I used an S10 rear axle on this 1950 Chevrolet 3100 truck to achieve a narrow rearend so I could fit 22X12 wheels out back. I had to notch the bed and install inner tubs (humps) inside the bed. I also installed a wood bed kit and notched it out for the tubs. All components I used were purchased at The Truck Shop and are listed below.
REAR INNER WHEEL HOUSING (HUMP) 58-59 FLEETSIDE LH & RH 58-06327
STAMPED (CHEVROLET) TAILGATE 47-53 47-10503
OAK BED WOOD KIT 47-50 SHORTBED 47-10710
POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL BED STRIPS 47-50 SHORTBED 47-10729
BED CROSS SILL FRONT OF BED 47-50, 47-10901
BED CROSS SILL CENTER OF BED 47-50, 47-10902

Please do more vids! This definitely helped me understand how to put my bed together. When I got my truck it was all missing, so this helps a lot!

Excellent video and just in time for me! It confirmed a lot of what I’ve had to figure out in the last week of working on my bed. I bought the truck with only the original sides, a new front bolted on, and a new rear sill. That’s it! No fenders, no tailgate, plywood bed, homemade front and mid mounts, no center sills or front sill and a botched repair at the bottom of one rear stake pocket that I had to cut out and repair.. Feels like I have LMC on speed dial! Anyways, I’m finally to the point of cutting in my tubs and they were 4 1/4” wide supposedly made for this truck but they sit too tall and I already noticed interference of running into the stainless strip. With there only being around 2 1/4” from the bed to the rear part of the frame anyways I already marked mine to 2 1/2” wide and was just about to cut. Unfortunately the rolled flange is about 3” too low. So low I had to cut about 12” out of the middle to follow the hump of the frame staying around a 1/4” above it and I was going to add back in the 3/4” flange I cut off to add rigidity back to the tub but now now I’m thinking about just cutting off the entire bottom 3” and adding the flange back at the proper height to set the planks on like yours. The plank should still be close to 2” wide at the tub but I’d love for it to be sitting on something. More work but best to do it now. I also made the mistake of buying polished stainless angle strips and not buying angle strip “covers” so I had to scribe the top of the old mostly rotted away ones to locate the new ones and remove them. I’m probably going to bolt the new ones on with small stainless hardware as I obviously don’t want to weld onto them. I got scared they sent the wrong angle strips as they are too short by an 1 1/2” or so. Then your video confirmed they do stop short of the front like I figured. Thanks for that! Too bad it’s going to look silly or appear to be a botched install when not the same length as the polished strips. The only thing that is different on mine is it being the later 53 with 8 boards and I’m adding the optional wear strip for the rear, plus with the wood blocks and rubber pads on back order I’m using thick rubber washers and 2” x 2” square stock with a hole drilled through it. I’m also trying to find a clear coat that will add huge depth of glass like looks to the oak. Any recommendations? I know I can’t get it into the grooves as then the strips won’t fit properly so that part will just be regular stuff like you used. I would rather not cover the strips in anything but I’m not 100% opposed to it either. After watching videos on poured epoxy kitchen counter tops (some with built in LED lighting!) I’m wondering how that would look? You obviously know the cost involved in these beds and I don’t want a huge oops on my shoulders but man I’d love to see that super deep look and LEDS sounds intriguing. Thanks again!!

That two part epoxy should work pretty well! I don’t know how well it stands up to constant UV rays but it sounds like your truck will be so nice that you’ll probably keep it garaged anyway! Thanks

Good video well done explaining on what you’ve done and why. Good plan, good job. I really like your truck. I’m starting on my 1981 square body step-side. And trying to put the widest rear tires without having to narrow the reared. Again great job.

Seam sealer will be applied over the seam and the spot welds before the truck is painted, creating a nice bead over the whole seam. Good observation! Thanks for watching and commenting.

I may have been wrong in the video about the exact year 😬 but those are 58-59 fleetside inner wheel housing from The Truck And Car Shop, part number 58-06327. Hope this helps!

How did you keep your bedsides from warping when welding in the tubs? I had to remove my bed rail and reweld it on and now I have a warp.
@gillrodshop
@gillrodshop Год назад
I used the same technique as panel replacement and that is moving around tack welding, holding the trigger for about 1/2 to 3/4 of a second. I use a heavier gauge welding wire than most (.030) and set my Lincoln 135 to the max heat and about 60% wire speed, hot and fast tacks.
