I've been out of school for more years than I want to remember. We had lathe's like that in metal shop when i was a kid. I made a brass hammer, a clutch alignment tool with pilot bearing adapters, a brass alignment drift and an engine stand my senior year. I loved messing around with the lathe's.

Hey bro, I didn’t read through all of the comments here but FYI, Those 3 sockethead cap screws on the back plate ARE NOT to adjust the chuck & that (adapter plate) has to be machined on the front two faces and the O.D. of the first step on the boss so it has a precise fit into the bore of the pocket on the rear of the chuck. That way the chuck mounting plate and the chuck run concentric with the headstocks axis of rotation& That’s the only way to get the chuck mounted on the plate flat. Congratulations on the acquisition but if it’s set up right you’ll have a more precise, enjoyable and rigid machine for your projects in the future

First thing to add is a coolant system. The catch basin is already there so we are talking a couple hundreds buck. It will pay for itself in extending tooling life, faster cutting speeds, cleaner finish cuts.

I really like your channel it's a go to resource for how to build/design karts. I decided to take the plunge and build an off-road two seat kart. The hinged power package has a predator 212, TAV 30 with live axle and is nearing completion. I Settled on a frame width of 48 inches. The frame is 1/1/2 inch square tube for the bottom rails. All other tubes except for the wish bone sub-frame will be one inch schedule 30 structural tube The videos look like 48 inches is about right for a two seat Kart. I am making wood mock-ups of the kart before cutting metal for that section. Hubs will be 4 bolt golf cart style, front wheels on version 1.0 will be 8 inch golf kart. Rear wheels will be 10 inch with aggressive tread. The engine cradle is large enough for a future big block if the 212 is too puny for the job. Now for the punch line, I'm a 21 year old trapped in a 77 year old body. Incidentally, I have a 10 inch lathe and a Harbor Freight mill drill. They are invaluable assets for building. Wish I could justify the cost of a tube bender.

I have one like that and a cnc plasma cutter machine. It works great cause I do allot of welding and building trailers for customers. Trust me the pics that u had to send out to get machined u can do them on that. I do pasta for other people and they pay me good. I still work for the company I been working for a very very long time.

So much... You can thread chucks directly onto the threads on that spindle. You should in fact, when you want the minimal possible runout. You stuck a brand new new back plate on that spindle, and then you DIDN'T machine it. Take a skim cut to square the back plate with the spindle. THEN mount your new chuck. Same for the old face plate and chuck. You could have fixed those just as easily. Nice freaking lathe btw. Congrats!

You could also make a rotary mill chuck out of that old 3 jaw chuck like rather b welding has for his mill. Super useful for round drilling patterns like on homemade wheel hubs or brake disks

Awesome lather brother, had the same exact one in my old shop I worked at. It's probably a bushing or Journal headstock but if you keep them well oiled and clean you'll never have any problems with them. Idk when they changed over to roller bearings in the scope of time but we had a journal bearing and the shit was original and had barely a half thou of slop in the headstock, considering how much abuse and hours were on the thing when we got it??? REALLY couldn't complain at that time, but they were pretty massive bronze bushings from what I remember, hopefully you'll get lucky and have the upgraded version with bearings in the headstock. Good luck bro, and can't wait to see what your outcome is with the new toy! It's a definite must have, no doubt.

Tool post angle is wrong. Don’t run the indicator on the outside of the chuck as that is not an indicating surface. Get a test indicator and run it on the mating taper. This Old Tony is a great channel for people learning machining. I ran one of those in high school, ah memories.

A tip: When trying to line up a part on an old ass lathe try wacking the top of the jaw on the high side with a chunk of brass. You may be surprised at how much run out you can remove by pushing the scroll around in the chuck using this method.
@TrulyUnfortunate
@TrulyUnfortunate 2 года назад
@@StansWorld Old chucks that are sprung would hardly be considered a precision tool. If it was you wouldnt have to wack the back side of the jaw to get it to line up. Personally I prefer a Buck Chuck but not very many shops want to ass up the money for them. I was a machinist for 30 years and made everything from oil field equipment to flight hardware for the NASA shuttle program. Trust me,there's nothing you can show me when it comes to machining.

@jimciancio9005
@jimciancio9005 2 года назад
Hey just FYI if you get sick of breaking the old leather belts. Measure it up length wise and run a GM or whatever Serp belt upside down on the flat, works amazingly and you'll never break one or slip the belt again.
@johnsmith-zs9jq
@johnsmith-zs9jq 2 года назад
Those belts don't work on a Heavy 10. The belt MUST be spliced.

I live in Manchester Tn and own Manchester speedway kart track. I’ve been following you. I build my own engines for my kart and my sons. I use the ducar 196 cc for my sons akra engine and the hf 212 for my outlaw modified engines. Which if fixing to put one of my outlaw engines on my bike instead of the stock 212 currently on it.
