My first car memory. About 1959 or so, my dad, mom, little sister and I were returning from a family visit at night. My dad driving, my sister sleeping in the back seat and I was asleep on the package tray. Rounding a corner, my dad hit a telephone pole that was lying across the road. Everyone was fine. My sister ended up on the floor and I landed on the empty seat. That was the last we saw of our 57 DeSoto! I was always fascinated by those triple stacked taillights! Just stunning! Thanks for bringing back such an old memory!

Beautiful. The 57, 58, 59 Desoto were the best of the Forward Look. There is just something so ephemeral about the "fin era" in automotive design. It made no practical sense, but now it is a cool, hard-to-believe-they-did-that factor that makes cars with fins stand out from the years before and after. Thanks to you and the owner. 🙂

Mom had a 58 DeSoto Firedome convertible in the lighter shade of green. It had the Torqueflite too, and twin antennas. Nice car, but thirsty and hated to run on the wet rainy days. -2 mufflers, 2 resonators, always needing a replacement of one exhaust component or another. -powerful though. -Now only 10 exist in the whole World.

There was a (wonderful) time in American automotive history, when all cars had character. Each was colorful and very distinctive...although many looked similar, they remained unique in some way. Sadly, those days are long gone. Modern cars all look like "melted jellybeans"...none are unique. This wonderful DeSoto is a perfect example of 1950s "American" car design...a long lost art.

The '56 Chrysler lines were a high point for the corporation. This especially includes the DeSoto. I used to know a guy who was a test driver for the Chrysler cars. He told me that DeSoto was used to test new technology before it was committed to the Chrysler line per se. Whatever, the '56-'57 DeSoto's were awesome cars. Chryslers were never the same afterward.

I remember when I was little, me & my 2 cousins had these 3 friends that were 3 sisters. Their dad had one of these Desoto cars that was parked on the side of their house. I believe it was a 4 door hardtop. It was white and if in remembering correctly, the interior was a blueish color? I remember the car because of the funky tail fins, and the inside rear view mirror was sitting on the dashboard instead of hanging in between the sun visors from the windshield. Being as shapeless, colorless, and anonymous as possible, are what they WANT. Their choices of shapeless, dark, colorless clothing, Grey-scale interiors, and deliberately hideous little SUVs and Minivans, signal a fear of standing-out. These are people who were parked in daycare kennels as tiny toddlers, and who lived sandwiched between the threat of bullying from other kids, and the threat of bad grades from teachers - on top of expectations to be on "teams". There was no room in their lives, for anything other than grade-grubbing, avoiding bullying, spouting the required ideologies (Diversideeeeeee!), and to "Bleh' Bawhll!" - oh, and pressure to maintain their status as "normal" by forcing themselves to be "fans" of whatever "teams" they were supposed to care about. There is no room in their lives, or in their minds, for anything colorful or beautiful.

DeSoto dropped the early hemi after 1957; Chrysler dropped it after 1958. Accountants forced adaptation of the wedgehead engine design, at much less cost than those big hemi cylinder heads. I worked at Chysler engineering in 1957. My observation was that the hiearchy of control was accountants and stylists as number one and two, with engineering down at third place. For instance, torsion suspension was developed to allow Virgil Exner to lower the hood line, with the torsion bars (versus coil springs). Turned out to be a rare win-win for everyone. The 2nd generation hemi in the early sixties was pure NASCAR.

You guys both called it a "Luxury Car", but it's not really that at all, DeSoto was a medium priced car and it's top line would be close the the lower level to middle Chrysler Brand. Imperial was the Luxury car of the Chrysler Corporation. It's definitely Glamorous, but it's not Luxury, it's Sporty. PS, I own a 58 Fireflight Sedan. Learned how to drive on a 56 DeSoto.

Yes DeSoto was positioned above Dodge and below Chrysler. It basically competed against GM's Oldsmobile and lower trim Buicks, also to FoMoCo's Mercury and even (gasp!) Edsel.

That pedal had nothing to do with the emergency brake, it was for the windshield washer fluid pump. How could anyone that's regularly exposed to classic 50's & 60's cars not recognize that?

Once again LC, this car came from the factory with dual horns (look it up!) apparently one of them was just not working when this video was made. That's why it wasn't "what you were expecting". Gonna blow another gasket now? That's OK, Zuckerberg's car is still a beauty.

Virgil Exner really knocked it out of the ballpark with the rear of this car. The dash, though was very unergonomic with control knobs in the middle and the secondary gauges down so low they are really out of sight.

@dlwatib

Plymouth was always the low priced brand in the Chrysler line-up. De Soto started out below Dodge, but was moved up a notch in 1933 above Dodge. De Soto was between Dodge and Chrysler from 1933 until its demise in 1961. By that time Imperial had been split off from Chrysler as the top of the line brand, and Chrysler had also brought out the Newport which duplicated the De Soto price range. So for most of its history, the order was Plymouth, Dodge, De Soto, Chrysler, Imperial.
