad boys ....if you cant drive suvh simole car you dont deserve to drive modern electronically aided vehicle
Wow you have a very nice jeep.I have a '47 CJ 2-A that is in good condition, rebuilt engine ford brakes as well as other minor repairs. However I've got a lot of more major repairs to deal with.
Then work out like the healthy soldiers did in Korea. 73 years old. Don't make up invisible problems with a automobile that isn't brand new and see it for it's positives. People keep talking about 45 miles per hour being slow, and I'm still left wondering...how? People should be greatful they get to their destination on solid smooth road. My grandparents certainly didn't, my parents were around the first when they were little to have smooth roads.
These vehicles diligently performed their duties in the Indian Army as well. Jeeps , or presently their Indian version are used even now in the Army. A Jeep which carried an anti tank gun in the Battle of Longewalan, a landmark combat in 1971 is preserved in a battle museum near the site.
