#classictruckrescue #classictrucks #classictruckranch WARNING! There is a cantankerous old guy in this video dropping a couple S-Bombs, so not really all that family-friendly. I cut out as much as I could...sorry. That said, this is by far the BIGGEST truck we have rescued to date.

My father would have loved that truck old truck. GMC built tough rigs back in the day those made good logging trucks and farm trucks. Grandfather had GMC's on the farm in Sequim in the 40's 50's when he replaced the Ford AA's. The Fords were cheap and easy to rebuild but GM's were tough heavy duty trucks and the running gear couldn't be beat. I learned to drive truck on those old twin sticks it's an art to drive those especially old Detroit's you had to keep them wound up and shift just right and don't miss a gear. It was amazing how popular the Detroit 671 engines were even in other truck brands all the way into the eighties.

As a retired independent trucker (owner operator) of 47 years (and a 20 yr "veteran" of drag racing)... and schooled (literally) on 2 cycle GM Diesels (Detroit Diesel, as of 1965)... I must tell you that it really saddens me that you let this rare jewel slip out of your hands. I love your videos, and your growing collection of "Jimmy's"..... but, can't understand why you would let that 6-71N powered 900, go like that !??!! Shame on You !! lol Also can't understand why you were shooting ether into "her", especially after you initially got it running.... ??? Very nasty stuff, that ether, and... especially on the 2 cycles, can do "very bad things" to piston tops.... you were fortunate, also... that after sitting SO long, that when it initially fired.... that it didn't go to wide open throttle (stuck, rack) with the ether, and suck the oil out of those triple oil bath air cleaners and have a "run away". Rule number 1.... for you future remembrance IF you ever "rescue" another 2 stoke powered "Jimmy"..... on initial fire up.... remove the air cleaner(s) and have a FLAT piece of wood (at least.. 3/4" thick), or a FLAT piece of Steel... that is large enough to cover the air intake tube / pipe to the roots blower, so that IF it does "take off" on you.... you can QUICKLY lay it over the air intake pipe and choke off the air flow. IF... you have a "run away" (overspeed) situation.... choking off the air is the ONLY way you will get it shut down..... pulling the fuel shut off, in that situation.... will NOT shut the engine down, because it is burning lube oil which is coming in with the air flow through the intake ports in the cylinder liners. Many times, it is Not Uncommon... when a "jimmy" has been sitting for "x" number of years, the oil seals on the "drive end" of the rotor shafts in the blower, will have deteriorated and the air flow will suck the pressurized lube oil, in with the air flow.... which will almost instantly result in an overspeed / runaway condition, in which the engine will continue to increase in rpms until it literally will self destruct.... usually somewhere between 4,400 & 5,000 rpms..... if it isn't shut down, as described above. One other tid bit for you..... they Do NOT "like" to be Idled.... for anything more than a few minutes at a time..... Extended idling causes the internal cylinder temp to drop too much, resulting in... insufficient fuel burn which in turn can result in glazing the cylinder walls...... well, long story - short.... extended idling of 2 cycle "jimmy's" does NOT contribute to long term longevity of them, and neither does running them, at "low" rpms...... I "built" and operated my V12's (series 71, same series as what was in your 900) between a "low" of 2,000 & up to 2,800 rpms..... and put Well Over One and a quarter million miles on each of them, without a major overhaul. I hope your lovely wife and "partner in crime" & best friend..... will "get her way.... with another 900 series, like your 51, or newer 950D / 960, etc, etc...... Next time... KEEP IT !!....... IF, you can even Find another... especially in THAT good of shape. God Bless you Both.... and keep the videos coming.... I really look forward to them.. PS: If you ever have any questions regarding ANY of the 2 cycle GM Diesels.... regardless of series, 53, 71, 92 or 110.... feel free to ask and I Will reply to you on here. Take Care... and keep rescuing those beloved "Jimmies"..... gas, or... diesel..... but you Do "NEED" at least ONE, two stoke in your growing collection. : ) Hmmmmmmmm....... still can't figure out WHY you would EVER let that "jewel" of a 900 Series, go !?????!! tsk tsk..... hope your really feeling..... Guilty !!..... If Not..... you should be !! lol : ) Take Care, and Take Care of Each Other.... first & foremost !!

+2Stroke Diesel Power Wow...well, first let me say that you most-definitely, absolutely, positively know a LOT more about old diesels than I do, (Or ever will). Yes, I do regret selling Grandpa, the 900-Series Jimmy Diesel. Unfortunately, I was not in any position to keep that truck when I 'Rescued" it. That Video is several years old. When it was made, I had just gone through a bad breakup with my wife, moved out of our huge riverfront home and into a 5th-wheel trailer that had been hit by a log and exposed to the weather and seriously water-damaged. I completely renovated the trailer and was living in my Mother's back yard until I could get a place of my own. The big Diesel truck was a bit-much for my 70+ year old Mom's driveway (Which you can see it in in the video). I also could not keep it where I had my pickups stored because it was just too big. I did not have very many trucks at that time. I ONLY got that truck running, cleaned up and driving because it was going to be scrapped by the people I got it from. It was blocking the entrance to a shop full of restored model t's. The previous owner of the diesel and the model t's had passed away and his children wanted to sell them. So, yes, I do regret not keeping that truck, but I did my best to "Rescue" it, and get it to a good home. Trust me, with the 25-acre property we are moving onto right now, which I will own instead of renting, If I ever come across another, I will keep it. I hope that enlightenment about the situation will help you to understand why I might have been silly enough to let that truck go. All THAT said, I do understand the things you said about bringing old diesels back to life and do value that information. I am not experienced with diesels and have never claimed to be. I can see where it would be very beneficial to be able to contact a friend with your knowledge prior to firing up one of these rigs. So if you would be so good as to send your contact info to rick@classictruckrescue.com it would be greatly appreciated. If you are also an expert on 1959 Chevy 2-ton trucks, please do not watch the video titled "Homer Rocks". Just skip that one. You don't want to watch it. I mean, thank you for watching, and please do continue to watch, just don't watch THAT one.....because I have to get back to work....-Rick +2Stroke Diesel Power Wow...well, first let me say that you most-definitely, absolutely, positively know a LOT more about old diesels than I do, (Or ever will). If you learn how to properly run the rack (adjust the mechanical fuel injection linkage) you can prevent runaways... i.e., run the rack before starting a Detroit that's been sitting for years... ;^)

I love how this ole boy is washing this truck one last time, even though it's raining. I'm sure he feels like he's saying goodbye to an old friend. P. S., Another good thing about living in the Pacific Northwest is the fact that Les Schwab was founded in Oregon, and so this guy could probably get tires for this truck at a cheap price.

Wow, reminds me of the ol 59 my pops had back in the 70'-80's it had a dump bed, was a total beast. There was a box labeled flairs in it when he bought it and stayed in the truck for years until he sold it. When he passed and the property was sold in 2015 i was cleaning up the shop and found the box ... It wasn't road flairs but full of 50+ year old blasting caps 😂 no telling how many times I welded and tossed that box around over the years, called the local sheriff and had them dispose of them lol

Hello tRick and Jamey, that truck is definitely one of a kind . in case you're wondering that's probably a 53 series GM diesel they came and different configurations in line for inline 6 v4 v6 ,v12,etc. The name was later change to detroit diesel it still remain division of GM they also BUilt Allison automatic transmissins I'm not sure if they are both still affiliated with GM yet, but both are still very popular, That 53 series is a 2 stroke engine, that's why it revs up so fast and sounds so loud. After the 53 series GM introduced the 71 series ,Then the silver 92 and in 1995 Detroit introduced the first Electronic controlled engine called the 60 series which was there first 4 stroke( other than that piece of junk 5.7 litre in the 80s they stuck in auto mobiles. That 53 series was problem about 200 HP, The inline 6/71 series was 238 HP stock with no turbo and about 285 HP with a turbo, The 8v71 was 318 HP. Then the big dog Silver 92 came out it was440 HP(8v92) . The first 60 series was 365hp without the cruise control and 425 HP with it. Now a days Detroit are coming out of the factory at or above 600hp. Us truck drivers had a nickname for the 2 strokes we called them screaming Detroit's!!! Thanks again ,Lord Bless.

You are welcome, I don't know much about the old GMC but I am a heavy equipment/At. mechanic and truck driver so I've been around Detroit,CAT Cummins,MACK , Deere, IH, Etc all my life, So I'm glad I could help,I guess we all have our thing, mine happens to be a dirty old diesel( especially Detroit's) Those 2 strokes were state of the art at the time, Perkins Diesel and Duets both tried to build a 2 stroke but Detroit held a patten on the blower and scavenging cycle, so none every got their engine tuned in. Another interesting fact is many hotrodders use that exact same GM blower on their rods,So when you hear or see of a car or truck with a GM blower chances are that blower started out on top,or the side of a SCREAMIN DETRIOT!!!

scott scottswart440..... I'm sure you meant well in your reply and comment here to Rick, and your waxing eloquent on Detroit Diesels, however.... your expose is SO riddled with wrong information, I hardly know where to begin.... so, I'll just leave it at that. : ) PS: Just so you know... I formally studied Engine Design and Development for four years at a very well known eastern school back in the early/mid 1960's.... three of those years, I studied directly under P. Nicholas, retired VP of R&D at GM Diesel (Detroit Diesel after mid 1965)... and who was directly involved in the design and development of the very first 2 cycle GM Diesel (a 4-71), under "Boss" Kettering. I have an 8x10" b&w of himself, Charles("Boss") Kettering, and one other.. taken with the 4-71 proto-type just moments after it was fired for the very first time in 1938, that he presented to me (framed) after I returned home the last time from VN. It is hanging on the wall directly above my pc monitor from which I am writing this.

Rick @ Classic Truck Rescue.... I wrote to you a year ago - apparently, the last comment posted and is at the top of the page, here... to which you responded, and I just now, revisited this video... and was totally unaware you had replied back to me, and included your contact info... I apologize for that, and will try contacting you soon via your contact info... sorry to hear of all that you've gone through. Anyway, all I wanted to bring your attention to is, in regards to the reply addressed to you from "scott scottswart440"...... read my reply to him, albeit 2 yrs late. PS: With regards to your last question to him ('scott......")... just above my reply to you, here...... and that he never replied to you on.... the answer is Yes, however... the vast majority, if not All these days.... of the "6-71, 8-71" blowers from the aftermarket sector, are just that... Aftermarket produced, whether from Mert Littlefield, Dyer, BDS, Mooneyham, Weiand, PSI, etc, etc, etc. Back "in the day" all these guys, along with Ed Pink and others were re-working the factory GM Diesel blowers with new end frames... especially the drive ends, as the factory frames were utilizing bushings along with non-rib supported bushing housings, which worked fine for maximum rpm levels of 2,500 (in marine applications) or more commonly, 2,100 rpms in automotive trim (trucks)..... but when applied to nitro fueled drag race engines, and high performance gas powered engines turning at 6 - 8,000+ (not to mention whatever percentage of blower overdrive) they very quickly learned that "something" had to change, and change Fast!!...... hence the strongly reinforced (internally) end covers, along with high speed ball and roller bearings (some used ball, some - roller) which were pressure fed oil, ala the original design. The so-called "10-71, 12-71, 14-71, & 18-71" Blowers of today are far superior to the original diesel units in materials, rotor design, airflow and overall reliability for high-speed, high output engines, and the "model" names for these (10-71, etc, etc) are just derived from extending the case and rotor lengths depending on usage and airflow requirements.

I didn't see the wig wag hanging down from the drivers side roof (it swings down when the air is under 65 psi, so the truck needs >65 psi to get it to stay up out of the line of site). 2 cycle jimmies 30 wt oil ONLY. it will burn everything else. I cant believe the clutch lining wasn't stuck to the flywheel. never seen the triple dry air filter set up- most had the oil bath donaldson. best way to drive them ol jimmies- slam your fingers in the door and get mad enough to drive it like you stole it. if you baby it, bad things happen. gull wing hood- they were miserable to work on. best day ever when the fiberglass tilt hoods came out. cant believe you can drive around in a residential neighbor hood and the ol revenuers aren't asking for license and insurance.

+charles shaw Yeah, and get a CDL if you want to drive it, and Hope like heck it doesn't break one of the two, huge rubber belts with teeth on them that drive the tandem rear wheels, Because Nobody makes them. Or sell it to a man who has a CDL, collects big rigs and actually restores them, so he can bring it back to its former glory and take it to car shows where other people can enjoy it. Just sayin...Homer is much more practical for my particular needs and at least I hauled that 900-Series out of the bushes before it was completely swallowed, got it running again after 30 years and drove it down the road. I agree though. if it were possible, that would be the one to haul stuff with. Have you watched the videos on Homer? Thanks Fer Watchin' -Rick

+crazeyspivey I usually wait before I sell any of my trucks before I do anything with them. My mission is to save old trucks, not to hoard them. The only way I can do this and still pay my bills is to find new homes for these old trucks and not try to make a fortune off each one. My videos normally include background shots of the Classic Truck Ranch and my current inventory. If you see something you like, let me know. Most of my trucks are for sale. Only requirement is that the buyer not put it back in the bushes. thanks Fer Watchin' -Rick

Hey Rick, if you're interested, I know of a nice '57 GMC 370 up around Tacoma. It seems to be all original. It's a flat bed, with an inline six, four speed, with a 2 speed rear end. The only bad rust is a small patch at the bottoms of both front fenders, and above the windshield inside the cab. It doesn't run, and I believe the brakes are seized up in the rear, but it's a super cool truck. I was gonna try to rescue it myself, but I got an El Camino that takes priority, so I figured I'd tell you about it.

As for me, I'm guilty as charged for s bombs and other asst. rancid statements, esp. if I'm dealing with briars! But, I do thank you for being polite and understanding, that means a lot to someone like him AND his family, they love 'im as he is. Sometimes with "us", you just hafta bend the rules of proper.
