I’m just beginning my journey and I’m finding that starting with undergarments is making my modern clothes look much more vintage. Starting from scratch is overwhelming but I’m taking it one item at a time. I did order two pairs of expensive reproduction shoes, one pump from American duchess and one pair of walking oxfords from Memery. They’re expensive, but handmade with real leather and will last for decades with proper care. I’m trying to be sustainable while doing this! Also, wearing pantyhose makes all the difference! Nobody and I mean NOBODY went out bare-legged until the late 60’s/early 70’s. It was unusual even then.

I’m starting to (try) to dress in a vintage 50s style, but my difference is I lean towards the greaser style! I love to wear leather jackets and jeans and my converse shoes, sometimes I wear boots, and if I were a boy I’d definitely have greaser hair but since I have long hair i just try to deal with it! My style is inspired by “The Outsiders”, a.k.a. my favorite book and movie ever. So I don’t always dress as a stereotypical greaser, I also dress in that sort of style they had in the movie. I love oldies, and I can’t wait till I have even more true style! :D

When Lock Down began in 2020, I had shoulder-length hair, and couldn't do much with it, so I tied it up in a bandana. I went out grocery shopping, and some people said I looked like Rosie the Riveter. I was wearing jeans and a short sleeved plaid shirt, and I guess I did look like her! So I thought it would be fun to wear Forties style clothes. I didn't have any skirts, but wore high waisted trousers, and started curling my hair the way Rachel Maksy showed me how on one of her videos. Mom thought I looked cute, and has been such an encouragement to me. I still can't get to Thrift Shops, because of COVID, but I can get some cute ideas from my own closet. Thanks so much for all your tips, too, Sage! Stay safe! ~Janet in Canada

Matching was always in style for ladies, Princess Diana had the clutch bag, the hat, the shoes, the dress, the jewelry, she was the most photographed woman in the world, somewhere along the way designers decided not to have the shoes and clutch bag match, to unmatch everything, I hate it. Straight hair became the only look too, it is pretty at times, but women with body in their hair flat iron and burn the heck out of their beautiful locks to pull it pin straight, curls are coming back finally!!

@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 don’t forget that with extant garments, there’s a lot of survivorship bias. Smaller clothes are the ones that tend to last longer, because they’re only worn for a shorter amount of time, and being so small, can’t be passed on to family to them wear to shreds. But larger sizes are out there. That being said, I personally prefer to sew my own anyway. Finding new ready made in my era, 1890-1910, is near impossible for straight sizes, let alone plus sizes. And I’d never wear an actual antique, even if it fit. Though occasionally you luck out and the style comes back into fashion and you can get a couple of blouses and jumpers without having to make them yourself.

Another fashion research You can do: Ask Your grandparents... *no, seriously* My grandparents have already passed away but I look at old photos from family albums for references, too, because I'm aiming for the authentic feel but at the same time realistic. Bonus is that You have certain connection with Your family and where You came from as a result. I learned a lot about my grandparents and their happiest memories just by looking at their photos through stories from my mom, uncles and aunt. People only truly be dead when You forget about them. When You talk about them it is like a remembrance and that's sweet

I am way late to the party with this comment but I get a lot of inspiration from Katherine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, and actually many other stars like Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardiner, Audrey Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich who didn't wear much make up and often rocked trousers rather than skirts when they weren't "working". There are photos of some of their fabulous casual outfits that ooze style without being "girly" per se if you google their name and "casual" or "trousers" etc.

Since i got into studying about body types, learning I'm a Romantic body type; the 1950s is the best decade to dress. I've been finding shapes of vintage pieces that really work on my figure but i also love 18th century hairstyles, chokers and corsets. My absolute true love is the Italian Renaissance, when i watched Ever After for the first time i just swooned over their dresses, jewelry and hair accessories. So i like using Renaissance jewelry with low square cut tops that remind me of that cut in their dresses., mixing it with modern stuff. As well as finding tops with Renaissance art printed on as well. Now im trying to find trudor corset tops to go with cute skinny jeans. 😄

I love this! I made a gradual transition to vintage style (1950's) over the last two years or so. I have to say that I buy fashioned garments from vintage designers and they cost me anywhere from 50 to 150 Euros per piece. My personal favourites are belted pencil dresses because they accentuate my hourglass-shaped body type. I also love A-line skirts paired with blouses, and I love putting belts over those too. I even switched to back seam tights instead of regular clear ones. The next step is finding a perfect 1950's long hairstyle (I want to keep my hair waist-length as it is now), with hot curlers and headbands.
@ventalexandria7727
@ventalexandria7727 3 года назад
The seam back pantyhose can be hard to find or very expensive. I learned that when the war came these stockings weren't in production because the factories had to make war equipment instead so the ladies would draw a line on the back of their legs and use regular stockings over it.
@dominikar4969
@dominikar4969 3 года назад
@@ventalexandria7727 Oh yes, I recall hearing something like that too. Also, the use of stockings with garter belts was so common because tights with a crotch were a luxury item reserved for upper-class women. And you're right, back-seam tights are hard to come by (I take good care of all of mine), especially nude ones with a black back seam, I only have one pair of those. Black ones are more common, and then the most common type are crotch-less stockings. But those are designed to be lingerie, so they're less convenient and comfortable for everyday wear.
@carolsedgwick5749
@carolsedgwick5749 2 года назад
@@dominikar4969 I don't know about upper-class women, but the internet (and memory) tells me pantyhose were invented in 1959 and became popular when the miniskirt made garterbelts impractical. I started out with a garterbelt & nylons, but when my hemlines climbed, I bought pantyhose.

You have given some really helpful ways to get started. I know next to nothing about choosing pieces that work for the style/era you are going for, but I would think staying fairly neutral in colors and pattern would be the easiest way to go. That way you can add scarves and other accessories to change your look without having to have a ton of pieces. Probably also avoiding stereotype fashions from a certain era like felt poodle skirts if you are drawn to the 1950’s. In other words, research actual styles and don’t just depend on what you see on tv shows like Happy Days. Check out fashion from other countries during your chosen time. I could be totally wrong, but these ideas just popped into my head.

It's hard to pick an era growing up in the 80s and being a young very girl in the 70s everything was polyester and I was allergic so Little House on the Prairie saved my life. My Mother learned how to sew and I wore Prairie dresses and pinafore dresses. I loved going into the church store and buying gloves and dresses from the 50s and playing dress up. In the 80s I finally started to really fit into my dressup clothes and I fell more in love with the 50s and wore pillbox hats to church. The church ladies loved this and gave me some of the best stuff. Then I found Molly Ringwald and Dirty Dancing. My issue now is that I have gained a lot of weight and now I wear sweatpants and baggy shirts and feel dull as dishwater. I have since discovered Gatsby and all the shows you mentioned including Downtown Abbey, Bomb girls, Call the Midwife and so much more. And I want to start to play again. It's funny that as a child I didn't care about people thinking that I was crazy and now that I am 40 I feel like I have lost my confidence in clothes and my identity. I still do my hair for big events like my grandmother who loved that I was copying her since her hair was to thin to do up before she passed.

@sarahperkins I am the same. I was 13 years old in 1986 and my favorite teacher and 4-H leader told me that I was any old soul. I didn't understand at the time standing there in my rolled up jeans and thrifted saddle oxfords but I sure do now. I caught a glimpse of myself the other day and was startled to see what I've become. That ends today. I'm gonna get my sass back and my Amazon cart has some lovely pretties just for me. After 4 decades of everyone else it's time for me again. Good luck on your journey

@Kj Sanford 3 years seems WAY too long, hun! At our age, we should have a bit of savings and some credit. This would be a perfect time to use it. I've been where you are (heaviest weight ever, probably right now! Lol) and none of it seems to be going anywhere (I'm a few years older than the ladies here=menopause). But if you do like Nordstrom Rack, they'll have nice dress skirts from Calvin Kline that I know will fit me. I think their highest size is a 14/XL in store. Theyll have wide leg pants and Loft will have capri dress pants that will work, too. All machine wash. Just don't buy their watches. Waste of money. Numbers fell off! Look for sales or odd colors. I like a salmon colored pant. If you keep to a set of colors that go together, buying will be easier. Mine are greens, dark blues, and of course reds/pinks. Patterns, you can buy say a cream shirt (like dress shirt) and wear it with light pants, jeans, any dress pants of skirt, or pick colors from the pattern and use them for pant/shoe colors. Such as green skinnies (if you're going modern or just feel like it), a neutral skirt, or the pink capri dress pants (got a lot of wear out of those!). You could of course wear black pants, too. When all my shirts have the same color palette, I never have to worry about what to wear. I also rotate the dress shirts (long sleeves), pants, and so on...you can start with the shoes. NR is easy with returns. I think they may charge you a little to ship back, maybe it's Macy's...? Macy's took a sizable order from me and didn't tell me they were having issues to ship first. Over a month later, I canceled the order. So, they're going under for this type of thing. They also have a lot of things that work with vintage stuff and are often cheaper. Think polka dot blouses. Be careful with buttons if you're big all up front like me! Haha. Buttons may not be your friend! You may need to go with a stretchier fabric for this problem. Only buy stuff you really love. For example, leather loafers. Or suede/leather moccasins/driving shoes. They also have the very klunky heels l, which I think of as old lady gear and I hate how it looks on my feet. But they could go with a vintage look. I also like kitten heels. Not sure if the style is 50s, but a pointy toe animal print would work. I'm a 10, and may have to size up to 10.5 or 11 because of the point. They were cheap, go with anything and dress you up right away. I can't do Keds. I'd use Vans instead. Not sure if the time frame would technically work, but they're very cute with the jeans of the time. Plus, they're fairly cheap and literally last for YEARS! My first pair are 4 or 5 years old. If you do Vans, note the sizes are unisex. A 10 could go 9 or 8.5 maybe. If you get suede, any shoe repair place can clean them like new. Use silicone spray on them (outside, please, don't breathe it. Also keep in mind that the spray might be flammable, probably, and the overstay would be slippery when it gets wet, say on a metal balcony). I find Coach to be a reliable size. I have pink moccs that are 4-5 years old. Still intact. Not cheap, over 100.00, but they're well made. Worth it. Thrift stores can have Manolos and such for only a few bucks. A 10 would be a 41 in Italy. They also tend to be narrow (Gucci heels are, too). I've found cute true vintage jewelry and nice repros on etsy/eBay. Type in Sputnik /sunburst style jewelry...a true vintage broch only cost me 20 bucks! And it's got a chain loop, too! Make sure they're in your country FIRST. You don't want a 55.00+ customs fee you didn't know about later on. Etsy will make whatever you want, of course. Heartmycloset has some gorgeous stuff. Not horribly expensive in the States. Not for bespoke (custom/handmade to order). I haven't bought here yet, as I want to lose a bunch of weight first. Haha You can only alter down so much. Look at the bad reviews first. Look at how their clothes work on real women using a cell phone in bad lighting for photos. See if the bad reviews have any possible merit. Avoid anyone who won't take a return. Or problems with returns. Now is the perfect time to try a red lip, a new hairstyle or anything else. It's winter and a pandemic. Nobody is going to SEE it. Jmo.

40? You're a baby, lol :) I'd LOVE to be 40 again, haha. Did you get your hormones checked? It might have something to do with it. I noticed that myself, along with the confidence thing, and being spacey/stupid...I also don't sleep! Ha. Try to get out more. Maybe adopt or foster a dog so you HAVE TO get out and move around. When I quit drinking 10 years ago, I found doing things for others helped. There might be a place near you that helps women get better jobs by better dressing and such. Maybe that's an option, to help them? I guarantee it will help you :) This will pass either way. Try not to rush into cosmetic surgery, starvation diets, or hormone therapy. Cosmetic surgery (had full-body lipo from Dr. David Teplica in Chicago out of St. Joseph's hospital on Sheridan road) is painful like you wouldn't believe. It isn't cheap. And it's not permanent. I had full body lipo, boob lift, and double chin lipo. I was kind of unconscious for like 5 days, lol. But if you eat the same junk, it comes right back over time. You still have to eat less and exercise, sorry :) Starvation diets. Got down to 117. Pretty much didn't eat. Didn't last and my guy friends said I looked like I'd been to a concentration camp. I'm 5'5 btw. Not everyone looks the same at different times of their life. My 117 doesn't look like yours :) It was still mostly flab, because I hate exercise. Ha. And hormones, including the pill give you cancer. So, no. Myself and 3 other women I knew came up precancerous on the pill. Nope for me :) Just wait it out, I hear lots of women are much happier after. It was way worse in our early 20s, I dreamed about it and it was awful, lol

What about a gold tone or bronze tone bag? Remi and Reed have several vegan leather reversible ones. There's no pockets, but it's easy to see everything. Their metal tone ones hide the wear. Be careful with bedbugs or lice/fleas on anything used. Look them over very carefully. Bedbugs, you'll see dots of blood, sometimes in a triangle pattern. They can also get into anything wood or upholstered. They dislike metal frames and can't climb them.

I'd suggest looking anyone you consider up online. Read the worst reviews first. See if there's any merit. There shouldn't be any trouble with shipping or returns. I've only dealt with Etsy and Ebay so far. Sometimes you find nice things at Nordstrom Rack. I've never had a problem buying or returning with them. Macy's has been problematic. I bought a bunch of stuff, they weren't clear on if a tee shirt was juniors or women's (it looks awful if you're a grown woman wearing clothes made for very young teens, you can tell of they're odd sizing numbers if it doesn't say=pants being a 31 or a dress being a 7, for example...)...then a good part of the order was back shipped and they never bothered to tell me anything. I finally said, "Just forget it." And that was a lot of money they lost for dumb issues. This is probably why they're in trouble financially. Wondee if someone isn't shorting them TO fail...? I've bought from Modcloth. I like their stuff way better on the 14 year old model than everything they sent. Shoes with very toxic smells, too small/narrow clothing, not well made...sent all of it back. You can get stuff made on etsy. Just make sure they're in your country. Customs will be very very expensive otherwise. You may not know how much until later. That's no-go for me... And they should offer returns.

For me the main challenge of wearing vintage style clothes is where I live. I'm in the Midwest US which has very long, very cold winters. There's not a whole lot out there about what women back then wore in the freezing cold of a Minnesotan February, and the stuff most people think of just isn't practical for the weather.
