Hello Darlings! This weeks video is another fun little workout, except this time I am following the great Jack LaLanne! He had a fitness show that started in 1951 and continued for 34 years! He was a major fitness and nutrition guru and taught exercises specific to Homemakers. I hope you enjoy and as always let me know if you try this out at home!
Lots of love,
Sage xx

I feel like exercising nowadays is sooo intense. Like we feel as if our exercise routines always have to be these intense routines that make you sweat bullets and make it so you can’t walk properly the next day from soreness. But many people just can’t reasonably sustain that kind of intensity due to lack of time, physical ability, etc. That’s why I think so many people are discouraged from working out. We don’t realize that exercising doesn’t necessarily have to be excruciating. Just moving our bodies simply like this is great for us!

I agree with you! I hate exercising because I hate feeling pain or soreness the next day. I also have back problems, so there are some exercises I can't do without risking to get hurt. This workout seems perfect to stay in shape while avoiding soreness!

I agree. I was taking ballet classes with children and getting really frustrated by being chronically sore. I stopped and just started practicing moves here and there throughout the day, and now I’m able to do things I couldn’t while I was in class. My balance and coordination has improved a lot.

Yesterday, I worked out for the first time in ages. I just did some light exercises like the ones in the video but today by abs are so sore! It feels like I did 500 crunches but I only did a 20 second plank!

I absolutely agree, and what I’m about to say is not discrediting. I simply want to share. I LOVE the pain and soreness. Maybe I’m a masochist, but it makes me feel alive. It reminds me that I’m built of muscle and strong.

I remember my mom exercising with Jack Lalane back in the 60’s when I was a little girl. She would also walk 18 holes of golf twice a week and was in terrific shape well into her 90’s. She passed away last year at 94. Jack was an excellent wellness coach long before it was a thing.

Sue sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I remember my late father turned me on to Jack Lalane years ago (wish I had kept up with it) and if I remember correctly when Jack was trying to get everyone to work out he faced resistance. He tried to get early football teams to lift weights but the coaches rejected this saying it would get their teams musclebound. He also was an early advocate for women exercising and again met with resistance. He truly was a pioneer ahead of his time.

Born in 1950s and grew up in Southern California. I never knew Jack LaLanne was known internationally. When we were kids my older sister and I watched and laughingly followed Jack's exercises. But some of his exercise and nutritional advice sunk in because no one else was giving it at the time. It helped me to appreciate the importance of strength and fitness for good health and I started taking vitamin supplements, which I continue to this day.

Love this, thank you. I'm an overweight mum of 3. This is simple, gentle, and I can do it while the big kids are getting ready for school. My 2.5 year old loves it. She says 'lady, exercise!' And drags a chair into the middle of the living room. This little bit of exercise perks me up and improves my mood, and I'm definitely aiming to do it every day.

I've been a student of mid-century culture for a long time, partly for work reasons, and partly because I believe it is good for us to know something about our culture and where we came from. You know what they say about those who forget the past, right? Anyway, I find it very interesting to know something about the world our grandparents lived in, how they dressed, ate, acted, and how they faced problems in their day. They weren't perfect, but they did the best they could with what they knew. So I believe we are to build on what they did right, and learn from their mistakes. I think you are doing a fine service to the world with your series. People should know how terrific and wise someone like Jack Lalane was, and the workout you shared showed his simpler, yet still effective approach to physical fitness. What I'm trying to say is that it's not a super intense, high-velocity workout, rather a workout designed for everyday people to get them moving, toned up a little, and maybe feeling better about themselves. I find much of the music and culture of that era was the same way. If you were going to sing a song, for example, you'd find a nice Irving Berlin song, get it into a key that suited your voice, and off you go. It wasn't high tessitura music and it wasn't supposed to be. Rather instead it was something that was much simpler yet it conveyed musicality and most of all, warmth. A warmth that maybe you don't see in today's music. Jack LaLane had warmth, in addition to superior knowledge and wisdom about the body. That wisdom kept him fit and sharp throughout his entire life, a fit and vigorous life that only ended at 96 years of age when he caught pneumonia. That warmth is something that has drawn me toward mid-century culture, and I'll bet you see it, too. Thank you!

It's so interesting to see the routines back in the day. 🧐 A lot of these exercises are still used today, they're just modified to be harder by using weights and/or resistance bands. This is definitely useful for someone that can't do high impact workouts or is just getting back into a routine. Mr. Lalanne would've been proud of your lovely smile and energy, Sage! 😁 I laughed at the bit with the ankles. As someone who is plus sized, and working on their weight not only to fit vintage clothing better and be able to get actual authentic vintage pieces in my wardrobe - but for my overall health as well - this is so wonderful. I really needed something to ease me into working out again as my body just isn't used to it like it used to be in grade school and every workout I attempt is extremely tiring, painful, and can be really discouraging to me. Can't wait to start this as part of my daily routine. Edit: Breakfast made & eaten - with smaller portion sizes, and healthier foods. Workout completed with very few issues and I don't feel overly exhausted! All before 8am as well - which is a first for me in a very very long time - so happy! I remember growing up in the 50s and my mother having.Jack LaLanne on every morning! I wonder if we can pull up some of his videos on RU-vid I’d like to follow his exercise plans now that I’m in my 60s and can’t do all the crazy stuff these people do today. Thanks for the video it was a great flashback and a good exercise plan to follow for today!

I have chronic health issues and have gained weight, but I have physical limitations that keep me from strenuous exercising. This was perfect!! Sometimes the classics are just the best

I wish you'd make more of these vintage exercise videos, Sage! They're just enough to be gentle but quite effective. Your cheerful smiles are a big part of the benefits, as well as something about your attitude that calmly suggesrs it's all very doable and fun (along with Lalanne's encouragements)! One thing I wish I could do is to increase the repetitions for each exercise by about double. I feel like just when I'm starting to feel the positive effects, then Lalanne stops the exercise. I understand why, since he probably didn't want his viewers to get too tired or discouraged, but maybe you could edit the next video to double each exercise? For this one, I guess I'll just have to stop and replay each one. The organ music is just wonderful, by the way! 🎶

As a senior citizen just getting back into exercising after decades of neglect, I really enjoyed doing this routine with you! I've been watching the few Jack LaLanne workouts available on YT, and have a DVD of more workouts ordered. Yes, I grew up when he was originally on TV.
