Billy Strings demos a refinished 1950 Martin D-28. The guitar is mic'ed with an Ear Trumpet Labs Edwina. Find out more at www.eartrumpetlabs.com cartervintage.com/collections... Videos are produced by Jon Roncolato
There’s two types of people hearing this. Those motivated to quit and those motivated to practice. The ones that say they’re quitting aren’t really. So let’s get together and jam. 😎
The finess in his picking to allow a separation of notes with that guitar in that tuning is really extraordinary. So difficult to produce that clarity and keep this progression from running together
If there was one thing that could happen in life to help me right now is to sit down with billy and just sit and hear him speak to that guitar for a little
I always stop to watch anything of Billy's (as well as some other favourites). This one is totally "out of left field"... very different from the music I have become accustomed to. It really reached in and gave my innards a twist... a very moving piece. Thank you so much. Liked & Subscribed.
I don't think Martin offered a sunburst in 1950 and the description does say it was refinished. You can buy a new Martin with sunburst finish but I wonder what year it became an option from factory. I dunno. Anybody?
That D28 is so resonate which is what i want in any guitar. With such a deep, crisp bass. You can tell though that the action might be too low though with the low E bottoming out. But that could ve an easy fix.
You’re right, but he did drop down to the low D so it’ll have less tension already. Billy is also a pretty heavy player with his technique, so he might just be giving it a little too much sauce 😉
I've got a Takamine its old it rings like a bell is Quiere how great it sounds i just got a Washburn in the old D series Martin style love playing them both but now looking at buying a Martin i don't need to be a star its the fun an freand ship when playing thats how you say meat an potatoes of it all your music will inspire us all its whit great musicians do thanks mun your super awesome 👌
This guy was born to play. His God given talent is insane. His speed and accuracy is amazing considering he doesn't appear to have the economy of movement of a Tony Rice or Noam Pikelny. His fingers seem to fly effortlessly from note to note. I'd love to know what's streaming from his brain to his fingers. We get an inking of it from his very distinctive facial expressions. I love him, I love his playing and I love that I can't find a single ounce of ego anywhere.
Patrick B I agree. That’s why the two Blake/Rice albums are a must. Just two dudes (mostly) on guitars. I wish there were more bluegrass type albums that left out mandolin and banjo.
Sounds better than the Preston Thompson he normally plays if you ask me. Great instrument with so much character and depth to the sound. I bet they sold this guitar pretty quickly after this video was posted
That chord he slides up to reminds me of early 70s prog rock. I think it's cool to mix that in with the genre of the rest of the song. I also think it's cool how he then improvises a break from that cord.
Nun Ya come on man make up your own jokes. Does it really make you feel good to get likes from some old ass recycled overused joke? If it does you may need to do some soul searching. Sad
In my experience, scalloped bracing doesn't guarantee a wonderful guitar, nor does age - wood density and stiffness varies from one guitar to the next, for example. Over the years, I've owned several Martin dreadnoughts. A Martin 'Custom 15' herringbone reissue was nothing special, a rather subdued and unresponsive guitar, as was a 1945 D-28 I played at a dealer's but didn't buy. A 1968 D-28 (standard bracing) I bought from a friend was a much better instrument. The best way to find a good dreadnought is in my view to go to a dealer who has plenty in stock, play the lot, and let your ears decide. It's a guitar for you, no-one else. Once you've chosen, only then check out whether it's got a Sitka or Adirondack top, scalloped bracing or whatever. Don't turn down a re-topped guitar either - they can sound amazing.
@@gam1471 I totally agree I have played a lot of boutique guitars and many martins vintage and newer and I have an old 1980 yairi Alvarez and that’s just the guitar for me it makes me want to play and I am always able to create new ideas on it my wife calls the guitar my mistress Mrs.Alvarez funny thing though my wife she bought her for me
I have a 79 Ibanez Dreadnought that I bought new that is a copy of that guitar model, same sunburst, same pick guard and very close to the same tone but is in bad need of a refret after a lot of years of hard playing.
andybaldman so dumb, no one is born with greater musical talent or gifts then others. You put in hard work and dedicate your life to guitar you will sound as a good no matter what genre
@@MyBodyWash You think everyone's born equal, huh? Try studying guitar for 20 years, and we'll see if you're half as good as he was at 15. People have different innate abilities, and they aren't all equal. Some people can't do math, or fix cars, or speak other languages, or write poetry, no matter how hard you practice. You have to have aptitude, AND practice, to get to this level. Practice alone won't do it. Try it (or just study with a master like Billy for some time) and you'll see. I won't be able to convince you here, it's something you have to learn for yourself through experience.
Just left Carter Vintage about an hour ago. If you love anything with strings that's the place to go, they have a massive variety of instruments. I'd love there if they'd let me!
