On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 8-17-19.
We're looking at a 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible in Persian Black Paint and a White Accent. The car comes with the with the optional Tri-Power three two barrel Rochester carbonators from the factory on a 370 CI V8 engine producing 300 HP.
The car's Owner is Les Scopes. Les’ has had this car since 2015. Les shares at 13 years old his mother had a car like this and he got a set of keys made and took it out and was caught by the police doing 100 MPH!!
Bottom line is he always loved his Mom’s car and decided to get one like it, and this one has been restored to showroom condition.
ENJOY!

Great Car, and back story! Funny to me because my Father caught me by marking the tire with chalk and knew when I took it out for a spin at 13 and ge also gave me the keys with no license and said just take it easy..... we had great times back in the day that most won't ever have again! Thanks Lou for another Great Vehicle with a wonderful story and a trip back to better days!!

The old Balzekas Chrysler Plymouth dealership on Archer Ave! Stanley, the son of the founder, is still around, although now elderly. I grew up in that neighborhood and the dealership was an anchor for decades on a busy business strip. Huge neon signs on the building and another across the street on the used car lot. Looked spectacular at night. Great car, nice owner and good video. Thanks, Lou!

SWEET ride Lou! The 1958 Bonneville most definitely had the LOOK and STYLE of class! And just sitting still, it looked like it was running an 100 mph. It just looked fast! And it was fast! In 1960 my Dad was shopping for a car to replace that old, green 1950 Plymouth we had. One saturday morning he drives up in a white with red interior, 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible, I fell in love with that car immediately! And I thought he'd bought that car. Only to find out that he hadn't a few minutes later that he was just test driving cars. It was such an upgrade from what we had too that I just knew he was going to buy that one. A little while later he drives up in this UGLY brownish/gold-toned body with a white top, 1960 Pontiac Ventura, hardtop, with a brown interior. I remember thinking to myself, "I hope he doesn't buy that ugly, ole car." He leaves again and is gone for about 2 hrs. Upon his return he comes in the front door and says, "Come see the new car I just bought!" Hoping with all my heart that it was that BEAUTIFUL white Bonneville ... but instead, it was that UGLY ole Ventura he'd brought home before! Needless to say that I was very disappointed. And they drove that UGLY, ole Ventura until 1986 when he replaced it with an blue body - blue interior, with a black vinyl top - 1986 Buick Electra Park Avenue. He passed in 1989 at 62, and my Mother drove that car until she was 89 yrs old. I stopped her from driving it because, she was just too old to be on the road and drive safely. She had a Pacemaker, and was legally blind in one eye. But she kept passing the driving test every two years to get her drivers license? Go figure! But when I found out that she couldn't tell what color the traffic lights were that was it for me. I figured I did everyone a favor by taking her off the streets, lol. I still have that car, as I inherited it in 2018' when she passed away.

How disappointing for you Namedrop...and to have that old Ventura for over 20 years...I'd be in therapy if that happened to me especially after the Bonneville convertible was the first in the driveway.
@gtpcruiser02
@gtpcruiser02 4 года назад
namesdrop....Your Dad like mine probably thought the Ventura made more economic sense. I remember my Dad saying "That car is to rich for my blood" when one of the neighbors would drive down the street in a flashy new car like a Cadillac or Lincoln.
@namrednop
@namrednop 4 года назад
@@gtpcruiser02 - I am sure that you hit the 'nail on the head' with the 'made more sense economically' to buy the Ventura over the Bonneville, as he'd just started working for a subsidiary of Wise Foods (Potato Chips) that was a Brand New Company at the time here in NC at the time. Had he known in less than 5 yrs he'd be the Vice president in charge of Sales he might have bought the Bonneville instead. But that ole Ventura served its purpose, and it was still running perfectly when he sold it to a neighbor for $200 that was in need of another vehicle. What had he already bought to replace that car? Another honkingly big, 1972 Buick Centurion with a 455cu -4bbl. And that was a great car as well. Rode like a dream! Was only rated at 210hp though. But it would smoke the tires! Ask me how I know, lol.

the entire '58 GM line, long maligned by many, is my favorite, the Bonnie is the epitome. they are everything that you can no longer get...style, bling, size, weight, power. It was the last year for Harley Earl styling, and his team went all out...the most chrome and stainless brightwork on any American car line...Harley believed that that was what Americans wanted. Maybe so, maybe not, but glad we had them! I think the '58's are now ascendant, as people realize what they are. I have a '58 Fleetwood, which is amazing car, loaded with bling and power, but the Bonnie is my favorite '58. thx Les and Lou for showing!

As a follow up, Weber 2bbl carbs are not a direct fit on a stock Pontiac manifold. Also the bolt pattern is different from the Rochester 2bbl carbs and an adapter is required. If you look closely there is nothing changed under the hood of the Pontiac. I find it hard to believe he would opt for a much pricer carb change and not up grade anything else. All in all and no matter what is or not is on the car it is a clean survivor and pretty rare. Myself I owned a 58 Pontiac Starchief 2dr coupe that was stick shift.

@gtpcruiser02 4 года назад
Another reason younger people aren't aware of Pontiac is the stigma attached to American vehicles especially General Motors because they received GOVERNMENT LOANS......NOT BAILOUTS as the lying media wanted you to believe because I worked for GM. Younger Americans naturally assume Japanese, Korean and German vehicles are better. They were at better in the past but domestics are radically improved over the last decade or so. Chrysler which is merged with Damiler Mercedes also received Government Loans which both companies paid back. I noticed younger people are really into Dodge vehicles probably because the Charger, Challenger Hellcat models are so popular.

That's a Bad Bonnie! The four place bucket seats make the interior as unique as the exterior and I like that he has seat belts front and rear. Pontiac only offered buckets on the convertible for '58. The '58 T-Bird had them standard up front, but used a full back seat upholstered to look like buckets like other manufacturers. You always do a fantastic job of focusing on the dashboards. The behind the wheel vantage point is worth tuning in and tha Speed Reminder is cool. Thanks for posting.

Lou....That was a Generator we were looking at under the hood instead of an Alternator. I remember when I was a kid if you got stuck in traffic in a vehicle with a Generator and the Engine wasn't idling fast enough for the Generator to charge the Battery completely the Engine would drain it out and eventually the Battery would go dead and leave you stranded. I remember that happened to my Dad's 1955 Pontiac Chieftain with the Straight 8, Illuminated Indian Head Hood Oranament and Power Windows. Yes Power Windows in a 1955 Pontiac. Absolute Luxury. LMAO!

I love the 1957-58 Bonneville. The fuel injected 57 Bonneville's were the first real performance cars ever made by Pontiac and also one of the fastest cars you could buy in 1957. I love the 58 Tri Power Bonneville's too. I believe they still offered fuel injection in 58 but they are extremely rare because the late 50's fuel injection wasn't very reliable and many injected cars got switched back to carbureted induction

Yes, the Pontiacs in the early 50s were being bought by Aunt Bea and her demographic. GM had new leadership, hired John DeLorean to make changes at Pontiac and youre looking at his mid-mgmt. skills. He shot to the top of the hierarchy. He was a true visionary.

I have a 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe and some neighborhood kids were walking by when I was doing some maintenance on it and they asked what kind of car is that. They never heard of Oldsmobile or Cutlass. I told them to find an old car and fix it up and to cherish and preserve some history. They just looked at me like I just escaped from the insane asylum. So much for history.

Weber carbs were an aftermarket set up. From Pontiac, original tri-power was 3-2 bbl Rochester carbs made by General Motors. The center carb was slightly smaller and was the primary carb. The two end carbs were slightly larger and came into use at about three quarter open throttle. This setup was used until 1965 when the center carb was changed to have the same cfm as the end carbs.

In 1961, my Dad test drove a 57 Bonneville convertible offered for sale by a local Dodge dealer (I was along for the ride). Just repainted, looked great. Price, as I recall, was only $1100. On the drive, Dad gave it full throttle a couple of times. I was too young to know the difference, but Dad said, this isn't right. Got back to the dealership and popped the hood. Instead of the fuel injected motor it was supposed to have, there was a lonely two barrel carb (with no air cleaner). He passed.

Been there, done that. But I was 16 years old and I had keys to all the cars. Just remembered I did get caught . Driving a 67 Jag 420 SS . I was doing 95 in a 35. Just so people will not think I'm insane it was still 35 mph but it was quite few miles out of town nothing around you but Grapes. The Officer was kind enough to make it 85 in 35 zone. Otherwise he would have had to take me to Jail. Fine was $25.00. The next ticket was less speed and a much HIGHER fine.

Lou & Owner: Thanks, a great Video! Interestingly, the Dealership Building looks like the Bledsoe Buick & Pontiac DEALER SERVICE SHOP, in Warsaw IN , where I ordered my 1977 TRANSAM Spec ED IN 1976: also Dad bought at 1952 Buick ( Yellow/Black) from the Bledsoe’s Dad( Building 1952 ,same though updated sometime to this Video look alike, to me), REALLY DEJA VU!!!!!!!!! ANYWAYS, THESE Ponchos were in High demand ( and the OLDSMOBILE Rocket versions) if one could not get 57 FUEL INJ CHEVYS, ETC.... IN MY High School years 1961-65 at Wolf Lake IN , ETC....

@@DJ-365 My first car was a '73 Pontiac Grand Prix. I remember that, although the car had been constructed like a tank, they built the front end out of plastic....or fiberglass. Even with its 400 engine and 4 barrel carburetor, the car was never too impressive to me.
