This Oliver OC46-3G crawler had its head gasket replaced and some other work done, then it was stored in a barn for 13 years. The coolant is low and the oil is high. The owner is concerned the head gasket repair has failed. Let's see what we can do!

@MJ-vv2fr 4 года назад
I have an earlier model of this tractor. It has a 4 cylinder flathead Hercules engine, but other than that and the dashboard, it’s pretty much identical. It’s a pretty easy machine to work on. You can have the final drives off in an hour or two. Ours has a dozer blade on the front. Good machine that’s worth fixing for sure. It will pull until it digs a rut a foot deep in hard ground.
@Nozzlejockey2
@Nozzlejockey2 4 года назад
I too have two of these old machines, one OC-3 early 50's the other is a 1960 OC-4. the 4 is a basket case now with final drive issues. the 3 did run and drive but now no. been sitting to long. and I am way to disabled to work on it any longer. so If someone want to buy these I will sell. thanks for this video brings back memories.

From the age of about 12 (old enough to crank start it.. old enough to drive it), I used to drive around our place and the neighbours in an old Oliver OC-3. Neighbour had an old HG as a doner for some parts. Was a 4-pot variant of this with a PTO on the rear. These things had higher gear ratios because they were much loved by orchardist's in very hilly almost terraced setups. Not sure about yours, but on the OC-3, when you pull the levers, yes it clutched but there was also a brake for that set of cleats. At one stage we had to do work on the rear clutches and drive. I was about 13 so this was in the late 80's. I remember it too a lot of work to pull the tracks off and get at the back end. I wish I had doc's for it still. The old neighbour (passed away now) used to have it all. Many beautiful memories of this.. seeing yours run warmed my heart greatly.

Fairly easy to work on. Check on the sprockets. I've seen some where people slotted the sprockets. Then all you do pull is the small cover off the outside final cover. Just pull the axle on both sides then the center comes right out. If not you have to split tracks and pull the sprocket off. Even on these things everything fairly heavy. Have fun. I have couple of these things. Really strong machines and reliable. Wish some of the new stuff would be as reliable. Only down fall the 3 cylinder motor is strong but finding rod bearings are not readily available except through one person. Have fun. Neat info. This is one of the few machines ever tested that will almost pull 100 percent of it's own weight. That's saying alot.

Got me to digging into my memory, over two decades ago. I worked on an old HD-7 Allis that experienced the same symptoms, same system. The two clutch packs mounted on a single shaft that floated through the big ring gear. It got wear, and eventually it moved enough that when you got one clutch adjusted to where it would disengage that side, everything would push over enough that the clutch on the other side didn't have enough free play, and both would disengage. I rednecked a split shim out of a flat plumbing nut (it was a lot of movement) as I couldn't find any hinged split washer type shims of the right size, and told the man that I expected that fix to eventually fail, and that the only real cure would be through taking it apart. Same procedures you were talking about. I haven't viewed the next video yet, it will be interesting to see if this is a similar situation.

I should think or like to think this one should get some more likes going as this is the stuff that I want. The electrical stuff you do always gets my attention but this is full on no nodding off watch it all good stuff. I enjoy seeing old stuff live again. It has gone past its usefulness so unless you slow it down, I would put a brush hog behind it and go for it as it is so fast that it beats all the competition for travel. I think the big tanks of oxygen and use propane for a rosebud to heat stuff up and get it off in one piece. Not much in the way so it should be easier than say a bobcat with all its phony stuff that makes them work. Good luck Wes

Yes. He has been using it all summer. Works good. The one steering clutch just had some rust build up. He cleaned it and it works just fine.

@@WatchWesWork that's awesome! I'd watch a video of it working if you were interested in making one. I caught the premiere at the tail end. Just now found out you sold the rollback. I was wondering why you decided to trailer. You can do a lot with a trailer and a winch setup. Hardest part of trailing is having a good battery on hand for the winch.

I just bought 14 acres and only about 2 are developed. Something like this would be useful for exploring the undeveloped land.

That crawler wanted to stay on your factory fresh trailer. (I've seen much, much worse.) Great job getting it running. Looking forward to the next one.

Wes, you can't operate a crawler like that without a yellow hardhat, it just won't run right.

When repairing an engine with point ,clean points with 600 grit sandpaper,then set the gap just before installation of the cap close the points and polish clean with a dollar bill..this works magic,let me know.
