So close. So so close to finishing. If it wasn't for that one last cable that I used on the Bomber I'd have been able to finish this. I should have checked my stock!
Ok so lessons learnt here:
- Don't powder coat light parts that have potentially been soldered together. It will destory them.
- Don't thread in, even if it's just till it catches, a mismatching cup in the bottom bracket. Someone might try and tighten it and destroy the threads
- Frame locks are an absolute pain to remove
- Rod brakes require a little more attention than caliper brakes.

so recognizable, all of those issues, small and large, that come with restoring vintage bikes. You know they're there, just waiting to rear their ugly heads when the job commences. And of course the satisfaction when they're overcome. Well done, the result is beautiful!

Gone are the days when this type of bicycles were made and traded, but luckily one model is still sold out here in India Named as BSA Deluxe, not the same but about 80% of its parts are same . One thing I liked most is it comes with chrome plated spokes. Very nice restoration. Would like to see more restoration of vintage bicycles, a lot of thanks .

@joejones1145

Strictly speaking, a chain guard would be some form of covering to protect the rider's clothes from the chain, where a chain case would be a full enclosure, sealed, carrying a small bath of oil in order to constantly lubricate the chain.

@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 4 года назад
Ah ha. I didn't build it but I got super lucky to find one. It's a cotter pin press that someone in the UK had made but he only made 5 or so. There's a place in the US that sells them for a hefty price and I believe RJ has made a video on how he made one. Very useful thing to remove and set cotter pins without trashing them.

I've found this really helpful so thank you. Can you tell me the name of the tool you use to remove the bolt holding the crank and pedal arm on
@errcoche
@errcoche 3 года назад
It's a cotter pin removal tool. If you get a standard G-clamp for metal work or woodwork, available in any hardware store, you should be able to use it along with some kind of metal cylinder into which the pin is pushed ( like a socket from a ratcheting socket set ) to achieve the same result.
@markyoung950
@markyoung950 3 года назад
Is that the fixed cup still in the frame? British threaded drive-side bottom bracket cups are counter-clockwise threaded (backwards). There are several special tools that an older bicycle shop would have: Stein, Var and others. Were any of the components replated? You got the fixed cup out. A custom frame builder might be able to help with the BB threads. I work in a bicycle shop and I have made mistakes. Everyone I have ever worked for, wished I worked that fast. If you grease the stem steerer tube interface, the stem will not get stuck. Pedal threads as well. In the states, we have a few specialty bicycle shop-museums that stock components no longer manufactured. I imagine that is true for Raleigh bicycles as well. I found applying a ridiculous amount of leather treatment to the underside of a new saddle will help it break in.

Wonderful build! Thanks for sharing. Did you need to peen over the rivets for the headbadge (on the inside of the head tube) to avoid rubbing on the steerer portion of the fork? (That's the thing about these restorations among we who have tinkered with such problems -- the questions get really particular!)
@MonkeyShred
@MonkeyShred 4 года назад
I did to a degree and then filed them down slightly to make a bit of clearance. It's a fairly awkward place to get in there to peen them over but with the right side rivets they "grip" in to the edge of the hole in the frame.
