One of my subscribers has been after a Hacker GP15 Cavalier for a long time!
As they are a great loyal subscriber, and a thoroughly nice person I have let one of the Cavaliers from my personal collection go to them.
This person will be perfect owner!...They have plenty of my favourite records and tons of Russ Conway...(Big Smiley Face!) I will get to see it again as they make videos too! :)
I'm not letting on who its gone to right now...But I'm sure they will post a video response assuming it arrives safe and sound.
It is a 1962 model with a Garrard AT6 deck which has been stripped and built...I have also rebuilt the amp from scratch and upgraded the cartridge to a BSR SC12. Nice new soft mains lead and plug...It's a lovely machine!
Many Thanks to those who watch!
Take care! :)

My parents got married in October 1961...Still married now! :) The Cavalier range do look years ahead of their time to me too...They are beautifully made! The old Major next to it is less than 2 years older but looks far older to me! Some of the Hackers models do look their age though...Especially the ones in wooden cases. I love the Huge American Console Players...They sound amazing! Thanks for commenting! :)

Hi Weasel :) The whole of the front of this 50 year old player is the speaker...It's Huge! 7 real tube watts of undistorted sound...They can pack a real punch when they want...My camera doesn't pick it up that well. Many Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! :)

I will have to dig out some of my wifes old 12" 80's records after hearing the B52's on the cavalier and give them a spin on my Gondolier! I will see if i can get my neighbours banging on the wall !! That is interesting regarding the sharing of speakers. It's incredible the speaker doesn't seem to suffer after 50 years of use! Take care! Tim.

CD players do everything hidden away! No moving parts to see...No fun to watch! My parents got married in 1961...I have all of their record now! A good mixture of everything! They enjoyed going to see the big bands live...It must have been a great time to live in! Many Thanks for commenting! :)

Ever refit one of these to use a moving magnet cart instead of one of those ceramics? You'd need a small preamp stage but that should be easy enough to whack together with an op-amp on a small bit of perf board.

Hi Neil...Always remember...Its not the size of the record...Its how nice it sounds that matters...haha!!! :) I have 'Hole in the Ground' too! Mr Cribbins is a legend in my books! He was 'The Wobbles' after all...Who could even come close? Brian Cant maybe...But he can't sing as well...haha!!! I didn't want to let this Cavalier go...It has the later amp with the additional 8uf and 16uf capacitors...But it is going to a Great Home! As Always...Many Thanks for your kind words! :)

Hi Tim...Yes they do share the same speaker, and this one has the identical later amp that's found in the Gondolier. It two more capacitors. 8uf and 16uf The Gondolier has a larger case and they do produce a little more bass than the Cavalier. They all sound much better after a rebuild and cartridge upgrade though. Thanks for commenting! :)

Hello, at 57, I have been a lover of old record players since the day I used to stand on the arm of my Dads arm chair and just look into the Dansette RP mesmerized watching the records going round and round, dropping down and playing. Now I have a question for you, with this old auto change record players like the garrard decks as they safe to play the most modern LP's or will they ruin them??

Hi Glenn...This video was made well over 5 years ago. The new owner sold this excellent player on eBay for a nice profit. A lesson learned and a mistake I won't make again. The only players of this quality I have let go since have been to close friends and family. Thanks for your comment :)

Great record. I have a hacker herald with very bad mains hum , changing the valves made no difference in the player. Any idea , I do know some old vintage sets did suffer from mains hum . You can’t beat the old sets , incidentally i had the amplifier for the set

Sorry that last message probably didnt read to well. What I am try to ask is, I would love to have another auto changer like the Garrard AT6 etc, but as I have some valuable records some of which are the newest type, Im afraid these record players will eat into them or wear them. I play them on a Project turntable at them moment, but do miss the oldie in my living room lol
@GarrardAT6
@GarrardAT6 5 лет назад
Record players from the 1950's and 60's generally had ceramic or crystal cartridges, many of these had a mono stylus fitted and tracked up to 10 grams. These will damage stereo records of any age. The Hacker Cavalier in this video has a ceramic BSR SC12M cartridge fitted, and is tracking around 2 grams. It is fitted with a conical stereo stylus which is kinder to records than the elliptical, or bi-radial, possibly even hyper-elliptical stylus you are running on your Project turntable. So in answer to your question, if you have the right vintage machine, using the correct stylus, tracking at a modest weight, everything will be fine. If you get yourself a vintage machine tracking at 7 to 10 grams with a mono stylus fitted you will see it cut its own groove in your lovely modern soft vinyl and ruin it forever.

Gear video Jon, as ever entertainment value 10/10
@GarrardAT6
@GarrardAT6 12 лет назад
Yes I have! :) Honestly the difference is minimal. The upgraded BSR Cartridge I fit compares amazingly well to a magnetic. What I have done is made a transistorized amp with 5 band graphic and fitted it to a Dansette Major. Now this does make a huge difference in the quality department as they only have a single EL84 valve and need a high output cartridge in their original form. My Major sounds like no other...haha!!! (Must make a video of it) Thanks for commenting! :)

Would a Garrard AT6 deck fit into a Bush SRP31C, I have the Bush with a Garrard 210 which has a totally buggered idle wheel and want to swap the deck, thanks
@GarrardAT6
@GarrardAT6 6 лет назад
Hello Laurence. There are 3 versions of the AT6. The very first AT6 is a direct swap for the RC210. The next version of the AT6 has transit screws that remain in place rather than being completely removable, but has the early suspension springs of the RC210, which have screws showing on top of the turntable and mount right through the motor board. The last AT6 and all other Garrard Autoslim turntables have the non removable transit screws and 3 suspension springs in the same place, but the suspension springs sit on top of the motor board and have no screws showing on top of the turntable. In short, yes any AT6 will replace an RC210 in a Bush SP31C, but depending on which version of the AT6 you get, you may have to slightly modify the motor board underneath. I have just pulled out an RC210 and the 3 different versions of the AT6 to double check. I 'personally' think a Bush SRP31C looks much nicer with a white RC210 especially if the Garrard turntable mat is still in good shape. AT6's are excellent turntables and are easy to find in the colour scheme of the one in this video.(Which I've never been keen on) Harder to find are the metallic grey versions.The AT6 did come in pure white, but I've only seen them fitted to Dynatron Carnival GR8's of which I only have 2. They have fixed transit screws and the 3 early suspension springs that have the screws showing through the turntable. Easily seen in this video on my channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kLIy-_TSdLw.html Many Bush SRP31C's came standard with the Garrard AT5 in white. Smaller 8 inch turntable platter, same removable headshell as the AT6, but a less competent tonearm with no adjustable weights or counter balance. The AT5 mounts in the same way as the later version of the AT6. (Same as all the other models in the Autoslim range) If the RC210 is the one in the Bush SRP31C in the video on your channel...There appears to be nothing wrong with the idler wheel. If the automatic function slows or stops during operation the RC210 just needs a decent service and the idler wheel needs cleaning properly. This does not include rubbing with abrasive paper..Don't ever be tempted to do that. I wish you all the best with your SRP31C. Regards Jon.
@lmbush5053
@lmbush5053 6 лет назад
Hi, thanks for that, it was a Garrard 210 deck on the Bush SRP31C which has a bad idler wheel on it and impossible to replace. I have looked at the AT6 and the counterweight on the back of the tone arm looks like it swings out too much for the limited clearance of the sides of the case, bearing in mind that there is only about 1cm clearance of the deck around the motorboard in this record player, I think you know the technician, Andy in Stockport Manchester who does my radios and record players? he is wintage electronic repair (I think) on here, if you look for a Bush VHF41 you will see a Bush vhf41 radio he restored for me. anyway I do have an AT6 deck from a huge Dynatron radiogramme that I bought for £20 that Andy is interested in, he says he will see if he can get the AT6 deck to fit my Bush SRP31C but if the clearance is not wide enough for the tone arm he has a Garrard 1000 deck, similar to the 2025 but with a strange looking lumpy aluminium tone arm, that he says will fit. I travel alot so I am not in UK till next week and will hear from Andy if it was feasible, its such a shame as he did the SRP31C amp for me and this record player plays fantastic but the 210 deck is really bad.Thanks Laurence
@lmbush5053
@lmbush5053 6 лет назад
PS if you look at my channel you can see the SRP31C that Andy of Vintage Electronics Repair here has restored for me, its playing a Toccato fugue organ music LP which demonstrates the great Bass and Treble response, so obviously I would like this record player to be kept working with a decent autochange deck in it. laurence
@lmbush5053
@lmbush5053 6 лет назад
PPS, I am going to post a vid of how the mechanism really slows on my 210 deck, as soon as the autochange cycle has run the turntable runs at the right speed, Im wondering what to do about this deck now! To be honest Im so pissed off that this thing doesnt work properly but from what you say it does seem that it must be possible to really get this fixed properly. laurence
@lmbush5053
@lmbush5053 6 лет назад
PPPS: Just posted a small vid in my channel here of how this 210 deck seizes up, its playing at the correct speed on records but the auto cycle is complete seizing up, Im wondering if I should have this deck seen to by someone else but I dont know anyone really in manchester area and dont want to spend more money on this bloody thing.

what cartridge does that have?
@GarrardAT6
@GarrardAT6 8 лет назад
It has a BSR SC12M. Other cartridges that are well suited are BSR SX6M or Sonotone 9TA. Don't be tempted into a BSR SC11M they only have a 77mV output and are a little too soft.

@@GarrardAT6 I’ve got a gondolier with an sp25 Mark 2 deck and the original cartridge - is it easy to instal the BSR cartridge? Wasn’t sure if the connecting pins were the same or if anything needs to be modified or is it just a straight swap? Thanks a lot:)

I wonder why cd players never give so much fun as record players do? Back when I were little in the 1960's it was a big occasion when we got a new record (as they were quite expensive.) & we couldn't wait to get it home to play it! I still have most of the families records dating back to when my parents got married in 1960 & they are much treasured. None of us liked pop music so most of it is big band & swing also jazz which my dad liked & sound tracks from various film musicals. Take it easy.
