1961 Tonka Mobile Clam Restoration * 60th Anniversary *

I found this 1961 Tonka Mobile Clam on Facebook Marketplace for $40. It was missing the upper crank, and windshield, but was in pretty much all there otherwise. The turret mechanism gets very loose on these and I wanted to remedy that. I love how it turned out! Special thanks to Mark for hooking me up with the missing crank!

To add to the reply chain, I guess I'm a railway modeler who likes his kit weathered, whereas you're returning old treasures to mint condition. It's great looking at stuff from both angles and I can just see several seven year old's I've worked with over the years gazing in covetous awe at your handiwork. good 'ealth, mate. John W

Oh doesn't this bring back memories, the many hours being my own construction company boss at 5 years of age. Relocating my dad's sand pile he had purchased for making mirror, and the brick job he and grand pop was doing to the house. What great memories. Thank you!

Thanks CJ. I also would not want the short version, but I wanted a few to have that option. I appreciate your desire to see all the details. I am toying with the idea of doing a multi part series on a project I have coming up so that I can put in more of the details, upload more often, and not have the video becoming prohibitively long. Absolutely love these restorations. Superb workmanship and it's great to see these splendid old monsters coming back to life. One mild comment only, what about a matt finish rather than gloss, in keeping with such workhorses. John Warner, Murrumbateman NSW Australia
@RepairRestore
@RepairRestore 3 года назад
Thanks John. These originally did not have a matte finish and I was hoping for a more original look. I know that they originally were not powder coated either, but we all have to give somewhere.😀 I live in Michigan and some of the Road Commission trucks paint the hoods Matte Black to cut down on glare.

Disfruto mucho Chip Channel.

Restoring an old Tonka is deleting its history. With new color and stickers it has no real value for me as a collector. Replacing the ropes and fixing non working parts is ok. The patina and rust makes it wonderful. Restoring old toys with new color etc is a NO-GO!!!
