So cool to see the old gal running! Btw that’s a old Milne truck line truck, I know this because I used to have the mate to it. Ours was a 220 with 4 and a 4 but looked identical otherwise. I have to ask, is it for sale? That knob that you are pulling to kill the engine is the compression release ours shut off with the switch. Thanks for showing
It's cool to think about, for a while I use to think the same thing. But I was able to get a copy of the build sheet. And this was ordered by Henry L. Young & Son's from the KW plant in Washington state. Sorry but she's not for sale. This truck is the one that started my bad addiction to old iron. Come Sept. it is getting a clear coat to help keep the history of the truck. The inside of the truck will be restored to spec. Nothing fancy for this one. A shut off switch would be kind of nice.
always wanted to work for Milne.. started driving in 86.. I think they went out the next year.. I used to pull their loaded pups from Michelin in Fairfield CA to Sacramento to their yard..
A well-done introduction to a veteran which served long and well, and will now receive well-deserved loving care and mobility. Keep us posted as progress is made. Don
@@Navyguy1990 Sadly, the gorgeous new Kenworth W990 will probably not be around as long as this vintage beauty. I have heard the Paccar powertrain has issues with excess engine carbon build up and defective parts. Many do an EGR delete to improve diesel engine performance. But you have to do an EGR delete right out of the dealership to stop the carbon from being so bad and that just slows down the carbon buildup. I think there is a class action lawsuit pending because of the excess down time, catastrophic engine failures, and poor performance. Too bad gliders were forced out of production by the draconian EP A and Canada followed suit. Land of the free, yeah right. Maybe the new W990s may make a beautiful glider of sorts. Buy a used one and drop in an older powertrain.
@@indridcold8433 , I absolutely agree! Those Paccar engines are CRAP and they can’t even get out of their own way! I had the misfortune of driving a KW with a Paccar engine in it and with a 75,000 Lb gross, BICYCLES were practically passing me on the mountain grades!! It was pathetically underpowered!! 🙄
@@Navyguy1990 I do not even make cargo runs with them. I merely service, maintain, and repair them. Inside and out, the Kenworth W990 is gorgeous! It would make an excellent glider kit without a powertrain. But as you, and many other drivers and mechanics have noticed, the over engineered engine is pitiful. When it starts carboning up, which is very soon, all manner of failure codes light up the display like a Christmas tree. This is usually around 150,000 miles to 200,000 miles. The engine is not even broken in yet and it is breaking up instead. Since I only drive them for test drives, there is usually nothing in the trailer or no trailer at all. I can not testify that I have personally witnessed the underpowered pig. However, drivers always leave a description as to what the symptoms are when the W990 is brought in for service and repair. On the list of symptoms, one of the complaints that is always written is the rig is severely underpowered from the first day it was driven. There is no exception to this. There is a software update for the engine control module that is said to address the underpowered response of the engine that I flash after I do the other repairs needed. Every single driver has always left in the log that they felt no difference in performance after the latest software flash. This means the software flash is likely for something Paccar has not even revealed to the public at all and just wrote it up as a flash to address the under performance of the engine. It is likely they are hidding something potentially catastrophic in the making. I wonder if the Peterbuilt rigs with Piccar powertrains have the same crap the Kenworths have. Work only uses Kenworth. It is pitiful that 35 year old Kenworths with millions of miles are more reliable than these gorgeous new W990s. The, "W," in, "W990," has started to mean, "weak." The, "990," in, "W990," is the average annual down time in hours for repairs. Looks and comfort, do not make it go.
The modern dayers, are going what s that thing he's pulling what's that 3rd pedal on the left what's that thing sticking up out of the middle of the floor lol good video
I still miss my 72 w923. Bigcam 4 400 with 13 speed and 4:11 gears never shoulda give her up.But checkbook said she gota gotToo many other irons in the fire.
It’s awesome that you saved this truck from being scrapped. This is one of my favorite trucks. This runs really good and looks like it was taken care of.
Thanks, this is my first old rig. The truck was a heavy hauler so it has a few problems because of that on an aluminum frame. The plan is to clear coat the outside and restore the inside.
NICEEEEEE .. i love the old trucks .. they have some magic and history .. Iwas driver truck in the mids 80's and 90's ... with a KW 77 Cummins 350 Big Cam and 14spd
Koolest truck I've seen in a long time. I learned in a 79 5 star general with a Cummins and a 9 speed. Still have knots on my head and guts hanging out my ass to this day.
Great video! I used to have a 1945 kenworth. I have a video on it. I just recently sold it unfortunately. I have a 1958 Pete now with a 335 cummins with a 5x4
Thanks. The outside is going to stay as is. The inside of the cab will be rebuilt. Im looking forward to future videos of your Pete. She looks like it could clean up nicely.
Its crazy how simple these things were back in the day the only electrical things on this truck were the lights, starter, and fb raido....hell to shut them off u just cut the fuel off literally like at the end of the video
I saved it from scrap. The body will be cleaned and clear coated. The inside of the cab will be fully restored. The paint job is original. And from the build sheet, its about 94% numbers matching.
Bob, Im apart of the ATHS American Trucking Historical Society. Its pretty much a lot of guys that love and restore old trucks. Just like how guys restore and collect classic cars. Same thing, only bigger. My trucks are registered as a classic vehicle but insured as an R.V. I've actually got two trucks that I use on the farm. One is an old hay truck, 1954 Diamond T CN-921 and a C-931 Diamond T dump truck. Here very soon i'll have a 59 CN- 931 Diamond T that i'll try and do some videos of the restoration work. If you look back in my video's, I have a walk around video of it.
@@bobvel7760 Thanks, it's a lot of fun. Especially when I meet people that use to drive these old trucks for a living. The trucks are a blast. But it's the history that I love the most.
Let's be honest, the likelihood that it is going to be putting in 120,000 miles pulling a full load each of those 20 years is not likely at all. The truth is that EPA98 engines, DDEC3 and DDEC4, N14 and 3406E and 6NZ are the best engines ever put in North American trucks. Longevity, getting 1 to 1.5 million miles was routine, power, each of them were available from the factory with twice the horsepower and torque of this engine, and fuel effeciency, with each of them getting 6-7 mpg in W9 and 379.
@@kirkstinson7316 is correct. I was replacing the airlines on this truck. I have a small pin whole leak on the fuel line. So it normally needs a little coaxing to fire up. My 57 IH coaster with the same motor fires up like a champ.

The correct pups are harder to find. I know of two. But they're both passed the point of restoring. I picked up a 1957 ex-CF coe. My friend has an 85 shaker coe 24 series. So then new goal is to not worry about the pups. And its moved on to having 3 generations of CF cabovers.
Just imagine this iron behind you and the only thing you see behind you is the number plate and bumper. Would be horrifying. Thats why I love these ole irons.
The outside won't change much. Thats the original paint job, so its getting a clear coat. The inside of the cab will be restored to spec. The motor ans transmissions were gone through and good to go. I just wish I had more time to really dig into it. ive got two more classics that will get a full frame up restoration.
Agreed 100%. Thats why the truck is getting clear coated the way it sits. Its history is mainly here in Utah. The interior inside of the cab will be restored back to the specs that it came with.
Is there anyone in the US who can tell me how wide this Kenworth range is, at the rear of the cab and over the fenders? I'm a model builder and would like to build a truck like this, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything about it on the internet. Maybe here?
Starts up beautifully and runs great. For its age this Ken is beautiful. All it needs is a home and some love and a sand blaster with a fresh coat of paint and some wax. You would never know what age this was. I love it
This truck is getting cleaned up and clear coated. The paint job and company are the original. And the business has some major history here. The inside of the cab on the other hand is going to be restored back to how it was built. Thankfully I was able to get a copy of the built sheet. So I've got something to go off of.
She's nothing fancy. I was always told to wish in one hand and crap in the other. And then realize what seems more realistic. But that being said with out wishing and dreaming. Nothing would ever get done. You've got some good videos yourself. Keep up the awesome job on those old tractors. Maybe someday down the road you'll be able to see the truck
Yep me know if you ever want to sell the old girl I would love to Mechanically Restore it make it get into a badd ass daily driver for pulling trailers for a company I tell you what I will probably the only one of the few on the road with a vintage work rig
That's what ive done to it. The truck has been clear coated to hopefully save what paint it has left. It hasnt moved many trailers. But it does the job nicely. Shes slow, but still a good work horse.
