Same 😣 I would have bought those any day, always in my local vintage places but you can never get a full set. Not like Jess to paint over something actually vintage
They were fake and mismatched I honestly thought it was dirty before she did the up close shot also nothing prevents her from painting them again, no hard to make floral designs
I think those kind of door knobs were actually more 80s. I remember them well. And I think for her purposes the gold worked better and on a budget it would have been expensive to buy replacement knobs.
Just because something looks old doesnt make it vintage. They look more from the 80s or 90s, to be real vintage itd need to be from like the early 60s and that's pushing it,because vintage is more 50s than anything
Wait, whut?!! That apartment should have looked pristine when you moved IN. I hope the landlord is giving you a huge credit for all the work he should have done BEFORE you arrived!
I agree, but anywhere in CA the rental market is tight. If she had complained about the condition of the unit there were probably a dozen people ready to rent it as is. I hope she got something in writing from the landlord allowing her to make changes.
As someone who had a similar experience with renting: Hahahahahahahaha. But seriously- that's wishful thinking. Landlords don't care. If you have something to say about it, there's a renter out there who doesn't. Guess who's getting the place?
SatineMoisant in the house I live in the people here before my family didn’t the landlord about all these problems in our house and we have SO many problems here, our landlords live in Hawaii
Everyone is mentioning that the floral knobs shouldn’t be changed, know I agree because they looked amazing up close, but when the floral print was seen from afar it seriously looked like a granny’s home!
When I was 5 years old, I won a talent contest by singing "Mr. Sandman." This was in 1955, so I remember the style so well! You have done a lovely job!
This is too cute! I’m more of a “witches tower in the woods” kinda gal, but I can appreciate the work put in to make your space look 1950’s era. P.S. love the hair
me personally was not a fan of fifties decor, much prefer the victorian/edwardian style of home decor but I have to say you've done a fab job here, the kitchen is just beautiful! I think I might be converted to fifties decor a bit more now.
Hahaha ironically enough, same here! Most of the 1950s home decor styles look tacky to me so I had to find that sweet-spot where it's 1950s style but not tacky and the Mid-Century Modern style is it! ♡
This just made me realize that my brother and his wife have a very 50’s house. 😂 Also, to those who can afford it, SMEG is a great kitchen appliance brand that is very 50s and comes in those cherry red and pastel blue colours. 🥰
@•S w e e t• •H o n e y• Well, if they're watching the video and using it as a visual comparison to their own home, then yes, one can determine that the house is not authentic mid-century.
What a good video! I was born in the 50s, I've lived it and this is an authentic look despite the modern tv. In fact, my family was one of the first to have a tv on our block. Im originally from Baltimore and our tv was next to the "ice box" in the eat in kitchen. We rolled it into the living room in the evening. But the rabbit ears, complete with aluminum foil, had better reception in the kitchen area. Thanks for the video, i really enjoyed it.
Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel. This too cute. Right away I saw in you what the old folks call, "you have an old soul girl". You would have fit right on in back in the 50's. I see it on you..its all over you. You did a wonderful job on your apt. I love it! You should study design. People will pay you to design their homes, office, whatever. Your good. Good luck on your new life and place! God bless you sweetpea.✨🐈🌷🌼🎉🍲
So many things i love about this video but the biggest things are that you completely transformed this place on your own and you also showed inexpensive ways to make the most out of your space. This just proves that you dont need to be rich to do things that you want. There are always ways to meet your aesthetic all while being budget friendly. Thank you for this! Love your new home!
You're right. It's definitely called baseboards. Crown, meaning something at the very top, goes up around the ceiling. They are no plain like baseboards. They beautiful moldings that add demention to the space between the ceiling and the walls.
Thank you for that info, actually. I just called non-crown molding strips "molding". Now I know what it is by my floor. I don't know what it is across the middle-ish of my dining room. I didn't ever live in a nice enough place to have any kind of molding until I moved where I am a few years ago, so I am not an expert at all.
Bridget- the trim around your dining room is most likely Chair Rail. Decorative way to keep the backs of the chairs from hitting and damaging the wall. :)
@@bridgettmahoney1390 It's OK Bridgett, if you don't know about something the you tubers will let you know in the comments. We just pass on information to you. It's a great way to find out about things. 👍👵
Jess!! Since you’re in LA now, I’d recommended going to King Richards Antiques in Whittier! It’s about 30ish minutes away from LA and it’s huuuge! You’ll love it(if you haven’t been there already) 💕
I love what you did! I can’t believe the apartment let you paint, remove fixtures, and vinyl wrap the appliances! I was getting so inspired then remember my apartment doesn’t let me do any of that 😂
Jaid0r I’m with you. I would have loved the flowers when they were new (not afraid of the granny look) but if they weren’t all pristine, it wouldn’t have worked.
@@satanssandwich5389 I agree. My home is totally 60s and 70s down to my silverware. It was built in 1974 and alot of it was original and what wasnt, Ive fixed up to be period perfect. She should have gone thrifting for some cheaper and more authentic era accurate furniture and style. Would have been more exciting. Not that it isn't cute. :^)
Brandy Jay thank you for actually understanding the concept! You are spot on. The whole “ vintage “ thing is getting muddied and distorted by the lack of actual understanding of a time period or era...the apartment in the video looks lovely but it annoys me that a self proclaimed and clearly influential ( to impressionable audience) vintage expert, didn’t buy second hand . It’s environmentally ( if you’re into that and we all should be) so much better and old furniture lasts longer is period correct and doesn’t support cheap nasty factory labour. Agh It’s so simple It also looks so so much better. Key items from thrift stores saves money and the environment . Why wouldn’t you? Also there’s a big big difference as I’m sure you’d agree between vintage and antique. Let’s keep our vintage passion true and not let history get murkier by incorrect info being passed along Ps your house sounds absolutely gorgeous and you’ve obviously put a tonne of love and care into restoring it to be as good as it was when built That’s exactly how it should be - If you can’t afford a George Nelson clock don’t get a cheap nasty made in China knock off that kinda sorta maybe reminds you a little of one if you squint .... wait . One will come along... I’m glad there’s people out there like you keeping true history alive x
Your apartment looks like it’s out of a vintage catalog. I kept having to remind myself that this wasn’t a vintage video, this was your actual apartment makeover. Great job, it looks so beautiful
Hey Guys I found most of these items on amazon and they're all within price range( low budget) so I really recommend these items. The chandelier I am definitely getting
You may not be interested, but when a person has a real affinity for an era that they seemingly have no experience with, it's likely because you lived a past life during that period. How do I know this? Long story short, I'm 56 and had an unexplained affinity for all things 1920's and 1930's my entire life. No idea why. I'm just drawn to it and when I see old pictures or movies on TV I just relax and go "Ahhhh". My current house is decorated in a very 1920's look. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I had a psychic reading from Psychic Violetta (RU-vid)(very gifted lady). I asked about past lives, knowing that whatever she said I would have to take with a grain of salt since who can prove it anyway? Well, she said I was a flapper girl in the 20's and 30's and was blonde and very pretty and all the men wanted me but just used me up and threw me away. I only wanted to find love, but none of them wanted to know me; only use me. I then spent my life alone.... I was astounded because she just explained the exact same life I lived in the 1990's in this life. In the 1990's, in my 30's, I had died my hair blonde, went out every night dancing, (just as she said I did in the 1920's and 30's) and looked for love, but only found men who lied to me to use me and then threw me away. They lied about being married. I had one "boyfriend" who up and got married one weekend after spending his last night of "freedom" with me. I had no idea he had a fiance as he had been sleeping with me for about 3 months. It was all just a game to those men. I then have been alone ever since because I don't trust men. This happened to me so much back then because I was blessed to have been very pretty in my 30's....men sought me out like crazy. (Sorry, for the sob story) but after Violetta told me about this past life in the 20's and 30's, I told her how I had lived that very life in the 1990's, and that I had also had an odd nostalgia and affinity for 1920's and 1930's decorating...she told me that obsessions with other eras are sure signs that we lived a lifetime during that time and hence we have nostalgia for that time. My part in having to relive the situation in the 90's was that I was trusting bad men when my higher self was trying to tell me to run, but I didn't listen. So I had to live the lifetime again. Guess what? I failed in the 1990's again, because I turned a blind eye to the signs that told me these men weren't worth spending my time with. I pretended to myself that those men were better men than they actually were, just because I was in puppy love. So I very well might have to relive it the next time around until I make the right decisions ;( Just watching this one video of you, you likely would have lived a very entrepreneurial life has a young lady in the 1950's just like you are today, likely with the very same hairstyle you choose to wear today. Whatever big story lines are going on in your life today, are likely the story lines you lived in the 1950's. Oh, one other thing... I was so obsessed with flapper girls that I even wore my hair for a time in the 90's in the style of Louise Brooks; short hair, ending with a curl at the front... That is the same exact hair that Violetta described me having in the 1920's and 30's...
Cindy That’s EXACTLY what I thought when I read the RU-vid description. She definitely had a past life in that era. Your story was saddening, yet inspiring. Once you acknowledge these past life patterns, they become easier not to repeat, also weakening the karma. I wish you wellness, happiness and love for the remainder of this life. Remember we create our reality, so embody true love, release your engrained past life story, and find self love. In true paradoxical fashion, I guarantee once you do, you’ll run in to a genuine love in this life. We are NOT our past life karma. Good luck Cindy! ♥️
So I’ve been to Paris twice, the first time I didn’t get to go to Versailles but the second time I did and idk why but it made me cry. The grounds seemed familiar to me, even writing this I’m tearing up... I’ve always had a thing for the 18th century and honestly a thing for Paris. Reading this just confirmed a feeling in my tummy.
Selina Caballero I just went to Versailles about two weeks ago and felt the same thing. I had such a calling to it. I felt so happy and at home there. Definitely my favorite place I’ve ever been and I can’t wait to go back.
My mom was born in 1953, she and I love this style of decor. She, my dad, and I lived in a vintage home, literally vintage home, with vintage furniture. I remember the health department had to take all the paint off our walls (lead based paint and being a child it can cause fatal happenings, and you can be an adult and be affected, too.) But we repainted and it was still fun to see how people lived back then. You really know your stuff! 😊👍
I'm a late 40s early 50s decorator, it's funny how theres such a difference between the early 50s and late 50s! Super cute video, I hope you so show a bedroom and bathroom fix! Amazing vinyl wrap idea, cant believe it never occurred to me!
Your apartment looks great and it was cool to see you doing the light installation. Tiny bathrooms can be fun. Mine is a wee little 5x8 feet and I made it into an art nouveau haven.
Wow, Bravo to Jessica for her 50's vibe. She is definitely an old soul like my daughter. One thing I would do is, move the cart with the glasses over to the left, so it can be seen more, instead of hidden behind the chair. I'm glad she chose Midcentury style which I love also. I'm also glad that she found a way to liven up her apartment in unique ways because when you rent, landlords don't want you to make to many changes.
The decor reminds me of The Sims, in a good way!. Its amazing to see what is back in style, a lot of people use this furniture now! you did an amazing job with your space!!!
I agree - as in modern 2019 chain store.. and it has nothing to do with the comment that mcm is so popular.... it’s modern not modernist- and it’s like that vos everything IS modern from modern chain stores.
Omg! Can you do a vlog or q/a on first time living on your own? Like answering questions on if you work, how are you able to afford an apartment in LA? For others who still live at home but are interested in maybe doing the same!
This is my first time seeing one of her videos but, judging by the number of subscribers and the quality of the video, I would say that YT is her job and she can afford the apartment (whether she is renting or bought it) because of the number of views she gets. Plus it looks like she has another channel. If you're not shy and have a passion for something, grab that phone or camera and start putting out content. You might be able to make YT a full-time job someday or at least have it pay for gas & groceries. Good luck!!!💕
OMGosh, I can't believe that you painted those knobs. They were soooo vintage already. I love the red in the kitchen, although the table is cute you needed to find a 1940's table and chairs also in red and or white. You can find them in any antique store. I also love the vintage style. I have a grey 1940's table and grey and pink chairs. Love your style, soooo cute!
Me watching the before: hey that’s actually pretty decent Me watching the ACTUAL before: OH GOSH THAT LOOKS HORRIBLE! Lol You really changed up that apartment! I especially loved the dining area!
What I love is how clean and effortless you make it all seem, you never get any paint on you, you never seem exacerbated or frustrated like most would be doing that kind of grunt work. Gingerly and neatly putting everything in it's perfect place, like you did it all in a single afternoon lol.
You could put a simple big vintage print in the bathroom. I have some Norman Rockwell in mine.... just tiny hints of things. Also mid century hardware, or soap dispensers etc...?
Just started watching your videos and I must admit, I really like your appreciation for ventage era of the 50s. For a person so young you do it well. Keep up the good work of a timeless & simple era & thank you for educating me.
I think my favorites were the ceiling light in the dining room and the wrap for the dishwasher and the fridge. I have seen it on pinterest, but have never had the courage to do it! and from someone who lived some of my life in the 50's bravo! I really love looking at the old interior decorating books of the different eras and I would have to say, the 50's over most others is my favorite!
Great work dear !!! I love it !!! Si clean and precise !!! Congrats !!! I was born in 59 ... And I remember My mom had mint green fridge and cabinets ... Which was more of the style . But I love it anyway !!!
ᴊᴢᴀ Just go buy some. I’m pretty sure hers is bought as well. 😆 If it really is hers, then it’s amazing to see but it sure looks like a clip-on ponytail.
DISCLAIMER NONE OF THE LINKS LISTED ARE AFFILIATE! -I just love decorating and fixing up houses (-i actually use to stage houses for open houses and im living vicariously through you 😄 Okay, for a small bathroom the little stands that go above the toilet are a lifesaver for storage! They make plain wire ones or fancy wood ones with doors. You can get ones that hang on the wall or the ones with legs that you just literally stand up behind potty. Oh! And if you have a super large mirror, go to lowes or home depot and they have FOAM crown molding thats cheap and absolutely beautiful and you just caulk it to the mirror and go around all sides and it makes it look like a huge fancy framed mirror... let me get you some links to show what i mean. Heres mirror: she might have used wood crown molding but foam is a lot cheaper and looks just the same. Lowes will cut it for free, and shhh its a secret 😉 but my husband works at lowes so let me know and i can get you a discount lol www.momtastic.com/diy/128900-how-to-frame-a-bathroom-mirror/#/slide/1 Heres the behind toilet stand. I tried to find one in gold to match the gold metal in your dining room but im sure somewhere else has it in gold. www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-3-Shelf-Bathroom-Over-the-Toilet-Space-Saver-with-Liner-Satin-Nickel/270311266 this would look amazing above potty or on any wall and has the gold metal frame! I think itll tie the rooms together fabulously lol www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Mid-Century-3-Tier-Metal-Wall-Shelf-Bathroom-Towel-bar/293136226346?hash=item444047d82a:g:yWQAAOSwkqZcuNSj:sc:FedExHomeDelivery!77995!US!-1&redirect=mobile THIS ONE IS GORGEOUS! It says vintage but I'm a novice so i dont know if it rly is vintage and if so idk which decade. Its smaller than the others so it could be used above potty or on a different wall for extra extra storage www.etsy.com/listing/189368807/gold-damask-curio-with-glass-door?ref=related-1 Heres one that i think looks a lil more vintage-y lol www.amazon.com/Home-Basics-Space-Saver-Bathroom/dp/B0052SWLZC/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=behind+toilet+stand&qid=1563403942&s=gateway&sr=8-9 Heres a fancy one but it might not be good for a small small bathroom www.amazon.com/Giantex-Bathroom-Freestanding-Spacesaver-Improvements/dp/B078NRQQ17/ref=sr_1_49?keywords=behind+toilet+stand&qid=1563403942&s=gateway&sr=8-49 Okay and this lil thing is AMAZING! you can slide it between potty and sink cabinet, thats if your potty is next to your sink. And you can use it next to icebox if theres a gap. My bathroom is rly small and the vanity/cabinet has no drawers so i bought this to slide in between vanity and toilet and its been amazing. It holds way more than it looks like it would. www.amazon.com/Jerry-Maggie-Organizer-Accessory-Livingroom/dp/B07H5VYQ6Z/ref=sr_1_51?keywords=behind+toilet+stand&qid=1563403942&s=gateway&sr=8-51 Heres one that has cabinet/doors www.amazon.com/Zenna-Home-9119W-Collection-Spacesaver/dp/B004EPXKUO/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=behind+toilet+stand&qid=1563403942&s=gateway&sr=8-8 I don't think wicker was popular until the 70s, right? But i did find this: www.etsy.com/listing/702347546/vintage-wicker-hanging-shelf?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=1950+over+toilet+storage&ref=sr_gallery-1-47&organic_search_click=1&frs=1 These are gorgeous www.etsy.com/listing/651252776/window-cabinetmedicine-cabinetdisplay?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=over+the+toilet+storage&ref=sr_gallery-1-22&frs=1 Oh and you cant forget the spice rack, it could totally work for bathroom storage, you can hang wash cloths/towels on the top ledge. Or i suppose you could indeed use it for spices in kitchen 😉 regardless, its super cute and i think it matches the rest of your home www.etsy.com/listing/651252776/window-cabinetmedicine-cabinetdisplay?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=over+the+toilet+storage&ref=sr_gallery-1-22&frs=1
I just looked to see if there is another place to get one of the over the toilet storages, and for everyone else who does not have access to a walmart: ikea has a similar one, in the dynan series
