Hello Darlings! In this weeks video I spent the week trying out and thoroughly enjoying some 1940's and 1950's breakfast recipes! Breakfast can easily become mundane when you always eat the same old thing, so it was nice to spice up the breakfast game and try out some new ideas! I will be adding these into my breakfast rotations because yummmoo they were good! Let me know if you try any of these out, I would love to hear your thoughts!
Lots of love,
Sage Xx
Recipes Below!
Tomato and Egg on Fried Bread:
4 Tomatoes
2 Thick Slices of Bread
2 Eggs
2 or 3 ozs. Beef Dripping
Salt and Pepper
Method:
Stalk, wipe and halve the tomatoes. Fry them gently till they are tender, in half an ounce of dripping. Melt the remainder of the dripping in another pan. Add the bread and fry it slowly until it is beginning to brown, turning it over once or twice. When the bread is ready, lift it on to a hot dish and top it with the fried tomatoes. Sprinkle these with pepper and salt and keep the tomatoes on toast warm, while the eggs are frying. Then top each tomato toast with a fried egg.
For a change, the fried egg can be served on the fried bread without the tomatoes; or the fried tomatoes can be served alone on the fried bread.
Griddle Cakes:
1 1/4 cups sifted enriched flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons salad oil or melted shortening or bacon fat
Sift flour with baking powder, sugar, and salt. Combine egg, milk, and shortening. Add to dry ingredients, stirring just till flour is moistened. Batter will be lumpy. Bake on ungreased griddle.
When underside of griddle cakes are nicely browned, sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of washed and drained blueberries over each cake. Turn and brown. Makes 6 to 8 cakes.
Baked Apples:
Select large, good quality baking apples. Wash; remove core. Place in baking pan. In centre of each apple, place 1 to 2 tablespoons brown or granulated sugar and 1/2 teaspoon butter.
Pour 1 cup water around apples and bake uncovered in moderate oven (375 F / 190 C) for 45 - 60 minutes or until tender. Baste apples several times while they are baking.
Apple centres may be filled with chopped dates, raisins, mincemeat, or cranberries.
Fritter Batter:
1 1/3 cups sifted enriched flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup milk
1 well-beaten egg
Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and pepper if desired. Blend milk and egg; add gradually to dry ingredients. Stir in desired fruit, vegetable, or meat. Drop from tablespoon into deep, hot fat (365 - 375 F / 185 - 190 C) Fry 2 to 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
Use 1 1/2 cups drained; whole kernel corn. Serve fritters with maple syrup.
(I served my corn fritters with avocado and kewpie mayonnaise)
Crispy-crumb Eggs:
6 slices bacon, chopped
1 cup soft bread crumbs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper
5 well-beaten eggs
Fry bacon till crisp; remove bacon.
Add bread crumbs to drippings and heat until crumbs are crisp and brown; remove crumbs.
Add milk and seasonings to eggs; scramble in bacon drippings. When nearly set, add crumbs and bacon. Makes 4 servings.

When I was a child in the 50's we lived on a farm. My grandpa had a huge garden and we had some chickens so we had eggs with fried tomatoes, corn fritters ( though my Mom always used Bisquick instead of making it from scratch), and a dish Mom called scrambled mess - which was similar to your fluffy eggs. She would scramble the eggs with ham or sausage or bacon - whatever she had, potatoes, onions , green peppers or any combo of those she had available, and just before serving put some chedder cheese on top. However, we had this for supper, not breakfast. Served with sliced tomatoes and dill pickles.

Congratulations on your engagement. I wish you both much happiness. I'm 56 and my mom has that Betty Crocker cookbook. I've always loved how it's got great basics in it. I enjoy your channel ma'am. I wish young ladies really knew just how much was expected from previous generations. Knowing the career and financial limitations even my mother had needs to be taught to kids today so they're thankful for those freedoms they have now.

My youngest introduced me to this channel. She is 15 and loves the hair tutorials and cooking. I myself have always loved everything about the 1930's-1940's since I was a kid, so perhaps she was 'infected' on one of my cleaning days when I tend to turn on some Vera Lynn or Dina shore. Either way we have even more we get to do together each time a new video comes up.

Wonderful. 1950's and 1960's are for me the best ages. All is perfect: music, movies, fashion, cartoons, products, commercials, life style at all. Only cars I prefer in the ages 1920 - 1950.

I have one of the same cookbooks she has. My grandma gave it to my family because she used to bake Christmas cookies from it so my sister and I use her mom’s, my great grandma’s, old kitchen aid mixer and make those same cookies every year and give them to our grandma. The cookies do take a while, but are very much worth it in the end. I do recommend.

@scarlettehowell189 Год назад
@@goodvibes2042 3 ¼ cup all-purpose flour Ingredients 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 tablespoon milk 2 ½ teaspoon vanilla ¼ teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel Directions In medium mixing bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In large mixing bowl beat butter on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add sugar. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl as necessary. Beat in egg, milk, vanilla, and lemon peel. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour. Divide dough in half. Cover and chill 1 hour or until easy to handle. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Roll half the dough at a time, between sheets of waxed paper, to 1/4-inch thickness, sprinkling bottom sheet of waxed paper with flour if cookie dough sticks. Cut with desired cutters (if dough becomes too soft, return to refrigerator). Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are barely light brown. Transfer to wire rack to cool. Makes about 2-1/2 dozen (2-1/2- to 3-1/2-inch) cookies.

Love hearing your "Hello Darlings" as know to settle in to visit with you! You reminded me of childhood cooking in the the '50s. We used bacon grease so much & velveeta cheese (which really isn't a cheese but so yummy) all the time. My Dad's speciality was scrambled eggs fried in bacon grease with cut up bacon, diced tomatoes, chopped green peppers & velveeta cheese. We called it Lewy-Lewy after his name. Served with peanut butter toast. Happy memories! Your other 2 recipes look yummy! TU, Sage! 🥰

However, ever since I saw this video I’ve been eating my toast/eggs/tomatoes with a fork and knife as shown here and I swear it just changed my life. Yes! Or unsweetened grass-fed yogurt which tastes similar to sour cream, and apple butter for a pioneer Southern American touch? 😋 (for anyone who doesn't know, apple butter is very brown and spreadable, it looks a bit like vegemite: apples cooked down with cinnamon and possibly other sweet spices. Very old fashioned & good!)

Hello Sage! This was the soonest video I could find. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how very thankful I am that I found your channel. I am much more of a younger person than others that watch these videos (11 to be exact), but I wanted to let you know that I have struggled and struggled to find what I liked. It is REALLY difficult to find a style at my age without being completely modernized just like every single person I see. I feel that of course many people have a different style other than what is trending, but I just think there isn't as much originality anymore like back then. But one day it had hit me, that I found my forever style which for me is the 1950's. and it's all because you opened my imagination more and made me think about the fact that there is more to style than what's trending. And I truly believe that some people are afraid to admit that they need some inspiration from someone that sees beyond the cover of the book about style types. So thank you so very much for showing me who I am! (I don't know if you do this but could you shout me out in the next video please? Thank you!)

I love collecting old cookbooks, isn't the egg on toast w tomato recipe so similiar to our now avocado toast , toast w mashed avacado, slice of tomato sometimes and sunnyside or poached egg on top so yummy. Thank you for the recipes. Love your channel! Greetings from Illinois USA

Between the recipes, your sweet voice, and the music, this was a delightful video. The corn fritters brought back memories of my grandma in her kitchen. Thank you

I was a kid in the 50's and our breakfast consisted of weetbix and milk. Even though we lived on a farm, no cooked breakfast before school.

Fried tomatoes and egg on toast is so tasty. I like to put mashed avocado and everything bagel seasoning on mine. 🙂

@@erose1320Oh do I have the snack for you... Stauffer's mac n cheese (or a similar mostly bland mac n cheese option) with sliced dill pickles mixed in Orr hollow out a large whole dill pickle and stuff it with the mac n cheese I call it mac n pickle it's something I started doing in middle school and everybody thinks it's weird lol

Omg I'm born '95 I love the 50s and 60s time but the breakfast is a shock because I made that tomatoe egg toast for breakfast when I was a kid and never knew it was actually a 40s breakfast ❤❤❤
